I made a last-minute reservation here for a group of four because other restaurants that popped up when I typed "Japanese restaurant Surry Hills" were booked.
The place is small, but bigger than it looks considering it has an upstairs and a downstairs. We were seated downstairs and the entire vibe is hipster, as expected in Surry Hills, and decorated with red lights everywhere including the glass underneath the table tops.
The menu was interesting, and I tried the fish popcorn, Moreton Bay bug, and the Gooey. All of these items were delicious and made fairly quickly too.
The place also boasts a decent sake menu, and they are nice about outlining what flavors to expect with each one as well as how that specific sake can be served (cold, room temp, warm).
The only thing I could spot as a room for improvement is I wish one of the staff (whoever was responsible for our table) could have paid a bit more attention in terms of assessing when we wanted to order. We waited for a while after getting our water, and I had to flag a guy down that was behind the bar. Friendly service, don't get me wrong, but it seemed like there was no specific person assigned to our table seeing as how every interaction we had with a staff member was a different person. read more
