    They sell local foods

Pete's Fine Foods is a really cool grocery store in downtown Halifax. It reminds me a bit of Pino's in Sault Ste Marie. Not as snooty as say Pusateri's in Toronto, lol, but definitely classier than your regular Loblaws or Sobeys. They have a lot of British products. I loved all the British chocolates and candies. They also had British chips, er I mean, "crisps," haha. Their baked goods looked delicious, most were a bit pricey, but their donuts were very reasonable at only $1.50 each. There's also a Sushi Nami counter inside. It's big, brightly lit, and clean inside. I enjoyed poking around this grocery store while I was in Halifax. They had lots of products that I have not seen back home in Ottawa.

Grocery shopping is one of my favourite activities of life in general. I actually should've entered it into my Yelp profile. That's just the way I roll. So to live just a 7 minute walk away from Pete's Frootique, you can imagine why this is a more than ideal situation. Pete's Frootique has the habit of washing me into a soothed and languid state of mind. Walking through the spaces of fresh produce and specialty products is enough to add a little extra sheen to my grocery bag. With an obvious focus on healthy living and eco friendly, products are selective, organic and sometimes a bit more pricey. If you buy in bulk, this may not be the best bang for your buck. But with a consistent stock of fresh, quality goods, shopping at Pete's is a win-win. You can find lots of specialty sauces, pastes, juices, cooking ingredients, etc that you wouldn't get at other grocery stores. Its not exclusively organic or "healthy" brands, but the store is selective in what they bring in. (Eg- Still offer Regular Kraft Peanut Butter, but they only carry the small containers and not the lower calorie version.) There are lots of extras around the store too. The sweets bar in the center is dream-worthy. Fresh, quality cut meats and all the cheese you could ever dream of hold the gateway to my own sister's heart. Lots of delicious (smelling) soaps, beauty product and eco friendly focus lie at the back of the store for browsing. Although the real kicker is the Smoothie / Sandwich / Salad Bars that are beside the store exit. Boys oh boys, is that ever a treat. Fresh, real fruit/veggie smoothies, gelato delights, design-your-own salads, and yummy sandwich options make it hard to pass up. And its all quite cost efficient. Pete's definitely has an emphasis on fresh foods and quality living. A great place for scrumptious, healthy finds.

I love me some small upscale grocery. One of the places I miss from from home town (Tacoma WA) is a place called "The Metropolitan Market". Upscale but not so upscale you'd be afraid to walk in wearing your flip flops after a nice long walk in the neighborhood. This is exactly how I feel about Pete's. Upscale but not so upscale you'd have to donate a kidney just to buy some fruit and a few scoops of gelato. I can't shop here everyday but it's a nice change of pace from the larger grocery chains. Some of the finer points about Pete's: *The homemade fudge smack in the middle of the market. I've only tried it once (getting a few small samples of different flavors) and I loved it. It's nice that they make it right there in the store (so you can stand there and drool on the glass if you'd like - not that I know anything about that). *The sushi bar....HELLO fresh made sushi. I've never eaten it (not paleo friendly) but anyplace that makes fresh sushi gets a little extra love from me. *Upstairs seating...Nothing beats putting a delicious meal together then sitting upstairs and watching the people outside or below in the market. Very few times I've seen it so full that there wasn't any seating available. * Salad Bar! Probably the best around the area (and maybe the only one in the area for that matter). For $7 you can get a small salad with all the fixins you like. They are pretty generous size portions. *Breakfast options: I've gone in early in the morning and ordered a 3 egg omelet for $7 that I found really tasty. It came with toast but since I don't eat bread/grains very often (again Paleo) I chose to go without but am pretty impressed that you could get a pretty good sized breakfast for cheap. *Gelato...yhea I don't really need to say too much about that. It's good....really good. I could go on and on and on and on... Delicatessen +++ Cheese +++ Olive bar ++++++++++++++++++ And if you like to save a few coins my favorite thing about Pete's is the clearance shelf towards the back (near the bananas). I'm always looking for a good deal on veggies that I will eat that day or some organic garlic marked way down. I won't lie - I've been known to go into Pete's just to check out the clearance shelf and most times I'm not disappointed (and no I don't darn my own socks...not yet anyways).

This is my review for the Gluten Free Eatery: Another place I had wanted to try out ever since I moved here almost 3 years ago. Honestly, I was a bit scared since there stuff is not marked whether it is vegan or not. However, if you asked the staff they are super knowledgeable on what is and what isn't. There soups are normally vegan and they offer a salad wrap that is vegan. On top of that they offer a plant milk for drinks, as well as having a bottle of agave for sweetening next to the cash area. They have lots of baked goods as well, many of which are vegan. Cupcakes and muffins are vegan if they have a brown wrapper, white means not vegan. The nanaimo squares and a brownie with peanut butter frosting is also vegan. They also have date balls and chocolate bark that is vegan. And also carry O'Dell's oatcakes that are vegan. I had a soup and wrap today and it was extremely tasty and my friend bought me a cupcake and seriously, I can't believe it's gluten free! Simply amazing!! Great service and lots of options. Definitely a new favourite spot.

If I had unlimited money, I would do all of my grocery shopping at Pete's. I love their fruit and veggie section - it's always well stocked, even of the more unique produce that you may not find elsewhere. If you can't find something elsewhere, you'll probably find it at Pete's! The real gem at Pete's though is their imports section. Like British candy, cookies, tea or soda? They've probably got it. Especially at Christmas time - Pete's has the best stock of British Christmas food. Personally I'm always suckered in by Sno Balls - mmmmmm. If you have dietary restrictions, Pete's also has a great selection of gluten- and dairy-free food. I haven't looked at it extensively, but I have friends who certainly appreciate the stock. They also have a lot of natural and ethically sourced personal care products - shampoo, conditioner, body care, even some makeup. I try to buy all of my cleaning products (whether home or body) cruelty-free, so this is a great resource for that. It's definitely a bit overpriced, but because they do bring in imports and have such a wide variety of products I don't mind splurging every once in a while.

Pete's Gluten-Free Eatery located inside Pete's Frootique on Dresden Row is a great little alternative to gluten sensitive people. With great sandwich's, numerous tea, delicious coffee and a friendly staff, It's a nice little cafe-esque eatery to take a break from browsing/shopping in the Dresden Row Market. 5/5 stars

I'm first going to say that I was quite disappointed when I found out this wasn't an emporium for the gays. I truly thought that the 'fruit' pun in the name was being directed at gay men. Boy was I sad when I found out it wasn't. Still, I brushed my shoulders off and got over it. I made a list about Pete's Frootique that I would like to share with you: - Very strange entrance, entering directly into the fruits. - LOTS of fruits and veggies. - Glorified grocery store? - Dessert section - YUM! - Some canned goods, oh and pre-made packed risotto. - Sweet, cheaper milk. - Wait a second, there's an upstairs with a little cafe? - And there's a cookie corner! - I can smell the fish section. - They've got a juice bar and ready-to-go meals with a cute little dining area. So, I was mostly pleased with my experience... even after I found out it wasn't a drag queen paradise.

My favorite thing about this Pete's is the salad and sandwich shop. I especially like to get the fully loaded salads. They have so many toppings, mostly healthy, that you can get more than your recommended servings of fruit and vegetables. The trade off, of course, is that you will pay through your nose for it. Not a budget lunch, especially if you'd like to add a meat portion to the salad. The rest of the store is great as well with a lot of hard to find items and plenty of high quality produce, much of it organic. All priced accordingly of course.

The healthy food grocery store in Halifax. I love the gluten free cafe upstairs! Great sandwiches and soups. Smoothie bar, meals to go, salad bar, etc. I come here everytime I'm in town. I recommend it! :)

I love this grocery store! (stands up) Hello, my name is Courtney, and i'm addicted to Pete's Frootique. (sits) Although the pricing at 'Pete's' can be a little (or a lot) outrageous, you just have to search for the bargains. For example, in late spring/early summer Pete's repeatedly had pints of driscoll's raspberry's on sale: 4 containers for $5! I generally find the produce (especially veggies) at Pete's to be pretty reasonably priced too. Quite a wide selection of organics too. The best part about Pete's is the wide range of produce they carry from around the world: Daikon, Kumquats, Japanese Eggplant, you name it~ Pete's has it! The really expensive parts of the store (in case you wanted to avoid them) are the body/natural living section as well as the deli. All in all, I highly recommend Pete's! Everything is great here! Salad bar, smoothies- everything!

Pete Luckett is a greengrocer with a mission: to provide his customers with the freshest fruit and vegetables this side of a roadside farm stand. There's a bit of a premium for this freshness and quality, of course, but in many cases, it's worth it. There's always something exotic in the produce section at Pete's - from Mangosteen to Persimmons, and there's generally someone knowledgeable nearby who can explain how to prepare and eat the most unusual things - if Pete himself isn't already explaining it to the customer ahead of you. The shop also has a large international grocery section, and specializes in British imports, including candy and snacks from the UK. There's a butcher, a seafood counter, a cheese and deli-meat counter and prepared foods with lots of delicious salads and snacks for takeout. Perhaps best of all: the salad bar, where you can choose your own ingredients from the vast array before you - at which point, the counter staff will whip it all up into a little Chinese takeaway carton for you, so you can either enjoy it upstairs, at a cosy table overlooking the street...or back at work. If you want healthy, fresh and delicious, you'll find it at Pete's.

For all of you salad-lovers out there, I highly recommend that you go to Pete's salad bar for a delicious, made-to-order salad from their salad bar. Voted by Halifax Coast readers for Best Salad, Pete's salad bar includes every type of vegetable that you can imagine and a wide assortment of salad fixings including chic peas, kidney beans, trail mix, pasta, raisins and more. Pete's also offers a full assortment of salad dressings, including their own homemade specialty dressings, and provides the option of adding roasted chicken or pork to your salad for a small fee.
