I came to Anchorage in 1979. I went to Alaska Eye Care Center when they first opened. Back then they were the chic place to go, now, all the original founding doctors are gone, replaced by money hungry grubbers. Gone are the carpeted floors and quiet, spacious exam rooms where the doctors took time to LISTEN to you took the time to answer questions and just plain worked with you. The assistants were all polite and all the assistant pre-doc exam rooms were dark, quiet and private. Now it's a Walmart conveyor belt shakedown business. A bunch of women who, being foreigners, tell you what to do, and when you attempt to explain something, they look at you with glazed eyes, giggle, and ignore you to get the pre-exam done as quickly as possible. The doctors' exam room are small, harsh cubicles with no warmth at all, the doctor who dealt with me machine-gunning questions getting the exam done in as short time as he could, his schedule marked out in 30-minute blocks. The sales associates want to rush you through to buy something, and when you think about making a decision they huff openly being impatient. The one assigned to me was openly rude. I got my prescription and left. Sadly, Alaska Eyecare Centers have fallen far indeed since Dr. Diane Thanephon and they others where there. Sad. read more

I have been going to Alaska Eye Care Center for over 35 years. I have never considered switching providers or had an unhappy experience with the practice. I trust Dr. Nolan with my eye care. On 6/15/2022, I went to Alaska Eye Care Center for a new prescription for my old Oakley frames from 2019, and a NEW set of Oakley frames with the new script. From the time I entered the establishment, my EyeCare needs were taken care of respectfully, and professionally. Dr. Giesey conducted a thorough eye exam, and even managed to talk sports with me. I feel his pain on being a long suffering Detroit Lions fan, but at the same time, he can say the same thing about me being a long suffering Pittsburgh Pirates fanatic........touché, doc. A very nice EyeCare specialist, Stephanie, helped me out a great deal in choosing my new Oakley frames, as well as adding the bells and whistles that I wanted for it, and my other lenses. I have to tell you, Stephanie has a really good eye when it comes to fitting frames to different head sizes, and facial structures. She really knows her stuff. After all was said and done, Stephanie told me that my new frames will be ready in 2 weeks, instead, they came back the FOLLOWING week.........that was quick! I liked how they fit, but after a week, I had to go back and have them darken the transition part of the lens.........I wanted them extra dark. I waited maybe another week (a week and a half tops) and my new frames arrived yesterday. My old frames with the new lenses arrived the week prior. I want to thank everybody who helped me out during my various visits to Alaska Eye Care. From start to finish I have nothing but the highest respect for those who helped me out. I can easily see myself scheduling another eye exam, and purchasing another set of Oakley frames. Hopefully, they'll have the ones that I've got my eyes on. Thanks y'all!!! read more

My initial visit was great in May. I needed new glasses and I heard my insurance was great here. The doctor I saw was super friendly (can't remember her name) got my prescription and then headed to find some frames. I found some I like and the lady was pretty helpful finding frames that fit my face and I liked. Walked away paying $180ish for exam, prescription and new frames. I ended up using my insurance cash card and they actually gave me a refund when I learned I could use that card to pay. The problem for me is a few months later like 3 there is a pretty decent sized line like a crack coming from the top of the frame in the glass. It's definitely not a scratch and I see there's a second one forming and creeping down. Not to mention the Kate spade frames had a screw that's popped out on one side. Trying to fix it is impossible since the three holes don't even line up for the screw to go in. So here I am 9 months later I need new glasses again. I wish I knew where my prescription is but I'll have to get a new one somewhere else. read more

The staff was professional and polite. They have a very wide selection of Ray Bans and other high end manufacturers. Thank-fully the wait time is not too bad and the place is very modern. The location has easy parking off ninth and convenient to get to. If you are in a time crunch and don't want to get run over in Anchorage traffic, this is the place to go. They have a database called Marlo where you can double check your insurance and billing. Their contacts also have a rebate program. This is a wonderful place for eye care. read more

I recently had cataract surgery and called the Anchorage office about getting new eyeglasses since they accept Medicare assignment. I was told all I needed to do was bring my Medicare card, ID and eyeglass prescription and that no appointment was needed. When I arrived, I gave the receptionist my info and was told to wait for the next available person. When it's finally my turn I tell the person I'm there for eyeglasses through Medicare. I was then told I had to first see their doctor, that they didn't accept prescriptions for Medicare from other doctors. To say the least I was upset but kept my cool and just left. I gave this place two stars only because I know, at this point in my life I should know better than to let a doctor talk me into something that I don't want. My bad. I had originally asked for the prescription that I currently use and the optometrist railed about how I needed something stronger. I told him that I am prone to headaches but he continued, so I relented and followed his advice. The glasses were expensive and now I can't use them. The office refused to take out the lenses and put in the prescription I had originally asked for unless I went through an entirely new appointment with the doctor. This place is a scam. I needed an extension on my way overpriced eye exam because my glasses were broken, I called the office and the receptionist that answered said "OF COURSE the DOCTOR is not IN THE OFFICE ON THE WEEKENDS" (how dare me!!!) Then she said "MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO TO LENSCRAFTERS" great!!! they are not even up to the standards of LENSCRAFTERS, listen, this place has been unaccommodating and will not fax my prescription to other eyeglass stores, I paid for that prescription and they act like it's theirs, they are definitely overpricing and overcharging our insurance, they are greedy and will only write your prescription only for a year so you have to keep coming back so they over bill and bill and bill. We've been to both the Anchorage and Wasilla locations and have found both have great customer service, very accommodating and person-centered, and meets a person where they are at. My husband has Parkinson's and dementia and they take a lot of time and care with him to help him address his progressive vision loss. It's very hard to know exactly what he's always communicating and Dr. Nolan and the rest of the staff have been very patient and kind to ensure they are giving him the best services possible. 5 stars for both locations! read more

The office manager Deb Foster is really an unethical manager here. Really quite unbelievable... we have used this place for glasses and contacts for the family so I went in to get contacts. When I called I shared that the paint on my frames was beginning to flake away shortly after purchasing them. They said just bring them in when you have your annual visit for the contacts. The contact visit was a little long but went okay. When I went to get the frame replaced they said now that I was five weeks past warranty so they weren't going to honor anything. The office manager wouldn't speak with me, just telling her staff no. Keep in. I d I have been here for a while and my two kids have each purchased multiple frames/glasses here in the last year. My glasses, exam and frames totaled over $1,200 on my last visit. So I need to pay another $200 for them to fix this. AMAZING. They have now lost 4 customers for life. read more

Warning! Avoid this company please. Based upon my own experience and the other reviews I have seen confirming it's not my imagination, it is my personal opinion this place is shady. The lense tech David acts like a egomaniac narcissist who raves that he is better then the doctors there that his father was some NASA engineer who made him do the work since age 9. I began to worry he was a total nut case. Only the other coworker next to him and receptionist were kind. The administrator Shirley protects this David character and will gaslight you, argue you, not call you back when promised and tell you it's your fault because you yelled at her. This being after losing (me) $300 out of pocket and $285 or so in insurance billing. They are like gangsters and want you to pay hundreds more to fix their own mistake. I have had to consult a lawyer today and proceed with a tort action if they don't pay back my insurance company for the incomplete exam, prescription and glasses. I will never receive the contacts I needed because the Dr. W guy couldn't even do the exam correct or a complete job and he definately hates his job and it shows. Shirley the administrator will appear nice at first but then turns into a barracuda and manipulates the situation to make you look bad... stone walling and playing mind games to confuse you. They also do everything they can to profit more by their mistakes and get away with illegal medical practices. David claims to be better than any of their doctors and then speaks to you like he is your doctor but was wrong with everything he said. He is not licensed to play doctor and It was absolutely bizzare. He turns into a viper and a nasty acting man later after being sickly sweet at first...who tells you to shut your mouth or else he will hang up on you for speaking and then does so after refusing to refund your money. David failed to know I was in a toric lense and insisted it was my age and or a warped lense. Then nobody told me that they no longer had 20 years worth of my records there to work from. The doctor didn't do the dilation test and then wouldn't listen that I could not see the letters on the wall out of my left eye. He said the lenses would correct it once in my eye. When I got the lenses, I couldn't see except for super far away. I had to call from their office and verify my own prescription at another office to prove I wasn't joking. They treated me like dirt from that moment on and tried to get even more money out of me to fix their mistake. The only good people were again, the coworker near David and receptionists. I then remembered this was not the first time dealing with this office and I had forgotten or I would never have gone back. I will never step foot in that office ever again and want to warn the community not to deal with these people. David especially. Shirley second that. She is more of a human resource director doing damage control. I have no glasses, no correct prescriptions, and nothing as to date from this entire experience. I am waiting still to see if the refund returns into my account as promised. I told Shirley they should be ashamed of themselves. She didn't care. Now I am waiting for them to reimburse my insurance so I can start my eye care now all over after a total loss of 8 hours and travel time for nothing including expenses. I will probably also have to proceed with legal action based on their behaviors and actions so far regarding the insurance reimbursement. They will claim they tried to accommodate but that I wouldn't listen and for finally telling and hanging up to resort to email only communication. I knew they were probably listening in with another staff member and trying to get my rise up. I am not afraid of these kinds of people and groups who work together and allow people to be hurt or set back. We all work hard and times are tough. Nobody should be abused and mistreated by their own optician office. Vision is important for others safety also while driving etc. They could care less sending you out the door in a bad set of contacts and glasses. They will I am sure respond with some negative playback making me the bad guy for finally telling at Shirley on the phone after she kept cutting me off and then doing it again as though on purpose to piss me off. David was the exact same way and it's spooky to be honest. Like they are trained and use to dealing with upset patients. Why would a doctor refuse to do a eye dilation on a patient who had done them before with contact lenses? Why would a patient want a bad prescription after telling the doctor during the exam they couldn't even see the letters he said was good. read more

I've been going to Alaska Eye Care for the past year or two and overall I've been satisfied with my experiences. I see Dr. Cook and he has always been courteous and professional. Last time I got about a week's worth sample of contact lenses. I ended up ordering them elsewhere so I could use my vision insurance to cover the cost of a pair of glasses since I needed new ones. They will submit your prescription to wherever you order contact lenses. I'm glad they accept my vision insurance since the costs would be outrageous without it. Seating area is spacious and there's a nice selection of frames. My glasses took about two weeks to make. I received a call when they were ready. I'm glad they're open on Saturdays because it's more difficult for me to make it there by 6:00 after work. They have a small private parking lot which is nice so you don't have to pay for downtown parking. My one gripe with this place is the customer service at the front desk is lacking. The lady at checkout where you pay is a bit callous. Sometimes there is no one readily available (or they spend forever talking with a customer even though someone else is waiting) so you have to wait. But that aside, solid place to get an eye exam. read more

It was great getting an appointment so soon especially after they offered an appointment in another place in two months. They were quick to schedule, super kind and great customer service. Dr Ford and his staff was super thorough and explained every test in detail. I felt very well taken care of. I have been going to Alaska Eye Care Center since I was four-years-old. I love them! Dr. Goslin is new to the team and she is very professional, courteous, friendly, and attentive. My last prescription (from elsewhere) was a bit off and she double checked everything and corrected it. I can see now better than ever! Lol. Side note - when I was four or five, they used to have drawings for jumbo stuffed animals. I won the drawing and my picture was in the paper. That sucked me in for life and I highly recommend they start that up again. :) read more

If you can find a different eye center, I'd suggest you do. The staff could care less of your circumstances. Typically you'd expect to feel welcome but that hasn't been the case. not to mention the chairs they make you sit in while you wait forever for your "scheduled" appointment are all worn out and have no support. I purchased a pair of prescription glasses on ECO Finlay 54.18.140 BLKG frames in March of this year from Alaska Eyecare Center. The frame broke at the top right quadrant and dropped my lens out when I simply pushed them up my nose to readjust them. I can't see well enough to read or drive without them. I used some cheap readers I had to put the lens back in but it wouldn't stay. I feared losing it so I had to glue it in place with a minimal drop of Superglue. An optician at Alaska Eyecare Center is telling me that because I glued them they are not covered under warranty. They required me to take off work and drive to their location to evaluate the frames after I told them over the phone I had glued the lens in to be able to drive. A.) I had to glue the lens in to drive there for them to evaluate them. B.) They could have told me over the phone they weren't going to cover them and saved me an hour of leave! They offered me a replacement at 20% off. Why would I spend another nickel on poor quality frames that are likely to break and risk losing an expensive lens, especially if the company isn't going to stand behind it's product? I'm following up with ECO but this is absurd. These were expensive glasses! Save your money and go to Costco. read more

I really like the staff and the Dr Ford is awesome. I was going to a Dr that was attached to Lens Crafters but I have eye problems and they were being lazy in checking on my eye concerns and they just kept using "advanced" procedures and could never get a straight answer, needless to say I went looking for some more serious than a mall optometrist. Dr Ford used advanced and traditional methods and eased my concerns and showed me the difference between the two and how you should use both methods to get an accurate diagnosis. read more

I've been going here for several years now. Recently I googled them to find their phone number before an upcoming appointment and saw they had pretty horrible reviews; I don't know how this is possible as every visit I've had, including today's was great. I had an appointment this morning at 9am. I was brought back about 10 minutes before my appointment by one of the eye techs (I'm not sure their proper title) for the routine tests before heading to the actual doctor. Her name was Emily. She ran through all the tests with me and helped get me through that awful puff of air into your eye test. I hate that test and I knew it was coming so it was stressing me out all morning. She kind of tricked me and it surprised me enough that my eye actually managed to stay open for the test. Emily passed me off seamlessly to Dr. Cook who I've been seeing for years. He is always personable and friendly. I knew my vision had changed and he always works patiently with me to make sure my new eye script is perfect. Dr. Cook handed me off to Cathy, who helps with contacts. She was the only one handling the contact counter with plenty of people lined up for her services. As busy as she was, she was swift and friendly. She quickly prepared my insurance estimate and put in the order for my contacts. Cathy sent me to the ladies who help you pick out glasses. The wait time for new specs is roughly 2 weeks and I wanted mine sooner so ultimately I decided to go somewhere else to get them done. Overall, my experience with them was great. There was some confusion regarding the way they were billing out my insurance but I think everything is squared away now. I hope this boosts their ratings a little bit because I believe they are a good practice and I've never had a bad experience with their care so far! read more

Previously, I left a long, detailed review about this place based on my infuriating experience with them. I left one start, wishing I could do zero. However, thanks to a great customer service experience I just had with them, I have updated my rating. My main issue is that the doctor I saw misdiagnosed me to a weaker lens, which then caused a whole hullaboo of me paying to get new lenses in my old sunglasses, only to find out from a second doctor that 1) my new prescription was weaker and 2) my old prescription was still the correct one. So, I paid for weaker lenses when the original lenses were still valid. My attempts to work with AECC led to them replacing my sunglasses with the correct prescription, the same one I came in with. This was a good start. However, they wouldn't refund the money, until now, which made me angry. That's not good customer service. After some phone calls, letters, and emails, the manager contacted me saying that they valued my patronage--and they finally showed it by giving me the money I wasted back. She was very respectful, and I appreciate that. For the great service after the difficulties, I wish I could give two and a half stars, but considering the mistake of the doctor, I'm loathe to bump it to a three. In all the years I've been wearing glasses and getting prescriptions, I have never been issued the wrong one. The manager asked me to return, and I am not sure. If I do, and they do a good job, I will increase their rating. read more

I've been going to Alaska Eye Care Center since I first got glasses when I was a kid (almost 30 years ago! Gasp!). I started at the Wasilla office and usually go there but this year ended up at the Anchorage office due to our schedule and the fact that our preferred Dr. only works in the Valley one day a week. Both offices have professional competent staff and get you in and out pretty promptly. The Anchorage office location is pretty convenient even coming from the Valley and is on the park strip so you've got a nice relaxing view while you wait. They have a nice selection of frames in all price ranges and a large waiting area. read more

My rating is based on this business's Billing Department /Clerk at the Anchorage Location. I am covered by 4 very good insurance company's of which this business accepts and bills. My last visit was for an eye infection so billed as medical. The bill clerk C doesn't know how to or refuses to bill the insurance company's but does put in some time sending me the bills. I have done her work to get the bills through the insurance company which is her job but because of her incompetence at her job, I forwarded the bills forward. This said and done, I am glad to be rid of this place and will not go back there nor will I refer anyone to go there, in fact I'll let everyone I know not to go there. There are a lot of good Optometry Businesses in Anchorage and it only took me two days to find another one. read more

I'm sitting in a waiting area while writing this...because my appointment was at 5:00pm and it is now 5:49 and I'm still waiting. This is my second time coming to this place this week and today should have been just a re-check of my lens fitting and a possible dilation. Due to the clinic closing at 6pm, we did not do the dialation. I am giving this place a 3 star for now because of the wait time but leaning more towards a 4 star because I feel it has the potential to do better. The Opthalmologist did apologize and said it typically isnt like this. I do work in the health field and can empathize with the specialists because I understand some days are just crazy...although they are busy, people were smiling and directed me where to go and what to expect, something I appreciate. I try to look at the positives, so here are some "Pros" I would highlight: *Open on Saturday * front desk was friendly * Opthalmologist was knowledgable and appeared approachable even though he may not have spare time to chit chat * Optomologist was funny and engaging, chatted about my up coming trip etc * They have a wide array of stylish glasses * they have up to date technology Would I continue going and would I refer? I will continue going at least for 2 more appointments to see if there us a trend... I would refer those who r busy and need saturday appointments. read more

Dr. Giesey is my eye doctor and she is wonderful! I've had to be careful with my eyecare for the past 52 years. In those years, I've had a wide spectrum of care and I will say that Dr. Giesey and the staff at Alaska Eye Care Centers are at the excellence end of the scale. Specifically, Dr. Giesey took time to educate me about changes in my eye health. She helped me find the right kind of treatment for chronic dry eyes and it has been so effective that I was able to wear contact lenses after years of not tolerating them. The contact lens folks were very helpful and I was able to take home two kinds of lenses to try out. I made my choice and am now back into contact lenses. But, I do still require glasses for certain kinds of work. That's where David in the optical department, and the rest of the optical folks really went above and beyond to help me find frames that would accommodate my progressive lenses and look nice, too. I love my new glasses! My only problem is making the daily decision of contact lenses or glasses because both provide excellent correction, comfortable wear, and I love how I look in them! The doctor was great but the office staff is horrible. No communication, was told appointment was going to be 1/2 hour only to placed in a waiting area and forgotten about. Five office staff stood sitting in reception and I was told only 1 could check me out. Bill was calculated by hand, and took two staff to come up with for a simple exam cost. Very unnerving and feel the need to double check their calculations. A basic eye exam took over 2 hours and only the doctor apologized. This place used to be good but has taken a nosedive. I was in need of contacts and received excellent service, from the receptionist to the eye doctor to the contact specialist. Dr. Reber took care of me and didn't rush but was thorough and listened closely to my questions. The equipment seemed state of the art and the contacts I picked up work perfectly. Sure, the eye exam was fine. The problem was that when I was checking out I got charged $110 for the contact lens portion of my eye exam, which was not covered by my insurance. This was news to me, because when I made the appointment I specifically asked about this and was told it was fully covered. The employee at the counter told me "With VSP its hard to tell initially what is covered and what isn't." That's a valid answer, unfortunately the individual who made the appointment did not say that, but rather chose to tell me it was fully covered and I would pay $0. They sent me home with trial contacts that retail for $670 for a years supply, which I certainly will not be purchasing. All and all I feel like I have wasted my time and been charged extra for it. If you like surprise bills, I would highly recommend this place. If you work for a living, you will be better served elsewhere. read more

Everyone is looking for a good place to go for eye exams and glasses. This place is located just off downtown Anchorage on 9th Ave, with good street parking and a limited parking lot. Since there are many eye examiners on staff, you can usually get in pretty quick. They stock a good selection of glasses and they can special order ones they don't stock. My biggest complaint is since they are such a large business they lack good customer service. They also take over 2 weeks, sometimes 3, to get your glasses made. One last hint, always call to check on your glasses. They don't call you promptly when your glasses are ready! read more

This place is the WORST. First, the "doctor" told me that I was lying when I told him which lens (1 or 2) looked better. You're right "doctor" I want to lie about the better rx for my contacts because, you know, I can sell them on the street or something. I'm not trying to get oxy or something here. I just want to be able to see. Then I go to pick out glasses and their selection literally changes every single day. It is as if they only have that 1 demo pair and that is it. I went back 3 days after the appointment and 2 pairs that I liked were gone. I finally picked out a pair and paid for them. 2 days later they called and said they wanted to upgrade the lenses and I owed them another $25. No real reason for upgrading the lens, just thought I should. I will never return to this place. read more

Warning: This place is exorbitantly expensive for a routine visit if you don't have vision insurance. I was charged $347 just to get a new contacts/glasses prescription! That's $288 for a "new patient eye exam," which was just a normal exam, and $59 for the "contact evaluation and fitting." I was shocked at this way-above-normal rate and asked whether they'd negotiate with me as many clinics do with patients paying out-of-pocket. They said they would not. This is why people turn to those little retail clinics. :-/ Their eyeglasses frames are mostly in the $250 to $400 range. read more

This place is very expensive, and the service that you get in return is lacking in a serious way. I made two appointments to go here, one for me and the other for my wife, because they were covered by our insurance. From the moment we checked in I knew it was a mistake. Staff were fairly rude, the wait time wasn't bad, the doctor was nice despite trying to convince me to buy glasses there instead of somewhere else. After the exam, I go to checkout to find out that an exam for a first time patient was almost $400, that is absolutely ridiculous. We'll be going to our previous optometrist in South Anchorage, despite the fact he isn't covered on my wife's insurance, it would have been cheaper for me to just pay out of pocket. The glasses here are overpriced as well, Eyemart Express people, excellent service, great prices. read more

With all of the walk-in eye care centers that have popped up around town, not to mention Costco, etc.. Alaska Eye Care Center is definitely not the cheapest place in Anchorage. But the doctors are awesome and the front counter staff are helpful and friendly. They'll let you know how much much your insurance covers for frames before you pick them out - handy since some of them are pricey. I've seen several different docs over the years and they're all great, but I like Dr. Jim Falconer the best and try to always schedule with him! :0) read more

I ended up with a bill for over a $100 dollars even though they told me that lens replacement was a 100% covered by my insurance. The service was decent (not exceptional in the least or for what they charge) and you ALWAYS wait at least 30 minutes minimum to be seen (DO NOT come here if you are on any kind of time crunch). I will not be coming here again but they do have a decent selection of glasses (expensive) and the contact people are good at what they do but other than that there are tons of other places to get a mediocre eye exam done. read more

The doctor I saw was great but the support staff is awful ! Waited 15 minutes to get my glasses all the dispensing opticians at least 5-6 were all gathered in the room could not take a minute to give me my glasses. There were no other customers . read more

Absolutely terrible practice. They told my husband it was fine to drive while his eyes were so dilated he could not pick out his glasses. They said, "It only affects your near vision; just wear some sunglasses." Being a sunny day in winter, this is a seriously dangerous recommendation bordering on malpractice. Even a department store optometry office encourages you to bring someone to drive you out - or at least wait a few minutes until the meds wear off. Oh, and yeah, they sell products to correct people's vision, for, say, driving, as required by the DMV. Had he gotten into an accident following their recommendation, whether it was or was not his fault, the liability alone would be a huge headache. Medical offices have *one fundamental job* - ensure patient safety and comply with regulation - and they failed at a basic level. Never mind the difficulty for my husband trying to pick out glasses costing hundreds of dollars while he can't see. They also failed to give him his prescription as he left. Use this facility and trust their 'expertise' at your own risk. Looking at other's experiences, I'm glad they outed themselves early and that we have other options. We will be getting his glasses elsewhere. read more
