My parents built a cabin in Old Mammoth in 1966. Now that I am retired, I spend about 50% of my time here. I have seen a lot of changes over the past 60 years...some good and some bad. The population back in the late 60s was 525 and now has grown to over 7,000. Mammoth Lakes is a beautiful mountain community with unlimited outdoor activities. In my opinion, there is too much development with construction of high end homes in areas that were once great places to hike and camp. Pine Cliff is an example which is now a high end subdivision. An increase in development comes with an increase in government and taxes. More people means more traffic and pedestrian activity. E-bikes are becoming a problem as in every other American city. All of this aside, Mammoth Lakes and the surrounding area is a great vacation spot with something for everyone. Everyone needs to at least visit the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mtns in their lifetime. read more

I thought snow is something I'm not gonna missed but hey, at least I'm not experiencing -50 degrees weather here compared to freezing Edmonton. I'm on my first day but I definitely fell in love. I'm definitely not a fan of big cities like Los Angeles but due to my entire family living in LA, I'm sticking around. It's a mountain town, very pretty with the snows. Many people come over here for ski, but the town is not overly crowded. Restaurants always have seats. During our week here in late March, it snowed for consecutive 3 days, we finally get one sunny day after all the snow! It's so beautiful. Highly recommend to take the scenic ride to the summit, it totally worth the money. There are also two free hot springs spots nearby, be sure to bring your bathing suit. In march, most of the lake are not accessible by car or hike due to all the snow, only one lake you could drive to, convict lake. It just located near the hilltop hot spring. I guess we need to come back if we want to see all the lakes here. read more

I'm done with Mammoth. I have been going since I was a toddler, 50 plus years. The attitude around the town is not good. The local workers look at you and treat you like you are an inconvenience, the huffing and puffing and eye rolling when you ask for ketchup, help with something, or a glass of water is a big turn off. A town full of 20 somethings in the service industry figuring out how to pay the rent until the next ski season. What they don't understand is that without tourists, they don't have jobs. The liberals living there are worried about our status in the world, meanwhile they treat the many Europeans that visit there with disdain. It isn't just one establishment, after this past week, I am disgusted. Mammoth won't suffer from lack of my dollars, but they won't get any more of them. read more

If you haven't been, your totally missing out. Winter was always a must for us here. Ski season and everyone is all making plans on when to visit. But this visit was a first time visiting during the summer. And let me say, it is totally totally worth it. About five hours or so from LA, the drive is beautiful and easy along the 14 and 395. Lots of cute places to stop off along the way as well as some small quaint town to have lunch and walk around. Not big but it worth a wander. We stayed right off chair lift 7 which is perfect during the winter months as it's basically ski in and ski out. But during the summer, the mountains is perfect for all the summer activities. The lakes were all so beautiful and pristine. Heads up, get there early as parking does get busy even parking along the road gets full. It was pretty busy when we arrived in the afternoon. There's campsite near the lakes as well for the outdoorsy type. Plenty of hiking trails with million dollar views. Pictures doesn't do it justice. The clam and serene feeling just comes out of you sitting along the rocks and just enjoying the view of the lakes and mountains. Pictures perfect all the way. The lakes are all pretty much near each other. I believe the trails can actually take you from lakes to lakes depending on which one. Not 100 percent sure but it looked like it would from the top. The village is also a cool stop to check out. We were minutes in the car from it. It was also walking distances well. It happened to reggae weekend with a concert. I believe during the summer months, each weekend host a different concert or so on. The village was pretty busy with vendors selling trinkets, food, and drinks. Heads up, restaurant was pretty busy during the weekend. Mammoth, regardless on when you visit, it's always a magical place. Nature at its best. read more

Came here for some exploration and a little getaway from the heat. Wow, love it here the weather in low to mid 70's. During the night weather is about 46 degrees, your body gets used it. And there is still snow! Hard and dirty but enough for my kiddos to be amazed that 5 hours away from home where is extremely hot we can still find snow, so they made a snowman. The park is full of trails, hikes, horse back riding, mountain bike riding, gondolas, shopped, little visiting center, tours, and fishing in beautiful lakes. We didn't have time to kayak or paddle board. But that is something to do. If you love the outdoors as much as I do, this is the place to come. We will definitely have to come during winter and explore it during the winter season. Regardless summer, or winter there is always something to do. read more

I visited for the first time in July 2020. I am now a fan of the area and can't believe that I waited so long to get up here. Mammoth is a beautiful area, with so many things to see and do. There are many lakes, restaurants, there is skiing, hiking, camping, and Devil's Postpile national monument. Not too far away is Convict Lake, Mono Lake Tufas, Bishop, Bodie, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest - Inyo National Forest, etc. I camped at high sierra and was able to visit many of the nearby attractions. Devil's postpile national monument has many things to see including the postpile formation, rainbow falls, minarete falls, sotcher lake, etc. and if you have a national park pass you get in for free. read more

The city of Mammoth lakes remind me of a want to be South Lake Tahoe. Lodging options are marginal at best. There are some good places to eat. We have Fallen in love with Mammoth. We have only been in the Sumner and have found there to be endless activities to keep one busy. We have rented boats at Convict Lake, paddleboarded around many if their lakes, hiked a bunch of trails, downhill mountain biked, rode dirt bikes, and even checked out some of the natural hot springs. If you like to fish, the fishing is supposed to be great. We have come back several years in a row with several families. read more

This was only my second time to mammoth, my first time actually snowboarding here. The quality of the snow here is great! And what made the trip even better was that t was lightly snowing when I came so the runs were more powdery. I got my lift ticket from skidazzle so it was only 128$ for two days! The first day the runs were a lot more icy since it snowed the second day I was there. It took me a solid day to know what runs to go down and where it spit you out from. The maps on the lifts helped a lot. The runs are also a lot wider compared to the ones at big bear. It get crowded but it isn't so bad if you stay on the runs towards the top. If you go all the way down the mountain the line can get pretty long. I just really liked how my condo was walking distance of a lift so walking to and from wasn't a big deal. read more

I booked an overnight stay through Booking.com and then quickly realized that it was the wrong route to our final destination and was in mountainous terrain for which we didn't have chains. I cancelled within an hour of making the reservation and Booking.com was willing to make an exception and not charge us for the reservation. The Property Manager at Edelweiss was unwilling to make an exception and was rude and unhelpful. She charged full price even though the studio suite we booked was rented again for the date we cancelled. I would never consider this site for lodging due to the extreme rudeness of the manager. read more

Mammoth lake is for the Rich, the famous, and mostly Caucasians. Only a myth! Not TRUE! This is definitely a diverse community. Lots of latinos, Persians, Asians, you name it, it's up here. :-) Every restaurant, market, resort, bars my family and I have been to, we've been treated with the utmost respect and kindness. There's ignorant people all over this country but, there's hell of a lot more kind & respectful people out there. Mammoth is a bit Pricey but, the memories you experience here is worth every penny. read more

My family have been coming to Mammoth Lakes for over twenty years, it has become a family tradition, The scenery is spectacular, we mostly come in summer for the fishing. The last 4 years we have been very disappointed. Lakes take way to long in between stocking. In the last 4 years we only caught two fish. Years back we had to catch and release because we would catch to many. I was there for 7 days recently and did not catch one fish, fishing from 5am til dusk. I don't think my family will be going back to Mammoth for summers, maybe for winter to snowboard. What I'm rating is the fishing and not the town read more

I really love this little town out in the middle of nowhere off the 395. I have visited Mammoth Lakes several times and I've never had a bad trip here. If you're just passing through or looking for a great outdoors experience, Mammoth is a great place to stop. When visiting Tahoe, I'll usually stop here for a night to break up the driving a bit. Otherwise I enjoy visiting Mammoth for gazillion hiking trails and close proximity to Yosemite. If you're traveling from a low elevation area, be wary of altitude sickness which I seemed to have experienced during my last visit. read more

Beautiful Scenery. Amazing place to snow sport. But the people and customer service at the village lodge are atrocious. Absolutely atrocious. I would not send my enemies here let alone my friends. The one redeeming quality is that the supervisor of the village(Jason) was accommodating to all the inconsistencies in our stay. It's unfortunate that the rest of his staff could not follow suit. Mammoth has some of the best snow on the West Coast but the worst attitudes. Do yourself a favor and stay outside of town. Was expecting way more from such a nice place. Disappointed. read more

This is a beautiful town as far as scenery goes. Being outdoors here is delightful. However, this town has a nasty prevailing attitude towards tourists everywhere you go. While you are handing them your hard earned cash they scowling and or chastising you. Two of our kids were screamed out by locals as they were crossing the street at a designated area by people in cars. My family travelled with two other families and every evening we would hash out the experiences we had during the day. Please don't give me the tired "these tourists are annoying...". Two of our families are from Orlando, one family from Cape Cod. Two in our party work for major theme parks and one at a famous coffee shop in downtown Orlando. We know how to treat tourists, even the more difficult which believe me we are not. Seriously, this town is isolated and many of the residents are reliant on the tourism for a livelihood, either directly or indirectly. The pricing has become outrageous since Aspen's KSL took over. Childcare and ski lessons jumped over $100 per day per child since last May of 2017. The quality of the staff, facilities have remained the same. While I love the staff, they are awesome, the new management and pricing structure needs to come down and be more reasonable. At $275 per day for ski lessons and daycare combo, the cost quickly overcomes the cost of a season pass. May as well go with Utah next season where you get to the mountain quicker and prices are way more reasonable, better snow, and more options for lodging and dining. read more

This location caused my wife and I CONSIDERABLE INTESTINAL DISTRESS! My wife is Veg and I am an Omnivore. The only food or drink we consumed in common; before and during our trip was a Napoli Pizza from here. We have a tight knit group of friends who we went to Mammoth with. We arrived a day earlier and had this for dinner. None of our friends, relatives or coworkers had Stomach Flu before or after our trip. This was strictly a food handler hygiene issue or the vegetables were not washed properly. We spent the next 2 day trying not to crap our pants. FUN TRIP! :( read more
