I've been on the tour before and it is great, considering some limitations due to Covid, but we couldn't get a booking when we had friends from Florida in town, so we just brought them here to look around. We were able to tell them enough about the distillery and we had a nice time. Star Hill is another story! Since Covid and changes in management you only have two choices for food on the menu-meatballs or pimento cheese with chips. 3 meatballs for $15 is outrageous. And the bees and yellow jackets were horrible! No one could enjoy a drink or food from being bothered by them. It was so stressful. So, if you have heard of the great lunches you can have at Star Hill, you may want to call first or have a back up plan becaUe as of this review, don't plan on eating here. I also feel the price of the distillery tour is a little pricey. It is the most expensive one on the bourbon trail. read more

7 years ago I signed up to become a Maker's Mark Ambassador. Well, the time finally came and my barrel was ready which meant a trip to Kentucky! Maker's Mark is HUGE! The property is beautiful and easy to just walk around and explore, without a tour! Our tour was complimentary due to my status and it was so much fun being around other ambassadors who were there for the same reason. Our guide Laura was hilarious and made everyone feel like a lifelong friend. The grounds were fun to explore and learn everything and anything about Maker's Mark. The tour ended with a tasting, followed by being able to dip and take home our own bottles from our barrel! The dipping was SO much fun and kind of intimidating! You get geared up in an apron, goggles, gloves, and sleeves. We took two bottles home (Delta broke one but that's another story for another review) and grabbed a drink at their onsite bar before the hour drive back to Louisville. I would absolutely come here again. read more

This was a very well planned tour. Tim was the greatest. He has very good knowledge of the History and the product. Tim also has a good sense of humor and is very easy to talk to. The campus of Makers Mark is remarkable! There is a large amount of Dale Chihuly glass on the property, on the ceiling and in the welcome center. I highly recommend calling ahead to book a custom experience! The grounds are also amazing for exploring on a sunny day! We set up a custom brunch and cocktail mixing session for 9 adults with 3 infants and 3 kids tagging along (it was a private experience and thus under 21 was accommodated) and it was phenomenal! Going into brunch we had no details of what we would be enjoying and their chef did a wonderful job of using local specialties and mastery of the culinary craft to make the best Ale8 biscuits, sausage gravy (Jake's fresh country sausage from 150 Quick Stop), eggs, with a bit of prosciutto, and bourbon creme filled doughnuts. Our cocktail mixing portion of brunch include starting off with a fun take on a boozy version of a mimosa, Bloody Mary with tons of options/variations, and finishing off with shaken drink that was a mix of bourbon and coffee liquor. Our tour guide Woody was awesome. Extremely knowledgeable, and he had a lot of enthusiasm about Bourbon. I have drank more Makers Mark than any other type... It has a special place of in my heart. All my bro's drink Makers Mark. We call it "MM" for short when texting... Two finger pour, or three finger pour. Big tyme, big tyme. I love the spicy flavor, and the heat of Makers Mark. There are numerous humorous stories I can share with you about my late (and late late) evenings and escapades with Makers Mark. Staying up all night, til 3, 4, in the mornings. Getting heat on... Solving the world's problems... Listening to Exile on Main Street. Makers Mark and I have been there together. I have dabbled in several other brands... And there are many other respectable, and reputable brands out there. Some (on purely a quality level) are also considered to be better by enthusiasts. And they may be correct. But, in the end, the most drinkable, and the flavor profile, and my personal favorite, and personal choice is Makers Mark - regular. Back in 2013 when they were bought by a Japanese company and I heard they were going to change the recipe I immediately bought 13 (large 1.75L bottles of MM) and kept it on file in preparation for the worst. I took a picture and wrote Rob Samuels an email... He responded to me (personally) and remarked they decided not to change the recipe, and that it was feedback from purveyors like myself that helped their decision. Back to the tour. It was epic. Beautiful. Extremely worthwhile. Like going back in time, but they have kept everything original as possible. I can't wait to go back and do it again. And also, a special thank you to Julio? Christopher was a wonderful guide during our two hour tour of Maker's Mark. In all honesty, we came into the day not the biggest fans of Maker's and left with three bottles of bourbon. The in depth history of the KY bourbon industry and extensive knowledge of the entire distilling process that was on show at Star Hill Farms was wonderful. Being able to hand dip our bottles made the experiences particularly unique. Unlike some tours, the tasting was well spread throughout the visit so we did not feel overwhelmed by the different notes in each as we had time between. We were given a wonderful tour of the facility, an A to Z immersive look into how their whisky is made and it's long history. We took the ambassador tour and it was a lot of fun. The grounds are beautiful and there is a lot to learn. I found it very interesting. There was a tasting at the end which could've been a little better (bigger pours). The disappointment was when the internet went out at the gift shop which they said happens frequently. In other words, it was cash only which probably saved me a bunch of money. We didn't buy near as much as we planned. If you're a bourbon fan, this is a must visit. read more

They walked you through the process in detail and the tasting was fun. They also had several bars open with fun cocktails. You can go to the gift shop and dip your own bottle if you purchase one as well. Definitely do this tour if you're going on the bourbon trail! Beautiful facilities and grounds, fantastic tour and guide, excellent tasting room and experience. Overall top notch. If you are looking to visit or do tastings/tours at the bigger KY distilleries, Maker's Mark and Woodford Reserve are our top picks.
