Especially with some snow around the area during the end of November. It was the end of fishing season I believe, so we didn't see anyone fishing here the weekend we went. First come first serve. Ranger came in the morning and we paid our $24 for this prime spot. Non hook up or tent camping. So glad the hubby and I, decided to head out this way at the last minute. The spots aren't as close to the lake, as I'd like them to be but I was able to see the lake from my Sprinter Van window. (My glamping self wants to wake up a few feet from the lake) Trees and bushes can cover the Lake view and sites aren't as close. Twin lakes has day use and camping only sections. Definitely worth a visit or a stay. I love getting away from L.A. and places like this will keep me searching for more ! It gets windy at night so be prepared for winds. At least it was windy for us in September 2019. Just a few tips are to follow the one way signs while driving and expect to come to a quiet campground. Not much noise at night at all and toilets are flushable, not porter potties. If you have a camper van or RV, then no need to worry. Keep dogs on a leash and enjoy! read more

Breathtaking even if the water is a little low at this time. If you are coming into town keep going down Main Street and you will eventually end up in all the wilderness. This is one of the first major stops. Go slow and if you see cards stopped, just pull over, even if you aren't sure where you are because chances are you just found the Twin Lakes. read more

This area is so beautiful! It's apparently a great place to fish(we didn't catch any) there is uan upper and lower lake. Lots of places to set up chairs and just fish from shore. Cute bridge that takes you across the lake to get to the other side for other fishing spots. The cabins here have great balcony's for dogs - other then that I wouldn't recommend bringing your dogs. We brought our two dogs and there is fishing line and hooks EVERYWHERE we found 3 hooks in upper lake just on the shore and 5 just in one fishing spot in lower. It's frustrating because it's a great place for dogs and they could definitely enjoy swimming but I'm surprised we didn't end up with a ER vet visit. Make sure to wear water shoes of some sort for the same reason! read more

It is a pretty spot as everyone has said. But what is going on with the water? It's choked with seaweed and algae. As a kayaker, I was so close to the water and could see everything growing above, and below, the water. At one point I tested to see how deep the growth was and it was longer than my oar. I saw lots or tangled fishing line, and the weirdest thing ever, baby pine trees growing from the top of the weeds at the surface. My husband was here pre-Covid and was shocked at the change in the water. You can see the bloom in the water in this photo. Kinda gross. Disappointing for sure. read more

This is definitely an underrated spot as far as lakes in the Sierra Nevada go. My boyfriend showed me this spot during a short 3-day vacation/road trip, and we ended up bringing a camper right up to the water's edge. It was absolutely gorgeous! We were super fortunate to have found the spot that we had, although it was a bit busy since it was labor day. Still a great time! On busy holidays, it's nice knowing that there are small, hidden gems like these while Tahoe and Yosemite get backed up with crazy traffic; we had almost no issues coming up here. The cool part is, it's close to a bunch of neat spots like Bodie and Mammoth. You could make a pretty neat weekend by including Twin Lakes as a destination in your vacation plans. The fishing is good, my boyfriend didn't have a lot of luck, but a family nearby had caught a few trout! Plenty of space along the shoreline to cast your line. I can't wait to come back, this place is beautiful. read more

Great camping, awesome wildlife with the birds, squirrels, bears, deer!!! The camp hosts are wonderful! We love Ronnie and a new couple, Ed and Joyce, are amazing!! This was worth visiting and I would recommend it if anyone is in the area looking for a picture perfect place to stop by. Tons of people also fishing in the lake which looked like fun. Very peaceful. Really cool campground hosts. Adorable husband and wife team. We arrived after dark and circled the campgrounds indecisive as to which site to pick because some of the ones by the water looked a bit damp on the ground. They recommended campsite 37 of the ones available. It was the closest to the waterfall and lake as we could get. We couldn't see the waterfall but it was lovely to hear its roar while we slept. The stars are amazingly bright here at night due to the lack of light pollution. It's a gorgeous sight to behold. The milky way dances in its stream over you. What a shame to think that the exact same stars are always overhead but you don't get to view them the same way due to the bright lights of city life. They don't have many trails for hikers in the winter. But even if you are looking at the beauty from the rest stop. It is worth it. This place is so beautiful. The campsites are awesome and you can get them right on the lake. I did not come here for camping but did come here for the paved bike trail that starts in town and goes all the way to the top. I of course started in the middle because that first climb is really steep and we were towing our dog behind us. He loves coming on rides with us. The paved bike trail weaves through the trees and campsites. It also goes along the lakes and is pretty much uphill and downhill once you get past the first climb. You can ride this trail all the way up to Lake Mary. Gorgeous!! They have a little store to stop in and get a snack or drink and chill by the lake. They also had a guy cleaning the trail off while we were riding. I love that they take such good care of the trails here in Mammoth. read more

We stayed here for four days during the 4th of July week. This place is beautiful!!! We stayed at site 011 in our pop-up camper. WARNING- make sure that this is the correct Twin Lakes campground....because there are two!! We found that out the hard way, this campground is in Inyo, CA and the other one is in Bridgeport, CA. Pros: The campground is clean, there are bathrooms with running water, it allows pets, located right outside of Mammoth Village (approx. 5 miles), campground staff very helpful, showers are available (for a price!!). The lake is stocked with trout every Thursday!!! The fishing was great, we caught about 15 trout in two hours fishing from our boat. Also there is a general store that has basically everything that you need and most likely forgot to bring, you can rent fishing row boats there as well. Cons: It costs $5 to take a shower at the general store (which is only open from 7am-7pm). The fishing boat rentals are $15 an hour and there is no daily rental. You can only have ONE vehicle for free, any additional vehicle is $5 a day (hint: park your extra car in the "day use" area and just leave it there, no fee!). It costs a dollar to use the water to clean the fish, really? Overall, we had a wonderful time at this campground and I would highly recommend it to anyone!!! read more

I have brought my daughter here to go fishing (shoulda gone swimming instead lol). None the less, there are so few pristine, quiet, beautiful places like this close to a town that you can drive up to, roll out of your vehicle and immediately be at one with nature. Please take time out to go and visit this place. It is well worth your time to hike around it and up into the mountains a bit as well. "Hey, pull over for a second." My friend deftly guides the car onto the shoulder, avoiding a two foot snow embankment. I adjust the knit beanie I had just picked up from a local general store that makes me look like a cartoon black cat and open the door. Leaving the warmth of the car, the sudden drop in temperature is a minor slap in the face. Every breath creates a localized fog situation in front of me. It's March 2013 and the snow at Mammoth is still around, although the imminent onset of spring has melted everything even just 15 minutes down the mountain from where we are. After snapping a few photos with frozen fingers in the dimming sunlight, we hop back in the car to drive only another couple hundred meters before we come upon Tamarack Lodge and its large cabin community. The place is gorgeous. Standing on the east bank of the lakes with Mammoth Mtn. itself to the west, a deep blue-purple shadow from the mountain engulfs everything around us. Warm lights glowing from inside various cabins lend a comforting warmth that is more visual and psychological than physical. We walk across a narrow bridge to the west bank and scare each other by testing how thick the lake ice is below us. Snow drifts from the treeline spread onto the lake's frozen surface making it difficult to tell which areas are soil and which areas hide a frigid (and frankly embarrassing) death by drowning. Sharing this moment with some of my best friends takes me back to my childhood when we would play outside until the sun went down and the dinner bell rang. There are no worries about work, no worries about life. There's only this moment, one filled with laughter, fun and friendship. 5/5 stars. read more

Twin Lakes has a wonderful 5 mile paved road that goes from the parking lot up to the falls and Horseshoe lake. I road my bike up and my sister walked it. We both agreed it was a smooth path up. The scenery is nothing less than gorgeous all around the entire way up. Will definitely go back! read more

There be some bears in these woods.... One of my favorite places to camp is Twin Lakes Campground in Mammoth Lakes, CA. The campground is great & there is so much to do in the town of Mammoth. Twin Lakes Campground is right on Twin Lakes. There is no hook ups, but very clean restrooms & the general store at the campground has clean showers. The campsites are spacious. Great for big families. A lot of campsites have a view of the lake or the Waterfall. The lake has great trout fishing & you can rent a row boat from the general store. There are great hiking trails right off the campground that give you excellent views of the Mammoth area. What I like about Twin Lakes too is it's location. It's a few miles away from the city of Mammoth, so you have that great mountain setting. Up the road is Lake Mary, where you can take your motored boat or rent one too. All of the vicinity of Mammoth has so much to do. Mammoth is not that far away from Mono Lake & Lee Vining, the gateway to Yosemite. You can easily make a day trip Yosemite. We always like to go spend the day at Tenaya Lake. Makes a great day trip. I will say watch out for them bears when camping. They are out in about if you have food left out. They are pretty mild mannered & interesting to watch, but definitely wouldn't want to come in too close proximity of them. read more

When I was a little kid, this is the lake(s) where my family used to spend the most time. Eventually, we began to understand the superiority of Lake George (http://www.yelp.com/biz/lake-george-mammoth-lakes#hrid:Y_-Urx0vjykc092wMJzeyg), but for many years, this is where we did most of our fishing. It's also where I caught my first fish (on the western shore of the northern lake), which was too small, but because of the occasion, my dad let me keep it. I very distinctly remember that evening. My fish was too small to eat, and when we got home, I filled a cereal bowl with water and dropped the dead little fish into it. There it floated, and I spent a long time poking it and feeling its scales and feeling bad for killing it when we weren't going to eat it. I don't remember the exact circumstances, but the next day, I had my dad pull the car over specifically so that I could give the fish a proper burial. (We had pet fish at home, and I knew that every death must be accompanied by a kind of flushing.) I then threw the carcass into Mammoth Creek. I have no idea where the best fishing is, but we usually did all right on the northern lake. The western shoreline can get crowded pretty fast, so if you're not an early bird, you might have to settle for the eastern shoreline, which involves less walking anyway. The water level of the lake(s) can fluctuate, but they can control it somewhat by adjusting the flow of the dam overhead, which empties out of Lake Mamie and forms a waterfall just south of Twin Lakes. They were having a problem with too much algae in the lake(s) at one point; so they lowered the water level so that the algae would surface and, theoretically, be killed by the cold. I don't think this worked. In any case, the lake is pretty shallow, and it's really easy to get your line tangled in the undergrowth. Just west of the lake(s) is a mountain that has really interesting terrain. When I was a kid, I could swear that one of the crannies way up on the mountain was a cave, and I imagined that bears hibernated there. Because of this I was always a little bit scared to stray too far from the shore on the western side of the lake, but a bear can just as easily outrun you in the forest as it can on the shore. And they can swim and climb trees as well. For the record, I have seen bears in Mammoth Lakes, but they were nosing around in the dumpsters in the complex we were staying at in town. They're big and scary and cute and clumsy-looking. read more

What a beautiful area to go for a walk! After two days of skiing it was great to relax and take a nice walk around the Twin Lakes area. It was even more fun to walk ON the lakes! Picking up heavy rocks, trying to crack the ice and doing all sorts of "don't try this at home" stuff was a blast. There are bridges, walking paths, and even wooded/shaded areas to stop for a picnic or just toodle around in. Such a gorgeous area! read more

camped here over the weekend and what a BEAUTIFUL place! i mean, coming to mammoth during the winter is heavenly, but who knew (at least i didn't) how gorgeous it is year round! the campground is pretty big, arriving here at night might get you a bit lost if you dont know the area. we reserved a site towards the end of one trail, near one of the lakes with bathrooms nearby. i have to admit, the whole "roughing it" was a bit scary for me, but honestly it wasnt so bad. the bathrooms are REALLY clean! most of my friends who have gone camping before said that this is like the "5 stars" of bathrooms compared to the other camping spots they've been to. so being my first time actually tent camping, it's good and bad. good because it left me with an awesome camping experience but bad because now i'll expect other experiences to be the same. the lake is beautiful and clean and the entire campground was well kept. we even met the the guy who volunteers his maintenance services there. he was very friendly and he really kept the bathrooms super clean. at each site, there are fire pits, benches and a large bear locker to keep all your foods in and locked away from bears. there are plenty of hiking around the area but be forewarned, the hikes are not easy. the start of the hike we took was an immediate steep incline but it does flatten out a bit and the views are absolutely gorgeous! if you really want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city life but still be close to civilization when needed, this is really a great place to camp. read more

You could stand along the fringes to take a couple of photos, or even dish out your deck chairs and enjoy a good drink by the lake, but renting a boat/kayak from tamarack lodge and rowing it out into the serene lake is highly advisable. If you feel adventurous, row up the lake to the twin falls for a breathtaking view. Take your dog with you on the adventure, this place is pet-friendly. read more

I just stayed at Twin Lakes Campground and it by far one of the best! It is a quiet family campground, nice to see fathers taking their kids fishing. It is just a couple of minutes from mammoth which has plenty of restaurants, if you do not want to cook. 99% of the camp sites offer a great flat spot for a tent and most are large enough for an RV. Plenty of trees and heavily wooded, even after their windstorm that destroyed 90 trees in the campground. Bears were in the campground twice of our four day stay but bothered no one. None of the sites are really close to the lake. I stayed in #61 that offered an OK view, that site lost most of its trees so bring an easy-up for shade. There are high bushes that obscure most of the lake. Take the free bus to horseshoe lake with your bike and ride down the 2 miles or so to twin lakes on the paved off the street bike path. You can ride all the way to downtown and take the bus back up if you do not want to do the hills. Rented a paddle boat at Lake Mary for $30 for 2 hours and did a horseback ride at Convict lake for $60. The camp hosts were very nice. Cons: No showers (showers are at Twin Lakes Store just a short walk away) $5 + $1 if you want an outlet!! They close at 7pm. The Showers are clean but if you actually want to blow dry your hair in the creepy cubby hole with one outlet for everyone needs an upgrade. Restrooms in the campground need to be cleaned more no outlets in the bathroom. No Camp rules posted, such as quiet times or rules on noise such as generators. Come on folks there are people in tents, don't run your generators at night!!! or at 6am which was the case next to me. Pro: Beautiful area, fresh air, not crowded. Plenty of places to hike, bike and fish. Not to mention shop. Von's grocery store just a few minutes away. Great food in Mammoth. Loved the "Moguel" restaurant. Campground quit, no obnoxious drunk people that are loud all hours of the night. Saw Mammoth PD in the campground patrolling. read more

The scenery is so breathtaking (like out of a calendar photo hahaha). My family and I had a picnic and went hiking on the Lake Basin Path. It begins down by the lake and gradually (!) ascends to the waterfall. There are two bridges dividing the lakes and there is also a waterfall between Twin Lakes and Lake Mary. If you drive past the Twin Lakes Loop entrance and past the pack station, you can find parking spaces at the top of the waterfall. You can also rent canoes and kayaks, quite fun :3 going under bridges can be a little tricky xD read more
