The shop is filthy, the freezers are often on the blink and the boxes of food are worryingly soggy. The staff are OK but to be honest I did not purchase anything in there (and I only popped in for some Yorkshire puddings anyway) because of the general state of the place. It's popular with students because of it's cheap frozen bangers (note the word bangers, the EU won't let them be called Sausages as they have such a low meat content!!) but to be honest it's not worth it, you can make your money stretch without dipping this low.

Alcotraz 2000 looks quite small from the outside but is surprisingly large once you enter. The shop is packed with a good range of food, drinks, newspapers and magazine, fresh and frozen products. Alcotraz 2000 is also an Off Licence, offering specials on large packs of large or beer. Alcotraz 2000 opens early in the morning to catch the newspaper trade and closes late, seven days a week. Christmas Eve last year at 6pm I realised I only had one squirt of washing up liquid left and knowing all the supermarkets were closed tried Alcotraz just by chance to still find them open and incredibly busy!

Visited Handsworth Sheffield, the lady on the self check outs was so rude, & spoiled my day. 3 times she said " I haven't got time to show you. Go to groceries, which I couldn't see. I felt embarrassed & patronised. I then told a Manager, & the the reply was, " she can be a bit abrupt sometimes" no apology. It is a fairly big Co Op and sells a wide variety of groceries together with wine and beer. The wine in particular is much cheaper than the off-licence across the road. There is also now a cash machine outside that doesn't charge you a fee to use it. There is a choice of baskets or trolleys for shopping which are always tidily cleared away. It has the advantage of being right by several bus stops so you don't need to walk far with shopping. One disadvantage is that it does not have a car park and parking spaces nearby are few and far between.

I'd recommend you try Asda's fresh fish - their trout stuffed with spinach and gruyere is gorgeous (30 mins in a moderate oven). Back to access - the small roundabout and the road up to Sandal can cause more congestion but Wakefield Council recently turned down Asda's request to alter the road layout so thwy're not to blame.
