What can you say about a 70 year old brand, that hasn't already been said? Not a lot, but let me try: Being in Louisville, KY this week, I decided to drive the Bourbon Trail. You see The Jim Beam Distillery, The Four Roses Distillery, The Bullet Distillery, The Old Forester Distillery and my favorite, The Makers Mark Distillery. The Makers campus is huge, beautiful and well thought out. The throngs of people taking this tour (every 15 minutes) is quite formidable. This tour starts off with a detailed synopsis of how and why Makers Mark Bourbon came into existence; and ends in a tasting room where you rate five of their spirits. Of course as in any tour you "exit through the gift shop"! Visiting the Makers Mark Factory was such a lovely way to spend two hours. I highly recommend it. read more

Wonderful experience overall. Entrance was filled with cool art. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. Our greeter and our tour guide, Andrew, were friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining. We had an amazing morning/afternoon at Maker's Mark Distillery. It is a bit of a drive from Louisville but well worth it! The grounds are meticulously kept, the tour guides are friendly and know their information, and the restaurant serves a delicious lunch! The restaurant was busy the day we were there so we sat outside instead of waiting for a table inside their temporary restaurant. They had a fire going outside and the weather was beautiful. My active-duty Navy buddy and I completed the Sip and Stroll tour on Sunday with our tour guide, Taylor, and it was amazing. Started off with a DELICIOUS Gold Rush cocktail, stroll around the distillery grounds, and learn a lot about the history and future of Maker's Mark. We entered the barrel room and tasted a reserve bourbon (bottle escapes my memory), but it was great, and the scent in the barrel room was heavenly - I never wanted to leave At the conclusion of the tour, she gave a patch to both of us and thanked us for our service, I'm retired from the Navy. My buddy and I then went back to the welcome center and sampled some different bottles, and then went to the gift shop where I bought and dipped my own bottle of Maker's Mark 46. We had such a wonderful experience on the Maker's Mark tour! From the moment we arrived, it was clear how much care goes into the grounds -- everything was beautifully maintained, clean, and inviting. The paths and gardens made for a very pleasant walk through the property. When my fiancé and I started planning our Bourbon Trail trip there was one distillery that was a must to visit - Maker's Mark. Luckily, we were able to get a tour booked a month before our visit (learned the hard way some places book up 6 months before...) We arrived to a beautiful campus and equally beautiful welcome center where you could order a cocktail or coffee while you wait for your tour. Our guide, Jeremy, was as insightful as he was fun to show us around Makers. We toured the distillery, print shop where they make the labels for the bottles, a barrel house and the wax room where each bottle gets its signature wax dip. The next stop was a tasting room where we got to try 5 different Maker's Mark whisky's (you learn why they don't use an "e" on the tour!). Each was more delicious than the next and good news - all available in the gift shop! After the tasting, we decided to buy a few bottles which they sell without the wax. Why? Because you get to dip the bottle in the hot wax! Afterwards, there's a little kitchen/bar where we had the old fashioned, spiced pear gold rush and pimento cheese. The cheese was good and the drinks were absolutely delicious. Maker's Mark is a fantastic experience when on the Bourbon Trail! read more

My wife and I got to spend two weeks in Florida for our 10 year anniversary and on our way back, we stopped at Maker's Mark for their Maker's Mark Tour. The area surrounding Maker's Mark Distillery is absolutely gorgeous! What is especially nice is that Maker's Mark's buildings, the landscaping around their buildings, the sculptures and statues on their grounds nicely complimented the beautiful scenery and it did not detract from it which is wonderful. Inside the Visitor Center, which also has a bar, is very beautiful and has beautiful stained glass, glass sculptures, nice looking and comfortable chairs, and the light fixtures are attractive as well. The Tasting Room is very nice as well, well lit, and very pretty. At the end of the Tour you get to go in their Gift Shop which is very nice and, if you purchase a bottle of bourbon, you or you and who you're traveling with have an opportunity to dip your bottle of Maker's Mark Bourbon in their signature wax which was a cool experience! Our Tour Guide Michelle was also very friendly and great to be hosted by. We finished our whole Maker's Mark experience by having a late lunch at their Restaurant which was had very good food and was beautiful to look at. Everything about Maker's Mark was very welcoming and friendly, my wife and I will definitely be back! Thank you Maker's Mark for such a wonderful end to a wonderful trip!!! P.S. I've been told from many people that Makers is all about the experience for the customer. I would say I agree, I have a new appreciation for the company the history, the quality and patience that has gone into such a great product and amazing piece of property and incredible facilities here. The tour and tasting really gives you a sense of history and perspective why some of the products have such a premium price. I think MM still have a flare that you won't find anywhere else. With how they rotate barrels in the Rick rooms and how the use 2nd stage barrel with type of planks to give it a more rich and distinct profile. And you get to dip your own bottles. Overall, we had a lovely time on our tour. Being able to buy a drink prior to the tour was nice. May want to arrive about 20 minutes before your tour to have ample time to enjoy your drink. Even though you can take it on the first part of the tour, it's not that long until you have to dispose of it. There is a decent amount of walking. My 79-year-old mother managed to get through it but was pretty exhausted by the end. Luckily there is a shuttle to take you to the parking lot afterwards. The tasting is at the end of the tour (be careful with the cask strength, it about choked my mother...we needed extra water). They do not have any ice or enough water for the bourbon. So if you don't usually drink warm, neat bourbon it can be a little rough on the throat. Definitely buy a bottle to dip at the end of the tour. It's a really fun experience. Google maps took us on a long and winding backroad path to get there. Don't recommend that, it was scary at times. Double check your map apps and try to come through Loretto. Would recommend doing a tour here. The grounds are beautiful. Go when the weather is cooler. There is outdoor time with sun exposure on the tour. And lastly, since I always try to comment on bathrooms in my reviews: definitely go to the bathroom by the check-in desk...it's really lovely. read more

Our barrel was tapped and we wax dipped our bottles to bring home and share with friends and family. Beautiful location with plenty of room to explore. I love that you can bring your dogs - just not on the tasting or tour. Hubs did the tour and tasting while I stayed in the check in area with the dogs. It was an extremely hot day so it was nice to sit in the AC. Very dog friendly and the staff was so nice. Our tasting was at noon and we were driving from Lexington. We thought we would catch a place to grab a bite along the way but we were wrong. Grab something before you start your journey. Makers Mark has a dining option but due to an event planned later in the day, they were only serving drinks and snacks (chips). The tour lasts about an hour and ends with a tasting by the gift shop area, where you will then have an option to buy a bottle and put the wax on. The history here and the scenery are incredible. Really the most beautiful, historic buildings on the Bourbon Trail in my opinion. The bourbon cellar was so cool to step in to. It keeps itself cool (in the 50s) all year long. This tour guide was my favorite of our whole vacation. He was very charismatic, funny, and was able to answer everyone's questions. I like how much this distillery displays art. Art all around the campus, within the rickhouse, and filling the visitor center. Also, the coolest bathrooms around, funny enough! My only complaint is that when you walk in the lobby you would hardly know it's a Maker's Mark distillery as they barely had any signage around. I would have liked to take a picture with a sign in the front. At the end of the tour, everyone has the opportunity to buy a bottle and dip it into the red wax! I went on a couple distillery tours on my last trip to Kentucky, and this one was my favorite. It's the most picturesque. Theres a quaint little garden right next to the visitors center you can walk through while waiting for your tour, a babbling creek rums through the property, and all of the buildings are painted black with red shudders that have bottle cutouts - its very cute. I love the copper distilling equipment, the giant wooden vats of bubbling grain, the sweet, spicy smell of the aging barrels, the cool, cavern-like cave, and the end of the tour with the Chihuly glass overhead.
