I love that Mama Jean's exists. I shop here regularly now that I'm in the area for a bit. The reason they're getting 4 stars from me is because their produce section is their weak link. Every time I go, there are between 5 and 8 produce types that need to be pulled, tossed to the pigs, and restocked with fresh inventory. They don't have a heavily discounted produce area, which almost all health food stores offer, allowing poorer shoppers to at least have the option of getting vegetables on a budget, they just leave the rotten, shriveled, moldy, damaged produce on the display at full price, until someone (me) tracks down the produce person and brings it to their attention. It's every time. Not just once. Every time. The produce people appear unconcerned, unmotivated, and un-empowered. In this economy, asking people to pay ridiculous prices for produce that should be in the compost bin is just not cool. read more

I love this store is located just a few feet off the highway! Trips to the Branson area always include a stop here. Sometimes I stop on the way home, too! They have a great selection of fresh produce, vitamins, and my favorite Bob's Red Mill products. The staff is always friendly and helpful. read more

Like all the Jean stores (those in Springfield and the original in Ava), this location is great. It's big stand out is the large, relaxed MJ's Deli! I don't do all of my shopping at Mama Jean's, but I do come here for specific items, ingredients, supplements, etc., that are harder to find elsewhere. It's a nice store to have where these items are harder to come by at the regular grocery stores in Springfield. I finally decided to try the deli today and they had a great variety of items. Currently I'm dealing with a lot of food restrictions due to some health problems and I thought Mama Jeans deli would be a good place to try. Unfortunately for me, I was only able to order one item on the menu...the grilled cheese on the kids menu. However, luckily for me, the staff was understanding and more than willing to assist me with my order by looking up ingredients and being very accommodating. I ended up adding spinach to my grilled cheese and got a side of their house made ranch to dip my potato chips in. Everything was very delicious! I just wish I was able to try more on the menu. read more

I am absolutely shocked!!! I was at Mamas Jeans on Campbell. The store was NOT busy by any means. I see an old friend so we stop and talk for a bit. Now we are grown adult women who have both work in Customer service for over 30 years!!! We were to the side of an aisle as not to be in anyone's way. A store employee comes up to us and asks us to move to the deli if we want to have a conversation because they are getting complaints we are blocking customers trying to get through. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER CUSTOMERS EVEN IN VIEW!!!! ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?!?! What is the world coming to?!?! Since the history of grocery stores people are social and have conversations with friends they run into at the store. Well you can believe I left my FULL basket and walked out. Do not recommend the Mama Jean's on W. Sunshine near Campbell. The deli cashier was rude. They had plenty of employees. They like to chit chat then acknowledge a customer. Waited 45 minutes to an hour for just 2 sandwiches. They were not busy. I could understand if they were busy, but 45 minutes for 2 sandwiches. Food might be okay, but their customer service is poor. The location is very convenient for those who live in the more poverty areas of Springfield plus it's right on Campbell. Not the biggest store but it still gets the job done. The only issue I have is that they barely have any ethnic products for black folks or other minorities. Our hair is way different & a lot of those products won't work well for us. If a visitor to Springfield were magically placed in Mama Jean's they would think they had died and gone to eco yuppie Mecca. Then they would step outside to Campbell street and realize they were still in the drive-to-the-mailbox Ozarks. I escaped cashew chicken, Shoji Tabuchi and improper pronunciation of "Lebanon," for greener (in all ways) San Francisco, and last weekend I made the trek back to the 'ole hometown for a wedding. My mom had been raving about Mama Jean's, and now I understand the fuss. I was BEYOND impressed -- this place could easily hold its own among the tried and true health food stores in the Bay Area. They have Kombucha and Amy's frozen fare and Seventh Gen products and Traditional Medicinals Tea and the patchouli Kiss My Face body lotion (been looking for that in SF for months!). They also have a wide array of local products, and are diligent about marking them as such. Heavenly! If you awoke from a long sleep and found yourself inside Mama Jeans for the first time, you'd never guess you were in Springfield. With a vast selection of organic food, locally grown produce and natural skin care products, Mama Jeans feels decidedly like a baby Whole Foods that might be housed in the downtown area of much larger more health conscious cities. If observing a vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, or just about any other specialized diet, this IS your place to shop. It's also your place to shop if you are looking for a more quality, preservative-free eating experience. Yes, as others have indicated, it will cost you a bit more, but I think of it like making an investment in your body and overall health... much like going to the gym. When perusing the wall of dry goods for my staple items, the variety will never cease to delight me and inspire more creative cooking endeavors. To name a few, they have black Thai rice, red lentils, flax seed, dozens of flour varieties, and an innumerable selection of spices. If you're looking for a specific or exotic spice or grain for a recipe, I can almost guarantee that Mama Jeans will have it. They also have a professional at the counter who will not only perform the standard task of helping you find what you're looking for, but will also make recommendations and give specific details and uses for their goods. Mama Jeans has a small cafe inside with daily specials, and signature sandwiches. Rock the Casbah, and the Tomato & Mozzarella with a balsamic glaze are among my personal favorites. They also do a homemade soup daily, and usually a couple of other incredible side dishes... all of which can be purchased by the pound. For the beer and wine enthusiasts, I'll mention that Mama Jeans carries a modest but nice selection of wine and micro brews. This is actually the first retail setting that I have EVER been to, that does not waste shelf real estate on bottom of the barrel corporate lagers of the light variety. Here, you will find nothing but locally produced ales, some imports, and seasonals from micro and craft breweries around the country. The brewer and beer snob in me swoons a little at this fact. I'll be the first to admit that I didn't go to Mama Jeans for a long time because I was fearful of becoming dread wearing, unclean granola. After setting my reservations aside and finally passing through the threshold of Mama Jeans, I remarked on how normal all the people shopping there actually were. The staff was equally welcoming and after accepting the slightly higher prices as a reflection and natural result of a better product, I've been happily shopping Mama Jeans ever since. Thank you god! Springfield has a place for finicky Gluten Free shoppers! And, not only do they have one for my shopping convenience, but they have three locations (thanks Jay J.): easy Republic, east Sunshine, and North Campbell. This store has a wide selection of everything you might need. Everything from GF pasta and bread, yeast free bread, organic veggies, GF and organic desserts; all wonderful for your body and taste buds. It may hurt your wallet a bit, but otherwise, this place will help anyone attempting to eat clean. I personally love their non-dairy cheese selection, which includes several vegan options, almond, and goat. Everything from cheddar, mozzarella, and even feta. My favorite pasta, Quinoa pasta, is sold here as well. There is a wonderful selection with many different styles available. Nestled nearby is the organic blends of pasta and pizza sauce to perfectly accompany your delectable concoction for you pasta/Italian lovers. My second favorite spot in the store is the dried section where you can bag yourself all kinds of goodies to include whole oats, chocolate covered almonds, dried mango, and even coconut. Bad experience. Several girls were visiting when I went to check out. Finally, they decided to ring up my groceries. I purchased bananas off the quick sale rack. The clerk questioned and doubted they were quick sale because they "looked so good." She then had me wait while she went to verify the price. There is absolutely no reason to question customers who are spending so much more to shop there! There is a huge difference in customer service between this store and stores like Price Cutter where employees are friendly and helpful. Also, produce was very limited. I have to say I did enjoy my shopping experiences here. However, there were quite a few things that did bother me. First of all, no one greeted me when I walked in. I have been there about three times and no one said anything at all. There was only ONE time an associate greeted me while I was shopping. None of the associates at this store seem very friendly. I don't feel welcomed here. I may have to shop at another location. The selection was pretty cool, though. The prices were not. The fresh food has left to be desired as well. Most of the time the fruit either has mold on them or they are pretty bruised. Not very appetizing... BUT everything else from the organic honey and other products are top notch! The place itself is pretty clean but I wish the staff would engage more with the customers. I have been in retail for a LONG time so I get it. I get that sometimes you just have bad days. But at least attempt to say hello. ACKNOWLEDGE that I am there. I find that the place has a very uninviting atmosphere. When you go up to a certain counter or area there is NO ONE there to help you. Absolutely NO ONE! The associates kind of wander around and socialize with each other. I just feel completely ignored. I don't know if it is JUST this location since I have not been to the other ones but this is kind of ridiculous... PLEASE have your associates be more polite to the customers. There are very few grocery stores I look forward to smelling upon entering, and Mama Jean's is at the top of the list. They specialize in selling organic and healthy options in both food and in other measures. For example, they sell organic essential oils and soaps that are made locally, and they have a vast array of scents that are available for purchase at reasonable prices. Compared to what you might pay at a conventional grocery store, they are a tad pricy, but it's worth every penny. You know you are getting clean, organic (mostly), usually locally sourced produce, meats and veggies. They also have snack foods available in bulk (like trail mixes, granolas, nuts, etc). If you are into organic and holistic foods, then Mama Jean's is definitely the place to visit. Remember, while the FDA does have a "Certified Organic" standard and label, many of the foods they (the FDA) certify still may contain chemicals that the FDA does not consider to be harmful. If you purchase something locally made, you can seek the source and confirm whether or not the products are indeed 100% organic. If Mama Jean's says it is, I would put my money on it. Give them a try. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, and they really do have a wide selection of snacks, foods and other products that are worth looking around for. read more

I sigh a breath of relief when I walk into Mama Jeans. I know that I have just walked into a place I can relax, take a minute to find what I need and if I need help the friendly staff is on top of it. I do not use any big pharma so I rely heavily on Mama Jeans for herbal and alternative remedies and ingredients. Plus I can grab one of the best paninis around while I am there. They also offer $5 community classes in a range of topics as well as free classes at times. It is truly a blessing to have such a great store in my neighborhood! read more

While I'm rating natural foods stores, might as well rate Mama Jeans. Unfortunately, for Mama Jeans, they have a good thing going. But if you frequent Mama Jeans enough, you'll find products with GMO's after already having been told by store employees that "everything in the store SHOULD BE non-GMO" if I have to ask, it has GMO's. MO is a no label state. If every ingredient on the list for whatever food product is labeled, in parenthesis, ex.: (non-GMO) is next to the ingredient, then it truly might be a non-GMO product. MaMa Jean's is great, and they have a wonderful selection. However their prices are not great. I can find most of the items much cheaper online or at Fox Farm Whole Foods 60 miles away in Joplin, MO, sans pretentiousness. Don't get me wrong - I like MaMa Jean's and I do shop there. I just find a lot of the items vastly overpriced and I happen to be extremely focused on getting the most for my money rather than convenience or cool factor so three stars is as good as it gets. read more

When it comes to natural foods and supplements in Springfield, MaMa Jean's is the place. They have a wide selection, helpful staff, and competitive prices. I've shopped the Republic store a few times, but mostly go to the one on South Campbell as some time back I noticed a few of the prices being a bit better there. Whether that's still the case, I don't know. Another reviewer posted that there was a store in Joplin with better prices. That may be, but once you add the cost of a 120-mile round trip, I suspect that advantage will probably go away. And can you get stuff online for cheaper? Probably. But the times I've checked online prices, they haven't been THAT much cheaper, and it's far quicker and more convenient to just go to MMJ's & get what I need. I will say this: The produce seems expensive enough that I don't buy very much of it there. It's organic, which is great, but you have to weigh the benefit and the cost. Sometimes, when I really need or want organic, I will buy there. Be sure to check out their excellent stock of bulk items! And you also need to try their fresh-ground almond butter. I moved from Los Angeles to Springfield in 2001, when the produce folks at grocery stores and even vendors at the farmers' market literally had no clue what I was talking about when I asked if they had arugula. Things have changed dramatically since then, fortunately, thanks in large part to MaMa Jean's, which opened a year later. Springfield does not have a Whole Foods Market, which is fine by me. MJ, over time, has come to fill that niche, although of course not with the same level of variety in produce and fresh meats and seafoods. Nevertheless, the store makes a point of trying to bring in virtually anything a customer asks for, one of the awesome benefits of a locally owned 'whole foods' store that wants to be successful. MaMa Jean's is really the only act in town, other than the very small Homegrown Foods. Another plus is that the store on Campbell is very well-staffed, and the workers are cool, friendly, and knowledgeable. I'd love to see more ready-made deli choices (it seems they offer fewer items than they did a year or two ago), but I primarily shop there for the local produce when I can't make it to the far-mar, the good vitamin/supplement selection, and the remarkable variety of unique local (e.g., Date Lady date syrup) and imported products (Maille Dijon mustard, anyone?!). Keep it up, MaMa Jean. You have a customer for life! read more
