O.M.G. Do NOT even walk in the door. It's unfortunate that Yelp doesn't have the option to rate zero stars. It's also unfortunate that the doctors who work here - who I didn't even have the opportunity to meet, and who I'm sure are great at what they do - are represented first and foremost by the office staff I encountered. I've never been in a doctor's office that was so ... Unhappy. It was obvious to me from my phone conversation with Jennifer, to my interaction with Jordan at the front desk, that this office is not interested in attracting new patients to their office. I don't know how they keep the ones they have. I asked them to cancel my appointment and walked out before I even had a chance to meet the doctor. All the while biting my tongue and pasting a smile on my face. It had nothing to do with the logistics of initial billing or the appointment - but it had EVERYTHING to do with the attitude (edging the borderline of outright rudeness) of every person I talked to in that office. I got off the phone and later walked out of their office with the impression that: 1. the office staff hate their jobs 2. they need more coffee or sleep or both, 3. and they would like nothing LESS than to speak to patients. Office jobs aren't always a party, billing is never fun, but there's no need to make a customer feel like an inconvenience just for walking through the door! I don't think they understand that THEY are the first impression a new patient receives of the doctor they work with. THEY are a representation of the treatment, care, and professionalism - or lack thereof - of their doctor(s). I immediately got on the phone after walking out of that depressing building and made an appointment with another provider who I was referred to by one of their patients... A provider who unfortunately is out of my PPO network. But I'd rather pay more for quality care and positive service at an office where I know they WANT my business (and return visits), than to save money and endure being treated like an inconvenience. I was really disappointed with my experience here. The doctor and her assistant were excellent and Id go back just for them BUT the front desk was horrible. They act like you're wasting their time with questions or concerns. I called today to schedule an appointment for color contacts and was told by the office manager that this exam was included in my last visit there. When she told me this I did not have my schedule and said Id call back. So today I did and the lady on the phone argued with me and said that I was incorrect and Id have to pay $50 for the exam even though my last exam was less than 6 months ago and was previously told by a manger that this appt would be covered. All in all this place has the worst customer service! Offices should really understand the high importance to have quality people up front. They will either make or break your practice. Because guess where I'm going now? To a different eye doctor that I can buy some colored contacts from. Best of luck. read more

I have called in attempting to simply reorder more contacts on several occasions. They would constantly place me on such a long hold that I get aggravated & hang up. Its never like this at my other optometrist. I guess i just need to find a good local place and take my business elsewhere. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Lane's at Makar Eyecare for the past five years. Dr. Lane has been an excellent optometrist, but the customer service of the office staff has gone down hill dramatically in the past year and a half or so. I used to really like the two women at the front desk who worked together at their previous location. They were both always so welcoming, friendly, knowledgable and helpful. They seemed like they truly cared about the patients. It was always a pleasure interacting with them. It doesn't surprise me to see other negative reviews of Makar Eyecare's current front desk staff. The last few times I've been in the office, the front desk seemed quite disorganized and chaotic and the staff were very unfriendly. I've also had difficulty getting a hold of anyone when I've called the office to make appointments and order contacts. The times I've had to leave messages, no one has ever returned my calls which has been very frustrating. It seems as though the office has grown too much, adding more doctors, but not getting quality office staff to support them. My last visit to Makar Eyecare was my worst experience. I asked Brittany (her nametag said Brittany Front Desk Manager) a question and she talked to me like I was bothering or inconveniencing her. It was quite shocking to me that someone in a position of customer service would be so rude to a paying customer. You'd think as a business owner you'd want your front desk staff to have basic customer service skills if not excellent customer service skills and to treat your patients with respect and compassion so they'd enjoy their experience and want to return. Although I've really loved having Dr. Lane as my optometrist, I don't want to deal with the horrible customer service from Makar Eyecare's office staff, specifically their front desk staff, so I won't be returning. read more

Let's start by saying I don't normally write reviews (good or bad) but I felt that I needed to voice my experience with this office. First the front desk staff were very unfriendly and not helpful. Any time I had questions I was treated poorly and given answers with an attitude. But that is no new news as I see the front desk staff has historically been an issue. Brittany (says she's front desk manager) is probably the worst offender. When simply asking about why she needed my medical insurance, I was given the answer (which I understood) in a condescending tone and a lot attitude. She is supposed to be the example of costumer service to her staff but clearly she shows them that it's okay to be disrespectful to anyone with a question. After being treated like this I thought 'hey maybe it's just me she blew up on' didn't seem fair to judge just by that. However not 10min later I overheard her on he phone with another customer arguing with them because (what I could gather) they didn't have their ins info to give over the phone right then. Now I work in medical and I know how important it is to have that ins info, but to tell the customer in such a degrading manner is unacceptable. I can't help but think the owners know of her terrible customer service but either A) don't care enough to do anything. Or B) are afraid to confront her about these issues. I want to believe Brittany is not all bad. But her position there is not a good fit as she is one of the worst I've ever experienced in customer service. Until this issue is fixed I unfortunately will not be back. Dr Rivera was awesome and the technician Chris was very helpful. But the experience always begins with front desk and I don't wish to be disrespected any more. read more

Really enjoyed my visit and the staff after I got past the front desk. I wouldn't say they're intentionally rude, there is just an obvious lack of training on customer service skills so I'd say "rough around the edges" is more accurate. Prices are also very reasonable. read more

I hate to give a 2-star review, because this place has many redeeming qualities, including a pleasant and beautiful office, but the negative aspects weigh too heavily. I'll begin by saying that Dr. Rivera was exceptional and that I enjoyed my appointments with her in the two years I went to Makar. Additionally, the technicians who did all my pre-screening jazz prior to seeing the Dr. were also exceptional. I felt that my clinical care was above and beyond, and I fully enjoyed these aspects of my appointment. However, the service side of this office leaves much to be desired. Nobody was particularly rude or anything, but I'm guessing the behind-the-scenes workings of this office are askew. Two years I went there, and two years I received the wrong glasses order. I think the opticians? are friendly and helpful, but getting it wrong two out of two times is really bad (once the wrong color frame was ordered, the second, the anti-glare lens coating was not applied). So, both times, I had to wait a few additional weeks for my glasses, and they cannot do "rush" orders. Lastly, it has become difficult to schedule appointments. I called once to schedule a month or so in advance, and I was told that I couldn't schedule that far ahead, but when I did call a couple weeks later, they did not have any times available for me. I work part time and shouldn't have to take a day off or wait months for an appointment while being told I can't schedule 6 weeks in advance. Isn't that what pre-planning is for? My dental office schedules 6-12 months in advance! Something should be done about the service, because I hated to leave Dr. Rivera. She, and I'm sure her colleagues, are suffering due to poor front-office management. read more

I was visiting Anchorage with a school trip and Makar fit me in for a visit last minute. Right before I left for the trip I was diagnosed with ophthalmic shingles or shingles in the eye. Very painful and potentially can cause vision loss or long term vision problems. Dr. Rivera was so nice and went above and beyond to help me while I was there. She even gave up her lunch hour the next day to get me in to check on my progress. She also helped me after hours calling around Anchorage to several pharmacies to find the eye drops that I needed. When I left Anchorage she found an optometrist close to me and made an appointment for me to have them check to see how the treatment was going. This is now the only place in Anchorage that I will recommend for eye care. read more

My visit was difficult and frustrating. I want to say the staff are all very friendly, but I definitely got the impression that the front desk personnel were ALL new and had no idea what was going on. My son and I both had appointments, they could not schedule us concurrently, so he was first then me (that meant a minimum of 1.5 to 2 hours in the office). We checked in and because we had transferred from another doctor that had retired I assumed they had all of our insurance information, they did not have the medical. I offered to go home and get my card as it was an hour until my appointment, but was told that I didn't need the card for the visit, but I should get the information to them when I could. The doctors were friendly, the technicians also. The tech assisting my son with his new contacts was VERY patient, and that was appreciated. I felt that the office was too busy, and was left to wonder around looking for my son. We were told by both the tech and the doctor that my son should schedule an appointment for one week so that they could check fit, etc. on the new contacts. When we checked out the girl at the desk had to run my card three times and the topper was that my doctor ordered an extra test, that I needed my medical insurance for, which I didn't have (because they told me that I didn't need it for this visit) so they wanted me to pay $238 in cash, that was upsetting, since it was never explained at the time of the test that it was not included in my annual exam fee and would be an additional cost, that was FRUSTRATING. Well after being in the office for three hours (yes three) I signed a promissory note, paid an extra $45 and was requested to provide my medical insurance as soon as I could so they could bill insurance. I went home, got the info and called to see where I could send it, got an incorrect e-mail address, called back, got another e-mail address sent the info. Then I remembered that they wanted my son to come back in a week (the front desk did not ask to schedule the appointment when we checked out). I called to make the appointment and was told it would be a minimum of two weeks before they could get him in, as I was told by both the Dr. and the tech he should come back in a week, I was frustrated by this and the girl on the phone said she was new and put me on hold, several minutes later some other front desk person (not the tech, not the doctor) got on the phone and said that it didn't have to be a week and the appointment they were trying to schedule would be fine!!!! I am sorry, but if this is true I would like to hear it from medical professional, not the front desk. At this point, frustration got the better of me and I said I would make an appointment at another eye care professional and would like his new contact prescription info. I then called them back and (thorough the automated system) left a message for the tech to call back, that was late yesterday afternoon, no call back yet 11 am the next day. An hour ago I called and left a message for the Doctor to call -- we will see how log that takes. read more

Absolutely some of the best, most pro-active Optometrists I have ever visited... very knowledgeable, helpful, and holistically-oriented. I highly recommend Dr. Becky Makar and Dr. Lane, specifically. Would have rated 5 stars, except for all the troubles I encountered with some surly office staff who prioritize their own issues over patient service. Five Stars!! From the minute I walked in and was greeted by the friendly receptionist, I felt welcomed and appreciated! The tech was awesome and Dr Salvo was amazing! They have a huge selection of fabulous glasses! The staff in the optical department were all great and helped me pick out a beautiful pair that I wouldn't have chosen on my own-they helped me come out of my little box! The office is professional and comfortable. The optometry tech and Dr Salvo were both thorough, but efficient. I spent a lot of time looking at various frames after my appointment. The lady who assisted me was able to help me find an alternate color online in the frame I liked. She also very thoroughly explained my insurance benefits for frames/lenses. Excellent service. I have mixed feelings about this office. It used to be fine, but now that they've moved the front desk staff has changed. My last appointment went well despite the large amount of attitude from the front desk staff. My recent interaction with the from desk staff was when I asked to be removed from their mail/texting/Cold calling list. They send out an excessive amount of texts, newsletters and calls when they want you to schedule an appointment. One is sufficient, and the automated texting to my personal phone is inappropriate. I don't like being pushed into scheduling. I will do so when I'm ready. Regardless I was met with a really bad attitude when politely asking that they remove me from their mailing and call lists. I'll be switching offices. I'm over the poor attitude and from the looks of these reviews I'm not the only one. read more

I've been a long time patient of Dr. Makar and have had great service. I was a patient of her father before that. When I tried to make an appointment for a routine eye exam I was told they wouldn't set up the appointment unless I gave them my insurance information over the phone in advance. I offered to bring the insurance information with me to the appointment or to pay cash but was told that was unacceptable. The fact that I had been a patient for such a long time and never had a payment problem apparently didn't matter. read more

My first visit to this place was today. The front door isn't marked, so that was a little annoying. But once you get in the building it's easy to find your way around. The office was very nice. The front desk was extremely unfriendly. On the phone when I made my appt and in person. I did hear them being nice to other people while I was in the office. So I'm not sure what makes them pick who they are friendly to and unfriendly to. The first lady I went back with, Taryn, was extremely friendly. She was helpful and answered any questions I had. The doctor I saw, Eliza Salvo, was wonderful. She was quick and professional and answered all the questions I had and the ones that I didn't even think of. The lady that helped me with my frames was also very friendly and helpful! They had a large selection of frames and they even had discount ones, which was great for me because my insurance doesn't cover frames. Over all I was satisfied with the place. I've been going to Makar Eyecare for well over a decade and have had nothing but a great experience with everyone at the office. Dr. Becky is very careful and thorough as is the rest of the staff. I've had several pairs of glasses over the years purchased at their shop and the service has been great. I had one set of name brand frames that have broken (I think it is a design flaw) and they have replaced them quickly both times with no cost. Great customer service. I highly recommend them, and have recommended them to others and they have thanked me for the recommendation. read more

Very poor customer service! I went here to get a well vision exam and new glasses as mines had broken. I specifically told the receptionist what I was there for that day. I was rushed through the entire process. During check-out I was told that I would have to pay for an eye glasses exam copay as well as a contacts evaluation which would be $50.00 extra. I tried to explain that I never asked for a contacts evaluation, was not aware that they preformed that along with my regular exam and would like just to pay for my regular copay and order new glasses. The receptionist then began to argue with me along with another receptionist. They spoke to me in a very rude condescending manner. I left that day only paying for my glasses copay but could not believe how horribly rude these receptionists were. I work in customer service with daily heavy customer contact. I've had customers yell, curse, cry, etc so I could understand if i was being irate but i was not. I was completely calm and never raised my voice so I cannot understand why I was treated so rudely. I will not pay for services I did not ask for or need and left that day only paying my glasses co-pay. I will not recommend this place to any of my customers. I am not sure if they are just greedy for money here or if it was a communication error on there part but I will never step foot in this place again. read more

They had the best selection of glasses after searching around town! After looking almost everywhere else in town and not seeing what I wanted I was about ready to give up. I got on Oakleys website and found Makar's listed as a dealer. They had by far the largest selection of oakleys I've seen along with lots of other stylish choices your grandpa wont be matching you in. The opticians (Christie and the only guy who worked there, his name I didn't catch)were very helpful and worked together in helping me figure out what option was best for me and what my insurance covered. I did not get an eye exam here and I did not deal with the front desk staff at all that other people have written complaints about. But if you are looking for awesome glasses selection, you know to wear on your face, and service this place does offer that in their glasses department for sure! read more

I was told about this business from a co-worker that said they were gentle with her autistic son. Ive had bad experiences with some eye doctors that were more interested in milking your insurance benefits rather than your personal care. So after I had an eye emergency back in June, I tried them out. Their prices were reasonable, and they got to the root of the problem. I went back for my eye exam in August, and saw Dr. Rivera, who was kind and informative. They do a thorough eye exam here, not only checking for glaucoma, but color blindness and macular degeneration as well. The staff that works in their optical department was very helpful in not only figuring out what my insurance benefits would cover, but also what glasses would be right fory face. The optical is amazing and all the opticians are so knowledgeable. They gave me glasses that had an amazing blue blocking feature that has helped me on the computer and with my migraines. I recently called to renew my prescription and I had to leave a message. Two days later I had to call back as no one returned my call. I finally spoke to a front desk person who was helpful as much as she could be. She listened to my concern and kindly explained that she would need to take my name and number and have a technician call me back. A day later, now day three without a return call, I called my old doctor to have them fill my prescription as I was running out. I tired Makar because I heard that they had great technicians who were helpful and friendly but the fact I never received a call back to have my prescription filled tells me that this is false. If you are looking for an attentive business this is not it. Avoid going here until they technicians who care about their customers. read more

Use caution when ordering contacts! Ordered contacts a few weeks ago, went to pick them up to find out that they ordered my contacts in an old prescription. Given that this is not the first time that they've tried to use my old prescription (ordered contacts through COSTCO last time since they had a sale and Makar sent over my old prescription) I asked for them to just delete that old prescription because I didn't want that issue anymore. They couldn't, I understand it's part of medical history. So I had to reorder the contacts in my current prescription and wait 5 more business days for them. This time I asked for them to be shipped to my house, verified my address and all. Today I received a text saying my contacts had arrived and were ready to be picked up. I called to verify that they did not ship to my house, and were in fact at their office before I drove across town again. Went to pick up my contacts, and this time they only had a 3 month supply (I ordered 6 months) for me, and I have to reorder them again. Keep in mind that they did not notice that they only tried to give me half of what I paid for, I had to bring it up to them. Makes me wonder how many unsuspecting customers walked away with less than what they paid for. So now I have the rest of my contacts being ordered and shipped to my house. Jury is still out if they'll actually make it to my house, or if I'll receive another text next week saying to come pick up my contacts at the store. So, if you're ordering contacts please triple verify that you received not only the correct prescription, but also the correct amount! Hope you have better luck than I did. read more
