My partner and I contracted with Maher & Greenwald to design two areas of our property. One turned out beautifully and the other lacked success utterly. On the positive end, four elegant birches are surrounded by a landscape of low plantings and mulch that I feel will only grow more stately as time passes. On the negative end, the second set of plantings was explicitly desired to hide a large piece of electrical equipment which it didn't do from the outset. We were asked to let the plants "grow in." Over the course of the winter though, a number of these plantings were eaten bare by deer (as verified by two other landscaping professionals with whom we work) despite being assured that they were "deer proof." Greenwald declaimed these professionals non compos mentis and despite a 1 year contractual guarantee on all plantings declared that the plants showed signs of "winter damage" and that the greenery was not guaranteed against "a hard winter." We cut them back to the ground will now have to fence them yearly if we keep them at all as I doubt that we'll be seeing these plants "grow in." Ultimately our experience was overshadowed by Greenwald's attitude throughout the process. From complaining that our own family members would not help her and her team do heavy lifting when we were present to refusing to give any advice regarding the watering of new plantings to refusing to examine the damaged plants. We withheld partial payment for a time in order to leverage Greenwald to take action and make good on the obligations of our mutual contract but to no avail. We have since paid them their full fee in order to move on with our lives. Between both the process and product, I would love to give the company an "A-OK" but in the end I have to say "Meh. We hired Maher Greenwald to design and install landscaping in two small, discrete areas of our property. Area 1 -- to plant trees and surrounding shrubs that would help separate a guest cottage from the main house; and Area 2 -- to install plantings in order to obscure some large electrical equipment near the house. The larger first area turned out lovely, and succeeding in achieving the stated purpose; the second area was problematic from the beginning, and got worse over time. We had a lot of concerns about the second area from the beginning -- the plantings essentially did not block any of the large equipment. Maher Greenwald told us "the plants will grow in -- you have to be patient." After one year, many of the plantings were completely eaten by deer (as per two other landscapers), even though Maher Greenwald says it was "winter damage." Our agreement was that Maher Greenwald would replace any damaged plantings in the first 12 month period -- but they refused to replace anything because, they claim, winter damage was not included in the guarantee. (There was no such stipulation in the contract!) I tried several times to persuade Maher Greenwald to replace the plantings, but they refused. I will also add a word about Carrie Greenwald's style. She initially comes across as a grandmotherly-type, but turns out to be a full-on prima donna and a bully. Unlike other landscape designers, she will not give you a design concept in advance -- you have to trust her style. And when it works, it's lovely -- but when it doesn't work, you have to just accept it the outcome without ever questioning it. At various times, she told me: "I don't know about watering, figure it out with your irrigation guy!" or "a thank you would be nice" or "your father refused to help us even though he was just standing around". So, I would caution you in advance to expect this sort of behaviour. We would never use Maher Greenwald again. It was a deeply frustrating experience. I am giving them three stars despite this, because the larger area they landscaped on our property turned out quite beautiful. The second area, however, was an unmitigated disaster, made worse by Maher Greenwald's attitude. I caution anyone considering this company to think twice before hiring them. read more

We chose MaherFineGarden to help landscape a new lawn by putting up a retaining wall and fence. They subcontracted out the fence part. Sadly, the fence is the only good part. There was nothing FINE about the experience. The lawn the architect created is lumpy in parts, dips like a basin in the middle, and does not drain so is a soggy mess almost all the time. The architect then tried to put a drain in the middle which also did not work. It was a bath. He also did not do his proper diligence and get the right permits in advance or even tell us. On the Administration, he was slow to respond to emails and texts, the invoices were handwriitten in scribbles and included mistakes. Even after we told him not to incur any more time he just did his own thing. Then after paying him a small fortune (25K) we had to engage another contractor to try and fix the uneven, soggy lawn with rotting grass. After all that he tried to put a bogus lien on our house for his mistake time, time we told him not to incur. I would NOT recommend MaherFineGarden. The whole experience was a waste of time and money and frustrating, and worst of all, the outcome was a soggy messy lawn we could not use. read more

I manage a property which has had extensive renovations including landscaping. Maher & Greenwald were hired for landscape design, installation and care instruction. At the homeowners request, I met on site with Maher & Greenwald to review the watering requirements and install watering devices for the landscape project. Greenwald and an assistant were both resistant to providing any instruction, advise or assistance regarding the proper use of the watering devices that they approved. At the on site meeting, Greenwald in particular, became difficult as she was competing for my time with other contractors. She later complained to the homeowner that she was not being helped with the work (for which she was being paid very handsomely). Landscape development is an ongoing process. I had the distinct feeling Greenwald was ready to quickly move on. Their positive marketing messages, picture advertising and awards are not at all consistent with my personal experience with them. read more

We had a few designers view our sloping backyard property looking for a "vision" as my wife and I clearly could not imagine it ourselves. Only Maher/Greenwald had an idea which would make it functional using existing boulders, and creative regrading to fashion a finished product that looked natural- almost as it had always been there. Their crew was efficient and the work was completed in a timely manner. More plantings in the works for the spring. We had used them more for this type of garden design in our front yard in the past and enjoy it immensely. read more

Over the period of many years we have hired Maher and Greenwald for two or three areas of our garden and landscaping. On earlier projects we have really enjoyed the results. Their landscaping plan sets off our house handsomely, allowing for both formal and more whimsical styles. A new project is now under way. Maher and Greenwald had a vision and are in the process of transforming a rather unsightly area to one that will be much more welcoming. They are a creative team, extremely knowledgeable, honest, and overall, a pleasure to work with. read more
