In…read moreorder to save money (which I spent all on wine!), and because our accommodations had a kitchen, my friends and I decided to purchase groceries and make our own meals, instead of eating out. Being practical (as well as the only girl in our group of four), I suggested that we purchase groceries in Vancouver and bring them with us. But my friend, who had been to the area earlier in the summer, said it wasn't necessary, that there was a grocery store nearby. However, he didn't mention it was a Buy-Low, and I stupidly assumed is was a Safeway, or some other decent grocery store. My friend also said that he had checked the store hours, and they close at 9pm. We rushed from Vancouver in order to make it by 9pm, and arrived at 8:15pm, and saw a big sign outside stating that the store closes at 8pm. Luckily we had had a quick bite to eat a few hours earlier at some crappy food court in some sad mall on our way to Osoyoos, because it turned out that there were no grocery stores open past 8pm; the nearby pub stopped serving food at 10pm (we arrived there at 10:15pm); and the nearby pizza place wasn't open, despite it being a Friday night. Anyway, we went to Buy-Low the next day, and while we were able to purchase what we needed, the food was expensive! Maybe it was because the store was in Osoyoos, the middle of nowhere, but the prices were much higher than even Safeway! Decent selection of items, but the with the high prices and short operating hours, it was like shopping in Reykjavik (although Reykjavik had one 24 hour grocery store, while the other one closed at 6pm). This Buy-Low is THE secret to a great Osoyoos vacation!…read more Fools that we are, we assumed that (as in our own neighborhood) the Buy-Low was the discount, not-very-good grocery store. In fact, it's by far the best grocery shop we've discovered in these parts...so good that if it were in Vancouver, it's probably where we'd shop. Like the name promises, it's a well-priced source of all the essentials. But it also has an excellent produce department, a wide assortment of (mostly conventionally raised) meat and fish, a remarkably eclectic bakery and a really great range of East Indian (and to a lesser extent, Asian and Mexican) foods. We found everything from buffalo mozzarella (several kinds!) to gluten-free baking supplies to delicious spanish cookie/cracker things (Rosales tortas) that have a cult following on the internet, but which we'd never previously discovered. All 3 items were in stock. So we purchased those items inside. One of the items that they said were out of stock were the taquitos. As you can see, they were there. A few days ago I walked in and the entrance was covered in garbage and inside the store was no better. I called and spoke with a manger but she blames it on the "local workers", saying they were messy instead of taking the responsibility for her store being dirty. It was pretty disappointing that she made a slightly racist comment. The workers never want to help and seem to wander around aimlessly on their phones. I'm not trying to shame anyone at all but a lot of the clothes the workers wear are pretty dirty looking and don't even look like they want to be there at all. There was a worker saying he didn't even want to be there, which is silly to say so loudly in front of customers. Maybe they don't, but maybe customer service isn't for them then, and maybe the managing should be doing a better job at managing.

We loaded up on stuff to feed a bunch of wedding-goers for a few days; we got starchy stuff, vegetables, sparkling water, condiments, and so on. Prices are a little higher than most stores, but the quality is fine. They don't have specialty items like deli sandwiches and charcuterie and stuff like that, but all the staples are available, and the butcher section is spot on. Lots of local, carefully-raised stuff from ranches in the area. We thought we would have to pack in everything we were going to eat, but were able to pick up most of what we needed right in town.

My favorite dishes are chilled gazpacho (in the summer), their yummy quiche, and their great Asian soup). If you're not free to lunch there or need provisions for a picnic, they have to-go containers and prepackaged slices of quiche, soup, sandwiches, etc. in the cooler at the back of the store. The Co-op produces bakery goods daily, and I especially like their olive bread. I also visit the Co-op to purchase many difficult to find items, such as specialty cheeses (e.g., fresh mozzarella, Jarlsberg Swiss, aged Irish cheddar, etc.) and imported olives. Seating is limited. There are three tables in the front of the store near the self-serve food service area, and another at the back of the store. Figuring out how the self-service works can take a moment, but the folks that work there are friendly and willing to explain the process. One warning: they don't tag their pastries to show the date they are baked, so ask before purchasing to make sure what you're buying is fresh.

The cashier lady was ringing up my groceries and asked me if the apricots on the belt were peaches or nectarines. I told her that they were neither and were actually apricots. She then looks at me accusingly as if I'm trying to steal and says "Those aren't apricots. Apricots are small. Are they peaches or nectarines? I again inform her that the small, fuzzy orange and red things that look like apricots in front of her are indeed apricots and she responds by taking the bag of fruit and walking over to the produce section to see if she can figure out what these mysterious objects that she has made it perfectly clear she thinks I'm trying to steal are. After she confirms I'm not trying to steal peaches or nectarines by declaring them as apricots (which are more expensive anyway), she finally goes back to the line she has been failing to keep moving and finishes ringing up my groceries. Maybe it's because I was a bit sweaty because I was stopping in on a bike trip but this woman had a real attitude with me when all I was trying to do was buy some apricots. One of the reviews that's "not recommended" seems to share a similar experience where someone was presumed to be stealing because of how they looked.
