Oh wow, I can't believe it's been this long since I was first at Mamatsu! TL;DR: It's still great. The dan dan noodles had a great peanut flavour, with some chili oil heat, and it was a fantastic deal at $11 for the bowl! My wife's coconut mango chicken ($13) had a lovely sauce with the smooth and rich coconut milk and the sweet mango, and tender pieces of chicken. Chicken lettuce wraps ($10) were a fun and filling app, with pops of crunch from the carrot and and a lightly salty and savoury sauce. read more

We tried Mamatsu for the first time and had an excellent meal. All the dishes were fresh and tasty, and the menu has many great choices. Service is friendly and fast. Seating is comfortable and there is lots of space between tables. Definitely will return to try some of the other dishes. read more

Very surprising to find this really tasty restaurant in New Glasgow! Will definitely come back - they don't have a huge menu, but that's because they make each thing with care. I had green tofu curry and it came with red and green peppers - pretty good- but my lunchmate had the best pad thai i've ever tasted. read more

We were on the road to North Sydney and really craving some pad Thai. It was ready just as we were pulling in front of the restaurant. Piping hot, fresh, huge portions for an excellent price... couldn't recommend it more! The don don noodles and pad Thai were both delicious! I used to live in Beijing and the food at Mamatsu reminds me of China. Savoury sauce, vegetables cooked just enough to still be slightly crunchy. We tried different plates and hit no bad dishes. I will be going back soon. read more

More than a year has passed since my last review, so I think I check in on this business is due. I still love coming here when I'm visiting NG, even though my visits are sparse and stretched out over the calendar. I visited on a weeknight before the kitchen closed at 7PM (maybe they'll extend to 8PM or 9PM sometime in the future?) and had a delicious dish of the evolution noodles. These are really unique no-carb noodles straight from China that I've yet to experience at another restaurant anywhere I've been. The dish is flavourful, colourful, and absolutely delicious. I few other changes: the menu has expanded slightly, so there are a few more options. They now sell their hot chilli sauce which is made in-house (pick some up, you won't be disappointed) And mostly, all the things I love are the same! The service, the open kitchen and a brief chat with the staff remind me that this is a great addition to NG. read more

So I think it's absolutely fantastic New Glasgow is opening up a little bit and welcoming different cuisines, Mamatsu is a much needed addition to this little town. The decor is neat, modern and sleek but not enough that you need to be dressed up to go. You can see the chef preparing all the meals, shes apparently straight from China and doesn't speak English too well. I ordered a Kung Pao chicken and my brother ordered a red Thai curry, the guy who took our orders was polite and friendly, however it was just takeout so I can't exactly judge how great the service was. There was sriracha on the side of the area the chef was in, which is great because you never see that in New Glasgow and you totally should at EVERY restaurant. They gave us a pretty generous portion of food but I'd say mine was just ok. I asked for it really spicy and it was far from it, the sauce was also a little bit on the bland side and didn't have that kick you get from such a dish, there were lots of fresh veggies and they didn't skimp on the chicken. Apparently it is healthy so that's great. My brother's red curry wasn't red it was a pale colour, he let me have a bite of it and it just tasted like coconut milk with no curry in it, the colour kind of confirmed this for me. The curries I'm used to have a sweet, sour, spicy coconut flavor but this one certainly lacked it. I'd like to come back and try some more dishes, but as of this one visit I was not impressed. The little service I received and decor were a 5 however the food wasn't too great. I do think it's wonderful this place is introducing New Glasgowians to new exotic flavors though. read more

This restaurant is awesome. I'm from New Glasgow but now live in Vancouver and this is by far one of the best Asian restaurants I've been too. The Dan Dan noodles are amazing I haven't been able to find anywheres else that make them this good. The dumplings are also to die for but are hard to get they sell out fast so the best time to get them are around lunch. The evolution noodles are good except I find there's way too many carrots in the dish but that's just my opinion. The green curry is really good and my friends have said the cashew chicken and firecracker pork are also good. If you like coconut water they have been selling a really good kind from Thailand not harsh tasting at all. If your in the mood for some authentic Asian fusion food I highly recommend mamatsu! read more

What a delightful surprise. We were really happy with the menu choices and liked what we got which was firecracker tofu and green curry tofu. The fact that they can make any entree vegetarian by subbing tofu is a blessing for those who want to stick to plant based dishes. Since we had a dog and there's no outdoor seating we got takeout. The food was well packaged and piping hot and fresh. Would definitely recommend a stop. read more

I am generally very reluctant to change my reviews especially if it's for the worst, but unfortunately after a few more visits here I felt it was necessary. I should start by saying that the food here is still excellent, it's well made, well priced and the portion sizes are great. However, the reason for this update is expanding on my biggest issue from my previous review: the service. I had hoped the problems I experienced in my earlier visit were an isolated incident, but here we are, 8 months and half a dozen more visits later, and it appears little has changed. Other than one time two of us went in the middle of the afternoon and were one of only 2 parties, it has always taken quite a long time to get our food. Despite it being a somewhat small venue (~50 people at capacity maybe), their current staff at any given time seems to consist of 1 server and 1 chef, and it shows. They aren't doing anything wrong, but when it's busy it just seems like there's always too much going on for them to keep up. On top of that, despite the fact that everyone seems to rave for the dumplings, I have still yet to try them, as every single time I've been there they have been out. I do still really like this place, but until they can work on making it run a little smoother I think I might stick with take-out. read more

What a find! Was really surprised to find this place. In small town Nova Scotia of all places. The dumplings, looked like a cross between a siu long bau and your regular pan fried chinese dumplings, were great - hand made wrappers, cooked to perfection crunchy bottom and yummy. We had three orders. I had the dandan noodles and it was very good. I have not seen dandan noodles on a menu ever, at least not out of the maor centers in Canada, and was it surprised to see it in New Glasgow. Only wish is that they had a ramen noodle noodle with char siu. Service was excellent and friendly. I hope they open up in Halifax. After going here you realize there is a noodle void in Halifax. May have to come to New Glasgow more often. Per capita, New Glasgow may have the best quality restaurants in Canada. read more

Love this restaurant. Their pork dumplings are an amazing start to your meal, and I almost always go with the Dan Dan noodles (unless their special of the day sounds enticing). Hubby always has the red chicken curry, which is a a yummy coconut-milky plate of goodness. I'm just disappointed that they've been closed for three months this year. read more

My daughter gave me a taste of the Evolution Noodles, and I will probably order them next time. I went to this restaurant, hoping for sushi, as when I googled sushi in NG this was the only place that popped up. My initial disappointment quickly changed when I say that there were lots of things on the menu that I love. I ordered the Green Curry to go, after speaking the the waitress about the spiciness of the dish, I ordered it to be extra extra spicy and I like it spicy and she said that for her it was a bit mild. After getting the order, the spiciness was just about perfect, and the curry was delicious. My food was ready in a very timely manner, I was told it would be a 20 min wait and I only waited for maybe 15 minutes. The reason I didn't give this place 5 stars, is because they serve (at least when ordered to go) the rice and curry together and I prefer to mix the rice and curry myself. I am definitely looking forward to eating there again when in New Glasgow. It is nice to know that I have another option besides pizza to order when visiting home. (Although I love PC pizza and have eaten all of it more than few times this trip) read more

I ordered the Kung Pao chicken, i made it 3/4 of the way though the meal before finding plastic/glass. The waiter/cook past it off as rock sugar or rock salt. i must of found the 3-4 grains the cook put in my dish. No discount for leaving with a bloody tease and little cuts in your mouth. read more
