dr. laurie has been our vet since we moved to the area in 2010, on the recommendation of a mutual friend, back when she was operating as a mobile vet. the brown dog, or Little Brown Dog as the vet staff knows him, loves dr. laurie. of course, this is coming from the dog version of grumpy cat, but it's worth keeping in mind that LBD was a rescue with some definite psychological baggage. dr. laurie and her staff have been great in dealing with his anxious/sulking/defiant personality, and are very quick and efficient in completing the less than enjoyable tasks. (seriously--we had some blood work done a few months ago to confirm a thyroid condition, and she was done before he even figured out what was going on!) since she has moved to the main street veterinary clinic, we've visited a few times for follow-ups, vaccinations, and recurrent skin infections. the clinic itself is bright and clean, the staff are friendly and helpful, and we've never had a problem getting an appointment quickly. the fees and medication charges also seem really reasonable, especially for the quality of care they provide. i can't recommend dr. laurie enough! we're sad to be relocating, because it will be difficult to find someone as caring, professional, and conscientious as she's been! read more

On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, I took my cat to the Main Street Veterinary Clinic because of my concern that he was having increasing difficulty eating and retaining food. Dr. Schindler examined him and concluded that the problem was likely his age (nearly 17 years old). She offered blood work to identify any problem(s). I stated that costly blood work would not be beneficial (given the cat's age) and because I did not want an intrusive intervention; I was solely interested in providing comfort, if possible. The doctor suggested Cerenia would calm the cat's stomach. I (mistakenly) agreed to purchase it. The doctor also informed me that the cat's next Rabies shot would be due in October and asked if I would like her to receive it during this visit. I first replied that I was not concerned about Rabies because my cat was declawed and was not allowed outside. She replied Rabies shots are required by law. I thought to myself that, since the cat has not had a visible reaction to prior Rabies shots in the past, he would be OK this time as well. He was given the vaccination, paid and left. Upon getting home, I looked inside the Cerenia box and found only four doses. This was unsatisfactory because the cat regurgitates his meals several times a week and, at approximately $9.00 per pill, I could not possibly afford this medicine. I called the Main Street Clinic and made arrangements to return the pills. I asked for a cheaper treatment and was told there was no effective alternative. I have since learned that another cheaper option for some pets is probiotics. Shortly after getting home, my cat started regurgitating repeatedly, vomiting all the solids in his intestinal tract, and then foaming. At first, the foam was white, then pink, then I realized it was bloody. Initially, I did not understand how sick he was, but as the day went on, the cat visibly declined. He would not eat his scheduled meal and he just lay in a heap. This continued into the evening. The next morning he declined further and I called the Main Street Clinic to report that I feared my cat was dying and thought the vaccination might have brought it on. The receptionist called Dr. Schindler. She agreed that was a possibility and advised me to bring the cat to the clinic to receive fluids to ease his passing, do blood work, and (if he continued to decline), euthanize him. I asked the doctor why she was suggesting blood work. I asked again what would be the benefit for the cat from blood work, but received no answer. That completed the conversation. Fortunately, my cat has not died. It has now been over a week since our visit to the clinic and he is himself again: alert, even playful at times, and loving. This experience with Main Street Veterinary Clinic was horrific. The visit made my cat much sicker (not better). Dr. Schindler did inform me of the possibility of an adverse reaction to the vaccination, but I thought naively that if my cat had not had a negative reaction over the past 17 years that was not an issue. I regret that the doctor did not suggest I wait for Licorice's scheduled vaccination in October. I do not understand why the doctor even brought the vaccination up and risked putting an old, sick cat in jeopardy. When I later spoke to her indirectly on the phone, through the receptionist, she said that the cat was close to dying and the vaccine had likely hastened his passing. I thought this callous. I did not bring Licorice to the Clinic to hasten a painful death. Nor do I understand why a licensed veterinarian would advise me to do blood work on a dying pet. Certainly, it would not prolong his life or make his passing more comfortable. I believe that Dr. Schindler acted unethically by suggesting that what appeared to be a dying cat get an early rabies vaccination (even though she thought it could make him sicker) and suggesting blood work (not only during the clinic visit but a second time when we both thought that death was imminent). Cats dying from old age need neither vaccinations nor blood work. read more

Took my puppy to them when I first got him, and they were expensive and I was fine with that, but after a few weeks he began to cough and sneeze. We scheduled an appointment to see what was wrong and they said he had a cold and to give him Children's Benadryl once daily until he got better. He never did got better, and we took him back two weeks later for more shots and they asked if he got any better, and we said no. They said to continue to give the Benadryl to him until he got better. A week later we had to take him to the 24 hour Virginia tech veterinarian clinic at 12 am to find out he had pneumonia and needed antibiotics. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone! They are overpriced and do not do their job. read more

Dr Wisgerhof & my vet tech thoroughly communicated with me about all of my concerns & kitty cat & I were in & out quicker than any other vet we've been too. Our family has switched after 40 years in Blacksburg. Main Street Veterinary Clinic is now our go to clinic for our household of critters. (And that's after sticking with our old one since 1980) The compassion and approach to treatment is exceptional from the front desk right through to the veterinarians. This is the only vet I've ever taken my cats to in the area, and they love it. Somehow, my cats actually enjoy going to the vet when they know they're coming to this location. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and everyone really seems to care about the health and well being of my cats. They do charge a little bit more than other vets, but I'm willing to pay the extra fee in order to ensure that my kitties are in trusted, capable hands. read more

I like the new owner of the clinic. They came in the summer of 2014. Dr. Laurie is very knowledgeable and professional. I am starting to take my dogs and cat there. This is an amazing veterinary clinic! We just took our puppy for his first vaccinations and checkup, the entire staff was so sweet and caring. The vet tech got on the floor to cuddle with our unsure baby and specifically waited for the vet to begin as to not upset him. The entire time they gave him lots of love, pets, and cookies to ensure that he was calm and happy. They took their time and made sure that all of our questions were answered, and I can't praise them enough! Seriously the best veterinary office we have been to, if you want your baby to be treated like royalty then this is the place for you. read more

I was initially impressed with this vet and their friendly, knowledgeable staff and didn't mind that they charge more than other local vets. My cat had been compulsively overgrooming for months without responding to steroids, which is why I had to keep bringing him back in after we moved here. But all they really did was prescribe more steroids. He went through 3 rounds of prednisone with no results. When I suggested behavioral meds like Prozac, I felt like I was getting quite a guilt trip for risks involved. I was so frustrated that he wasn't improving visit after visit that I broke down crying during one visit. I know it's not their job to soothe humans, but I was really upset and the staff didn't seem to care. So then I took my cat to Companion Animal, and right at the first visit, Dr. DeRosa said "Some cats don't respond to steroids. Let's look for alternatives." And my cat is doing so much better now, and I'm not sobbing in the vet's office. read more
