I had food from here many times on my stay in Halifax. The only bad thing I can say is that they close too soon and at the end of the day the lasagna was a little dry, but still better than most. I tasted home made. Most mornings, I had coffee, they had flavoured, light, medium, dark, etc. I just bought mine here instead of Tim's because it was better and I had a choice. As a traveller I appreciated the packets of oatmeal, yogurt, carrots and other veg. The muffins were the best. Everything is al La crate. But that's fine, they made me a sandwich, it was good. Had a bit of a language/communication problem with the cashier. I think it was just that she was still training and learning the menu and how things are served. I appreciate a place like this near the hotel. I don't always feel like a big expensive breakfast snd this place hit the spot with yogurt, toast , hot table items. The owner/manager was helpful. I'd recommend if you are in the area or passing by. It's close to the Barrington hotel and is accessible by a walkway over the street. read more

The fact that I haven't done a review for Mama Gratti's yet is mind blowing. I love this place; there have been weeks where I went four mornings in a row... okay, maybe I shouldn't admit that. Located in Scotia Square Mall, Mana Gratti's is like mini-mart version of Subway, only way better - and locally owned/operated. They have a variety of pre-made, quick and easy, sandwiches and salads for you to grab and go OR you can walk up to the sandwich bar and have it your way, again, much like Subway. I've only ever had their breakfast sandwiches, on bread or on a bagel (they have a lot of different bagel options) they're always delicious and filling. With egg, bacon/ham/sausage, cheese and 3 veggie toppings for around $4.00 you can't go wrong. I recommend their red pepper mayo - delicious! This place is slammin' in the morning! It can get overwhelming with the crowd/line-up of people, but I'm usually in and out of their pretty quickly. read more

As I ventured down today with my sis, the place was bustling as per usual. With an empty fridge at home and hungry eyes, the plush offerings had me in a pondering daze. I lust. This eatery covers all ground, and without making one feel guilty about eating out. Sandwiches, salads, and wraps are all prepared with fresh doses of veggies and quality meats. I cannot emphasize FRESH enough-- this is priority here. Homemade-style treats like brownies and squares are wrapped up and ready to go. Various fruit and veggie trays are available, as well as lone fruits (bananas, apples, and even full cantaloupes) . Juices, smoothies, pasta salads, cereal, individualized sauce packets, plain pitas-- Mama Gratti's makes it so easy to eat healthy in a hurry, as everything is ready to go! And while they do have a fully stocked shelving of pre-packaged goods, its freshly made and delicious. Customized meals are available as well by the counter staff. Cordial, efficient service and making fresh food a priority has won me over. Besides the unfortunate samosas, Mama Gratti's delivers a full star rating. Succulent times to say the least. I'm not one to post reviews on anything really but this is well deserved. I have worked near Scotia Square for nearly 9 years and have eaten at Mama Gratti's on many occasions during that time. What has been consistent is this....the items that you have made fresh at the counter are good. The salads, wraps, fruit etc. in the cool area are made with leftovers from the fresh area. Nothing has an expiry and it's not uncommon to see wilted salads and rotten fruit, even early in the morning, suggesting that they are carried over from the day before. Aside from the food, the owner treats the staff horrendously and I don't say that lightly. She belittles, and berates them in front of customers daily. I saw one staff member reduced to tears for dropping a slice of bacon on the floor during the morning rush. Unacceptable. read more

Mama Gratti's is one busy shop. It is just one steady pace going through there at lunch time. It is a very light menu, mostly healthy food. Great sandwiches, wraps and hot soups. You can grab a tea/coffee and muffin for under $2.00. They have some great snacks of fresh fruit and vegetables. I grabbed a container of fruit, it had mostly kiwi in it, and was great. But if you step over to one side of the shop you can have them make a salad or sandwich to your specifications...the line moves quickly, I promise, after all you do want time to actually eat the delicious treats. I for one, chose the hot food. Today's soup (there were three) smelled awesome and I was tempted by the potato & bacon soup, but the mac 'n cheese won out. Very tomatoey and flavourful. read more

The issue with Mama Gratti's is customer service - as in, it doesn't exist. The cash register workers don't make eye contact, rarely say hello, and honestly just act as though they are doing you a favor... Not good.The folks serving food (with a few exceptions) are just not nice...borderline rude. I've actually not entered the deli a few times just because of who was working behind the sandwich bar. Whole place looks clean and from what I could see there were no concerns regarding the work surfaces being gross. There is no provided seating. They accept cash, credit, debit and they do have tap. They do not give you a bag unless you ask and I'm fairly certain they don't give napkins. I'm going with 4 stars because I find the staff a little abrupt, disinterested, and stressed. They're clearly under pressure to get customers in & out as quickly as possible. Nobody wants to stop and chat beyond "what is your order?" and "your total is". That's probably a plus for business folks, but I'm a student and appreciate the chatty barista at Starbucks, you know? read more

Despite the fact that the customer service is often questionable at best (the owner or manager has zero customer service skill whatsoever), I kept going there the rare times that I need to buy my lunch. Some of the prices are over the top for the amount of food but you can get a nice sized wrap for a decent dollar amount, and I have enjoyed their falafel salad on several occasions. However today was sadly my last time eating there. I picked up a falafel salad and I was so sick to my stomach within a short amount of time of finishing. I would write it off as coincidence except that this is not the first time that I've felt sick after eating there and when I mentioned it to my colleagues several other people chimed in that they've had the same problems. I don't know if it was one of the salad items that made me sick or if the tahini sauce had gone bad, and I don't really care. All I know is that I had a hard time focusing on work this afternoon and was grateful for some gravol to dial down the queasiness. I work in Purdy's Wharf so this location is a great lunch time spot. I have only been here once so far as I try to limit my lunch time dining so I don't go broke. It is quite a busy spot but I can definitly understand why. They have a variety of premade items like wraps, sandwiches, salads, etc but you can also have your sandwich made fresh as well. I opted for a premade wrap which was on a spinach wrap with chicken, cheese, spinach, cucumber, tomato, green pepper and red pepper mayo. I also bought a square dessert. Both were great and were reasonably priced, ($4.75 for the wrap and $2.19 for the square). My only suggestion would be to label the sqaures, some are obvious (like a rice crispie) but the one I chose I had no idea what it actually was, except that chocolate was involved. If you work in the area, I definitly reccommend trying this place out. I believe that they also cater, which would be a good option for business meetings and whatnot. read more

I have a lot of love for Mama Gratti's! This fresh lil market in Scotia Square knows how to do lunch right - walking the perfect line between not-going-to-put-you-in-a-food-coma and lettuce-alone-does-not-a-salad-make. All premade and packaged for the busy lunch-hour rush, you can take your pick between sammies, salads, cheese and crackers, veggies and dips, pasta salads, and some delicious baked goods. Stroll through and take your pick off the shelf, bring it up to the cash, and you're on your way! The other option is the sandwich bar where cool and friendly staff whip something up for you on the spot based off a pretty decent menu. Definitely tasty especially when you slap it on their ciabatta, this process just dulls my enthusiasm a bit because you end up trying to line up, order, and wait for your food in the same space where people are lining up to pay at the cash. On one side, you have a sandwich bar (I recommend tofu veggie wrap with feta cheese and honey mustard instead of the vinaigrette) and the daily special. On the other side you have pasta salads and soups. The back wall is a wide selection of beverages. The centre island is a mix of treats (hmm... brownies), prepared meal items (which, unfortunately are not always well-labeled) and snacks (e.g., grapes and cheese, sliced fruit, etc). Two things really irritate me about the place. 1. The coffee S U C K S. 2. Servers that call you "darling", "dear", or "honey". I stopped in here to look for some breakfast. I was tired of overpriced hotel food. I had a fantastic breakfast sandwich here. Bacon, real egg (yolk still tender), process cheese, on a choice of English muffin, bagel or toast. I regret not taking a picture. There are toppings to be had as well. I chose spinach, tomatoes and sprouts. But the red pepper mayo made it really standout. 5$ for sandwich and a great coffee. Large selection of blends. They have soups, salads, hot lunch dishes, sandwiches, breakfast items, smoothies, gelato and a wide variety of snacks already packaged and ready to go. My biggest recommendation at Mama Gratti's is their enormous and delicious Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. Trust me... you wouldn't regret it. They are always perfectly cooked with the slightest taste of cinnamon that sets it apart from any other cookie. I'm very grateful Mama Gratti's exists. It's a great place to grab a sandwich, salad or hot special. The prices are reasonable and the cafeteria layout means you can jump in and out quickly. My regular purchases: Greek salad - $4.50 Salad duo (I recommend the couscous) - $3.95 Fridays, I highly recommend the Mediterranean Plate for $5.50 One thing I don't recommend is the teriyaki stirfry. It looks good and the portions are generous, but the vegetables are always way undercooked. The inconsistency in some of the specials is the only reason for a three rather than a four. Not bad. Not great by any means either. Coffee's usually fresh, although sometimes a bit weak. But it's cheap - cheaper than Tim's and it's still better than that swill. Even crap coffee it's hard to find one for a buck, so big ups to Mama Gratti's for that one! Best of all is their selection. There's so much yummy goodies and plenty of healthy snacks or lunchtime meal options. Scotia Squares generally blows, save for the Food Court. And Mama Gratti's is definitely contributing to the Food Court redemption of Scotia Square! read more

THIS PLACE KICKS SERIOUS BEHIND. I wish this was closer to my work because it really is the perfect spot to grab a bite on your lunch break. They have such a great variety of perfect lunch food, by that I mean stuff you can grab and go. My favorite thus far is the sandwiches. I've gotten the roasted chicken and bacon one each time. They are fantastic. The bread is absolutely to die for, it is soo so soft. They have a billion types of sauces, my favorite has been the red pepper mayo and spicy mayo. The ingredients are fresh and the chicken is big chunks of white meat chicken. It really is one of the best sandwiches I've had in the HRM. I've also gotten their pasta and their banana peanut butter chocolate smoothie. Both are great. The pasta I bought had chicken, bacon, penne and a cream sauce in it. It was pretty simple but really hit the spot. The banana peanut butter smoothie is delicious, they put protein powder in it, so its pretty filling. Yep, give it a try. read more

It's located in the food court so it has to compete with all the fast food joints, but that's not what this place is. Mama's serves food that has a lovely home-cooked quality to it. It doesn't feel like you're eating a bucket of grease when you chow down on something from here. I like when food courts have a healthier alternative. I sporadically visit Mama Gratti's as sometimes a greasy teen burger or expensive kebab plate is just not up my alley. I have officially ended my relationship with this place today. I have found that the consistency of their offerings to be 50-50 at best. I either have a good meal or a very bad meal. Today I just wanted some Vegetable Beef Barley soup. Not too much to ask for right? What I got was mostly broth with a few pieces of carrot, potato, very little barley and 1 piece of fatty beef. Sometimes I have gotten their Chicken Caesar wrap and aside from the fake bacon bits it is ok. I went with my sister last week and she had gotten the teriyaki stir fry and some of the vegetables had not been peeled. I had gotten this one time as well and there was no flavour to it at all. Another co-worker had said that they had gotten a salad with dirt on the lettuce. I will be go elsewhere from now on. read more

I have not been to Mama Gratti's in quite a while, but decided to stop in today for the salmon and cream cheese on a bagel for $3.99. Yum. Except.. I thought (foolishly).. maybe I'll ask to get it on a pita instead. So I asked, "Are you able to make the salmon and cream cheese on a pita for the $3.99 special?" ... Response. "Well, it would be the cost of a veggie wrap plus salmon ($3.99 plus $1.00). Me: "Gee, are pitas super expensive over bagels?" Response: "No., but if you want vegggies and stuff with the salmon it costs more." Me: "Oh, does the bagel with salmon and cream cheese exclude veggies?" Response: "No, you could get veggies with that." UM. WHAT? Next comment from server: "We can make whatever you want if you pay us... " Me: Whatever, just make it on a bagel." I have never seen a business be so unaccommodating in my life. Seriously, how difficult is it to replace a bagel with a pita?? They are both bread! I've been searching for an inexpensive wrap in downtown Halifax for a while now, and Mama Gratti's was a place I was happy to discover. They have filling, healthy wraps for a good price. The only problem is the customer service. I've had the same girl serve me during the past three days I've visited. She doesn't make eye contact or greet me, and she doesn't ask me what's okay and not okay in my wrap before she makes it. She's always been busy asking the people in line behind me if they need bags for their wraps - while throwing my napkin on top of my wrap and not asking me, even though I walked there, will be walking home, and would gladly accept a bag if it was actually offered to me. I'll probably start going elsewhere and paying a little bit more for good customer service. read more

Bought a salad from there not too long ago and it was disgusting. The lettuce had an inch of dirt on it, so I picked it out,it made up about 90% of the salad and I just couldn't eat it. There was dirt floating in the dressing...yuck whomever made it obviously had utter disregard for preparing vegetables properly. There are two ways to go: pick up cold items like fresh fruit, salads, sushi, drinks, dessert bars and granola cups from the ready-to-eat coolers or line up for hot items made as you wait on the grills and panini presses. Don't expect anything fancy, but do leave your ideas about "mall food" at the door. This is not the greasy breakfast/lunch place you'd expect to find, but rather a whole foods-focused convenience stop. Tables outside are available for munching at, but you can also avoid the mall atmosphere and take your food to go. read more

Sadly being one of the only fast food alternative places to eat in SSQ, I am left to eat here days I do not pack a lunch. Also the people who work there are NOT friendly. One particular cranky woman who works there is one of the most unfriendly people i have ever met. I had been coming here for years, and after a year away from Halifax, I returned with the delight of knowing that I could start picking breakfast up at Mama Gratti's again. Unfortunately, that dream has been dashed. My hope is not to get personal, but the individual who appears to be managing the place is vile to the point that I no longer want to support this once wonderful place with my business. I've given it the benefit of the doubt every time I've stood in line as she's berated her employees in front of customers for a variety of minor things (muffins not lined up properly, putting toast in at the wrong angle, etc.). I appreciate that these are concerns that may need to be addressed, but not by belittling your staff in front of waiting customers. Today was the final straw. She went up one side of two employees and down the other for not lining eggs up on the grill properly, which unfortunately wasn't an uncommon occurrence. What got me the fact was that when the argument appeared over, the cook turned to me to take my order, and the manager turned her around by the shoulder and said, "I'll get that customer in a minute," and began to berate her some more. The cook insisted on helping the waiting customer, and the manager insisted on scolding her about something new as I waited. I got a sense that morale at this place was down, and I believe I understand why. I hope these employees find somewhere better to use their skills or that the manager finds employment more suitable for her leadership style. This is my very first Yelp review ever and I came on just to specifically comment about the attitude of the owner. I work in downtown so I am a frequenter of Scotia Square Mall and this is not the first time I've received really rude reactions. I got the Mediterranean plate with chicken, salad and rice. I asked for a caesar salad (not an uncommon request - not everyone likes greek salad) and I was met with confused stares (I have done this before every time I get this plate, which is like once a month for a year). The owner then walked over to her employee and no less then seethed "what IS it you want". I then asked for my salad dressing on the side (wasn't going back to work right away and theres nothing worse than soggy lettuce ((which by the end the employee empltied all my rice on top of my salad so there was really no point in any of it anyway, I threw away half of the lettuce))) and again the owner looked at me for clarification and when I repeated (Im a super nice bubbly person so I used all my manners) that I wanted my dressing on the side, the owner pursed her lips, rolled her eyes and continued making a salad for a woman beside me while her employee finished mine, leaving the interaction with just that. Again, DEFINITELY NOT the first time I had gotten a snarky experience from this establishment and I am sick and tired of the attitude. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. read more
