Customers meet at their conveniently located Bar Harbor shop, where final payment is made ($55/person during peak season). There, basic safety is explained before outfitting everyone with spray skirts, gloves, life jackets etc. My fiancé and I had limited experience with kayaking before the trip. Fletcher gave us the confidence to relax and enjoy the scenery. This company exclusively operates trips on the west side of Acadia. This is great - it is far more remote and boat traffic is very limited.

All too often, you'll get a kayak whose foot-pedals no longer work or vests that are faded or showing signs of wear and tear, but everything looked great. We had a wonderful time exploring the coves and inlets of coastal Maine knowing that our equipment was, well, ship-shape. Rich took our family on a full day tour of Bar Harbor/Acadia. The kids are ages 7 and 9 and he…read moreadjusted the content of the tour based on the likes and dislikes of my kids that I described to him over the phone prior to arriving. We started the morning on 1+ hour hike through a spruce forest to arrive at the edge of a cove. Seals were in the water and birds in the distance. We literally didn't see a single other person on the hike which is incredible given that it was high season (August). It was a testament to Rich's knowledge of the island. We did visit Sieur de Monts Spring and did a flat loop walk on the long boardwalk trail which was also fairly deserted given its proximity to the tour buses pouring tourists out in front of the nature museum there. Lastly, we made a visit to a tidal pool where we spent a solid 2 hours in the water looking under every rock for starfish, crabs, sea anemones, sea urchins and snails galore. Rich knew each species and explained the good and the bad (green crabs -- invasive, not good; Jonah crabs - native, good) Rich did all of the driving and it made for a relaxing exposure to Bar Harbor/Acadia that we would've never been able to do as quickly on our own. Well worth the money.

There were only a couple of cars when we arrived on a Thursday in September. The trail starts off in a mass of blueberry fields. Unfortunately for us, it was past blueberry picking season. As a note, you can only hand pick the blueberries, no rakes are allowed. The trail then enters the woods, and you are in the woods until you reach the water. The trail is gravel/natural mulch which makes for easy walking. There are some roots but it's not too bad. In several wet areas, they have built boardwalks. There are some strategically placed adirondack chairs at various viewpoints of the water. They were very comfortable - what a great idea! So, if you plan ahead, you can pack a lunch and dine by the water :) As you hike along, there is a spur trail that takes you to Lobster Point. When you return to the main trail, the loop trail to Birch Point is not far away. Once you leave Birch Point, continue around the loop. There is a pretty narrow part through some low bushes that is cleared just enough for you to walk through. Then you come upon a very open, rocky space that is on the water. Another place that would be fun to hang out and have lunch. Finish the loop trail and head back to the parking lot on the original main trail. This isn't a hike that will get your heartbeat up; however, it is an enjoyable walk with some great water views. It took us about 2 1/2 hours but we lollygagged around quite a bit. There were some bugs but they weren't too bad in September.

This place is the former estate of a female ornithologist. You can walk on a wood boardwalk…read morethrough the forest and there are additional dirt trails. Use bug spray though as there are a ton of biting insects here! When you park you will notice a number of cages. These cages are housing injured raptors. You can really get to see them up close although it is a little sad that they are stuck in cages. There is a visitor center though I was there too early in the morning so I cannot comment about it.

It is quiet and gentle and gorgeous. We walked the white trail -- the longest of 4 miles of intersecting walking trails through the picturesque and peaceful woods. Then we visited all the bird habitats with owls, hawks, ravens, vultures, and geese - all of which have been rescued and given a second chance in this lovely place. Be sure to take the time to read the placards about the birds and the venue to really appreciate what's going on here. Lovely!

Porta potties conveniently on the way to the lake. They have push trailers to get the boats down. The lake was beyond gorgeous. The price was set right $38 for 3 hours. This is the perfect activity to experience Maine. So where this company really shined was the staff going over and beyond for our family today. I had the tragic luck of dropping the rental car keys into the lake a mile out from the launch site. I could not see the keys in the dark water. I luckily had my phone on me and the attendant was quick to help. He said they have a rescue boat and they could come and help. The owner of the company and his employee Andy came in a motor boat to save the day. Andy offered to jump into the cold water and try to find my keys. It was too dark for him to see very far in front of him with the googles but I was beyond appreciative for his efforts. My panic set in as I was now stranded in the middle of nowhere with two kids and no idea what to do. They patiently waited for me to contact the rental company to figure out next steps. They offered to pull the canoe back to the front so we could figure out our rental situation. When we got back Andy pulled our canoe in, which usually you have to bring in your own boat. Again, over and beyond. Later, the tow company let us into our vehicle to get our personal items but I still had no way back. I downloaded Uber but I could not find a ride. I asked the tow driver if he could drive us and he said he wasn't going that way. The owner of National Park Canoe offered to drive us himself about 20 mins back to our motel and saved our day again. I could not appreciate these Angels more. Not only are you receiving a great experience at National Park Canoe; you are supporting a small business that has warm, kind, generous souls that deserve your business. I cannot thank these men enough for helping in any manner they could think of. Thank you thank you. If we ever come back to Maine we will certainly be back and I recommend this company whole heartedly.
