Read on. It's NOT flat! Google Maps shows a nice paved trail that goes back and forth. Not straight...because it goes up in elevation. How high?...I think I read about 500 feet. That's equivalent to a 35-40 story building. Paved trail is probably for the paramedics that need to rescue old chubby guys like myself (I didn't need to be rescued). Some will say it's an easy hike. I beg to differ. My wife will run a 10k in the same time I run/walk a 5k. Going up the thighs will burn and you'll sweat and maybe swear). On the way down your 60 year old hips, knees and ankles will be in pain with every step. Not sure why I agreed to do another hike after doing Diamond Head 2 days previous to this one. I'm definitely going to have to go back to Leonard's Bakery after this. Yes there are some that will push a stroller up. It is not super doable for everyone. It is Not flat! Ocean views, paved trail, good amt of parking. This is a very doable hike for most- a little more than a 2mile round trip according to my fitbit, all paved if u stay on the trail. You feel the slight incline going up, but its a way easier walk than Diamond Head. Parking along the road is available if the lot is full. At 4pm, parking was still full, even tho this place closes at 5:45pm (?). Take water and sun protection, it can be hot, sunny and windy. Didnt notice any water or restrooms. If you are looking for an easy-ish hike that's suitable for many ages and abilities, this is a nice one. The whole path is paved, so you can take strollers on it if needed. The path up is pretty inclined, so you do feel like you're getting a workout, but since it's paved, it's not difficult per se. There are beautiful views of the water below and of the lighthouse (which you can't go into/near). It's a fairly quick up and down and you really can't get lost on this hike. During the right part of the year, you can even see whales below. Bring your binoculars during whale watching season and see if you can catch a glimpse. Upon arriving, there's plenty of parking and the trail is I would say moderately assessed by myself that I would say most people can do it. It is paved, so you're not having to worry about stepping on rocks or watching out for where you step. There's a lot of lookout points for you. Could take some really nice pictures. You'd have to have pretty good endurance to do it. It's about 2 1/2 miles round-trip I believe and it's pretty good for cardio not difficult, but it is a good hike. There's a lot of signs to tell you not to go off the trail but yet you see a lot of people doing it even though there are sheer cliffs that could probably make people no longer here. Parking is free but somewhat tight and limited. You just have to get to the open space as someone is leaving. Otherwise, parking along the main road just means a little further walk in which isn't bad. The hike is on solid paved road with a slight incline in the early parts of the trail. You can finish it in roughly 1-1.5 hours round trip without counting stoppage for photos for the ocean coast scenes. The lighthouse can't be accessed anymore but you can still see it below from the top vista point. The ocean views are excellent. There's a bathroom at the start of the trail in case you need to make-a pu. My wife allegedly grumbled as we climbed the paved road, saying "I don't like to exercise on vacation". Yet, if Cartier had treadmills, she'd go. But, yeah, it's about 2 miles round trip (60-75 minutes round trip), and consistently uphill, with a 500 foot gain. By the way, the Makapuʻu Point Light, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, has the largest lens of any lighthouse in the United States. Also, at 420 feet, it is the third highest, after Cape Menodindo (422) and Old Point Loma (462). This point is the southeasternmost tip of the island, part of a 30 minute loop that starts at Leonard's Malasada Truck, to Spitting Caves (6 min drive) to Lanai Lookout (8 min drive) to this trail (8 min drive) to Halona Blowhole (8 min drive). read more

Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail is a trail on the southeastern side of Oahu along the Kalanianaʻole Highway. There's a parking lot at the trailhead and on the short road to get there. The trail itself is fully-paved and is about 2 miles round trip to the lighthouse and back. It takes about an hour to complete but could take longer depending on your pace and due to the different viewing stops along the route. Although relatively short there is no shade along the hike. The summit of the trail has panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the coast, and Koko Crater. The Makapuʻu Lighthouse was built in 1909 and is active although inaccessible from the hike. From December to May this is a prime viewing spot for humpback whales. The paved trail and small elevation gain make this feel less like a hike and more like a stroll. The Views From The Top of Makapu'u are Beautiful! Such an amazing hike with a makai views most of the way shared with mauka views the rest as you hit switchbacks on your way up and back. Park or rideshare to the base and bring water. Some wear exercise footwear, some feel comfortable making the 2 mile round trip trek in slippers since it is paved and well kept. Pet and keiki friendly, easy to take strollers to the top. There is one area I recall that has steps only access. On a clear day, Molokai is easy to view along with the light house and nearby Sea Life Park. The Google says this is 500 ft incline so it is not flat and does take a bit of effort, as they estimate for anyone not typically in hike mode to plan about 1 hour 30 minutes. Sunscreen and a hat or visor are a good idea as well! (And take !) read more

Fantastic paved trail on the east side of the island. Parking always a challenge; note, I have witnessed terrible parking attempts with bumping on multiple occasions, so don't bring your fancy car here. Came 3 times in January with visiting friends, specifically to watch for whales. Was rewarded with epic views of multiple whales breaching and spouting just off the coast. It's a gorgeous hike on a paved road! Definitely go early because the parking gets pretty packed after 10am. We took our little dog there and I made such a mistake of not bringing him water on the trail and left it in the car! He was so exhausted and I had to carry him half the time. It was pretty hot without any shade so it was a tough walk for him. The view is absolutely gorgeous here and although it may seem easy, make sure you keep your loved ones close. Keep an eye out on any older folks you're with because there's been a time when a man had cardiac arrest while he was walking and sadly passed. Also, we saw a man with a baby in a stroller almost like a newborn baby and the baby was crying so much because it was so hot! Probably not a good idea to bring your small dogs and babies. It gets super hot if you go past around 9am. On our walk, we even saw some whales from afar! Awesome views and it's free so bring your water, sunscreen and camera! read more

Walked the trail last year and took it further and explored the tide pools this year! The trail is very family friendly as I took my family last year and the paved road made it safe and easy to walk up. The tide pools were a little more work to get to, so wear shoes with grip and watch your step! This trail with the pools takes some time out of the day and it was nice to chill in the cool water for a bit. There are sea urchins so water shoes would be helpful. This was a good hike for my level. It's on a paved path, is long enough, and there are several resting spots to stop and take a breath when needed. I think it's a 2-2.5 miles round trip hike. The views on the way and at the top are beautiful! The walk up is pretty steep and I definitely needed those resting spots as well as lots of water! There were many different levels of hikers, including young and older, and families with kids in strollers. I did the hike in Reef flip flops (silly me!), which was fine, but good walking shoes would have been so much better. At the top is the viewing area which looks out towards Molokai and where you can see the lighthouse. Beautiful views of Hawaii's deep blue seas. The path and viewing area is clean and kept up nicely. I didn't notice any bathrooms. The paved parking lot has some parking spots. It was full when we arrived, so we parked along the busy street. This is a good hike that won't get you dusty and dirty (because of being paved). But, you will get sweaty and thirsty. So be sure to take water and wear comfortable shoes. read more

My 4 and 5 year old keiki have been getting into hiking. So, on a day when we didn't have much planning time, we decided to head to the Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail. We figured the kids would love it with all the beautiful ocean views, and of course, the Lighthouse! I guess our kids are more into the hikes where you actually go into the mountains and follow those trail. They still had fun, but they kept asking to go to the mountains. Lol My husband and I had fun though, trying to see if we could see any humpback whales or dolphins! Parking can be a bit of a chore, and if you're not lucky, you could be hiking to the hike. So go super early or later in the afternoon. It's a quick hike, but it's hot, so don't forget water. And, you don't really need the usual hiking gear, it s a completely paved walkway, just a bit steeper than you'd expect. You could even push a stroller up ther if you want to. read more

There are gradual inclines on this trail so I would consider this an easy to moderate hike depending on your level of physical stamina . If you're looking to see a glimpse of Oahu, go on a hike at Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail. It's a walk and a hike as the road is paved with an incline as you go up. The hike could take anywhere between 45 minutes to one hour. You can take your time to enjoy some of the best view of the windward side of the island and maybe get a chance to see the whales. I was told you can spot the whales between the month of December to May. Or you can go faster and burn some excess weight;) This walk/hike is perfect for all ages and for hikers of all levels. I recommend that you bring a bottle of water to keep you hydrated. Make sure to apply sunscreen. If you wear a hat, make sure to keep it tight or wrapped with your hair to prevent it from flying. This is an easy hike for everyone. It's completely paved and about 2.5 round trip. The first 1-1.5 miles is walking uphill. I'm a wimp, I bitched and complained the whole time! It was embarrassing to see Titas wearing flip flops treading effortlessly up that hill! Regardless, I made it and I'm glad I did because those views at the top are worth every drop of sweat! You can see Molokai and the lighthouse. There are side dirt trails that will lead you down to some pools but we weren't dressed to swim. We came in May and we did come across some showers. A very manageable hike -- we saw everyone from elderly walkers and families with young kids to tourists in flip-flops, and everyone seemed to do just fine. This is one of those minimal effort, high reward hikes -- the views at the top are absolutely stunning and totally worth it. The trail is paved the whole way and not too steep, so it's great for beginners or anyone looking for a scenic walk rather than a workout. One tip: getting an Uber back to Waikiki can be tricky. We had to wait a bit since signal (Verizon) was only about one bar at the parking lot -- had to move around to get enough service to request a ride. Easy hike with paved path throughout the trail. It doesn't really feel like a hike but a leisure walk uphill. Go early as possible to avoid the heat as there is no shade. We arrived around 9 in the morning and it was starting to heat up. Luckily as we gradually went up the trail, it got windy so we had a nice breeze to cool us. There are several lookout spots on the way for people to catch their breath and take photos of the shoreline and ocean. In the winter months I believe people even visit for whale watching. It took about 20 minutes for us to reach the peak. At the top of the trail, there is a beautiful view of the ocean and lighthouse of course. So I've visited Diamond Head, Koko Stairs, and Makapu'u, and Makapu'u was definitely my favorite of the three. Most importantly, I recommend you go either near sunrise or 6-7 (but keep in mind the park technically closes at 7:45), because otherwise I can see how it gets unbearably hot. When we went in the early evening, there was a super pleasant breeze and shade and we thoroughly enjoyed the glorious views without feeling like we were melting in our skin. The path is all paved, so no hiking shoes necessary, and a gradual incline and then descent back to the parking lot, which makes this a great option for families. If you're in relatively decent physical shape, Makapu'u is totally manageable - after Koko in particular, I thought it to be a cakewalk. Plus, unlike Koko, some nice stopping points along the way to catch your breath and take in the view. The area is well-maintained but please respect the no graffiti/tagging signs - I was disheartened to see graffiti covering the small signpost for the oil house. There's free parking right at the start of the trail. We had no problems finding a spot when we came on the later side. No bathrooms so take care of business beforehand. And don't leave any valuables in your car. read more

We went around 10am and the parking lot at the bottom was getting packed. Took us about 55 minutes up to the top with several stops for water breaks and photo opportunities and about 25 minutes down. This is my favorite easy trail on the east side! Nice and paved (ooh that east side money lol), uphill incline. Breezy and cooler especially during my favorite sunset walks. Probably been here the most often out of all the trails on Oahu. Usually takes about 40 minutes round trip when we are walking. Plenty of stops to read about the trail and to sit if you need breaks. Weekends are probably the most poppin' time and usually parking spots run out so you will have to park on the side of the road occasionally. Very popular and family friendly walk. I've even seen some parents running up and down the hill with their stroller (I could never, but kudos to those fit parents!) Please don't leave valuables, especially here. Hey Yelpers! I am on my athletic journey! A review of Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail. This is a much calmer hike compared to Koko Head (see my previous reviews!) I went around 1PM on a weekday and parking wasn't too bad, I noticed a good amount of spots open. Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail is more of an elevated walk. All paved and with beautiful views of the ocean around (pictured below.) I would say this hike is great for beginner hikers, families, and children. I even saw a lady hiking in heels! Needless to say, very laid back. This is a great place to add to your list of sight seeing! If you get lucky you may see some whales! read more
