My nieces have been…read moregoing here for years to check out their summer books - we have a summer residence in SSP, and Upper Shores is a short car ride (or bike ride) away. Recently, we spent some time here on a rainy day to just read and chill out. First, if you're an avid reader, Upper Shores has a great selection (both in person and online) of books. The library does appear a bit on the small side, but don't let that fool you! In addition, the staff will be happy to order you a book on loan from another library and they're usually there within a day or so. Their loan time on Libby (which you should all download for e-books and audiobooks) is 21 days which is better than my local library at 14 days. The app is also a coinvent way to look up and place a hold on desired books so they can be ready for pickup. As I mentioned, I also spent a wonderful afternoon here with my nieces. We parked ourselves in some comfy chairs and read for a few hours. There is plenty of space to do just that - and I was pleasantly surprised with the free phone charger locker that fast-charged my phone in a matter of minutes. I also know they have a great selection of programs available for kids throughout the summer, too! One thing I will say: it is very difficult to get a library card here. Only tax-paying residents that show proof of address can get a card here. Therefore, my parents are entitled to a card but I (as a member of their household) am not. The same goes for my nieces - even though they are in elementary school, they are not entitled to a card as a member of their parents' household. So I registered my mom for a card and am using her number to take out books. The staff kindly but firmly talked me through this whole process. I understand why, however - there are so many transients in the area, I can see a vacationer borrow books and never give them back. You are entitled to a guest card for 10 dollars if you aren't a taxpayer, however it's only good for four weeks. Regardless, library are important cornerstones of communities, and I am very happy to use / support Upper Shores!

This library is nice as it has a parking lot and there is a baseball field right behind the library. The place is spacious with plenty of nooks to grab a desk and get into a stack of books/newspapers/magazines or the Internet. One can book a room to have a meeting with the library's approval. There are frequent meetings and lectures you can attend monthly. All events are listed online and are posted at the main desk. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. All branches have a wide variety of movies that are either in stock or can be reserved on CDs.

We all bitch and moan about taxes, isn't it great to know there's a tangible community asset provided in return for said monies? We're in some dystopian times, so it's refreshing (even comforting) to be reminded that one of society's great equalizers remains available for all to access. As far as COVID logistics: books can be reserved online and "contactless" pickup can also be scheduled there. As an older millennial, I went hybrid by reserving my book online and once an email informed me it was available, I called and spoke to an actual living, friendly human who proceeded to reserve a 15 minute time slot for my pick up. The librarian assigned me the number "2." To pick up, simply head to the rear of the building where you'll encounter a table under the portico. Here, you'll find your requested book (with your name affixed) next to the number 1, 2, or 3. Its location will correspond with the number provided by either the website or the friendly librarian via telephone during the final step of the reservation process. Upon leaving, a librarian came out and actually thanked ME. This felt a bit strange for a multitude of reasons. Rather than an entitled "hey, I'm a taxpayer," I thanked her in return. After all without free and fair dissemination of knowledge and truth, where would we be? That is something I hope to never find out.

Here's the thing, Since I moved to NJ, both of these Gov't facilities have been pretty easy to work with, fast and the staff friendly.... I KNOW!! Anyway- Mini-Me "misplaced" her Social Security Card and we decided to head to this location at 11:30am, no appointment, no call ahead to see if they were packed, we just walked in, looked around- it was standing room only, no seats it was PACKED!! we took a number and waited- this was gonna be alll dayyy longgg- hours and hours, this is what nightmares are made of- but NO!! a whole 15 minutes passed and our number was up on the LED board and we were being called to the window-- that's right 15 minutes!! I seriously couldn't deal, it was incredible. Mini-Me handed in her paper, ID's and that's it, The Social Security lady behind the bullet proof glass window, told Mini-Me her card would be sent to her in the mail and she would receive it in a week or two-- but no, exactly 3 days... it was in the mail.. again, amazed.

Its a superb day trip--a place unlike any other. You wont find tourists here; or probably any other living soul for miles around. Its just not that well-known enough. Its not an excursion accompanied by a lot of tourist-board support, advertising, or fanfare. There are no audioguides, no pamphlets, no maps. There's also no fees, gates, ticket-stands, trinkets, permits, or clerks. You can just park on the shoulder of the expressway, and mosey right in off the roadside. Its just a tract of deserted woodland. Its a part of New Jersey only a few people ever have reason to explore; its for the imaginative and intrepid. In the course of a year, the site probably only gets a couple photographers, an artist or two, or perhaps an author once in a while. Some 4WD-nuts pass by occasionally. [And this Yelp won't change that--even if I told you about great dining here, this place will always be forlorn and neglected.] Its the location of a vanished Piney town which sprang up in the 1800s around an iron-smelting furnace; and which has now almost completely disappeared from above-ground. Iron? There were iron mines in New Jersey? Not exactly. Its a strange chemical process, organically-occurring, whereby it forms in the swamps and bogs around here. You'll notice all the water is naturally 'tea'-colored. But all the left-behind equipment and abandoned buildings are now, just as if they never were. You might only notice some strange shapes --hummocks, berms--in the terrain and that's about it. This is where your imagination comes to the fore. You're strolling around on top of a village. Chalk one up for NATURE! If it doesn't grab your fancy, then..no matter--just wandering around in the Pine Barrens is in itself, ethereal and stupefying. Take care not to get lost; because the trees have an eerie manner of all looking exactly the same. A few unmindful steps can get you turned around. The Pine Barrens are just a fabulous and unique environment. People love to discredit the Garden State without ever having heard of forests like this. To try to explain: the soil is flat, level, and sandy and without underbrush--covered only with a carpet of pine needles. Thus, with the trees racing up so tall and straight--like columns in a church--and also branching so high; the effect is quite cathedral-like. Sun slants through as if coming through high windows. And its uncannily quiet. Like a big empty room. Just the coolest. Bring boots (its occasionally muddy) and a survival knife *just in case* of feral dogs. I recommend this excursion to all the Yelpers who like to make a fuss over their daring and adventurous, active lifestyles. You're not impressing me with your tour-guide led whitewater rafting adventures. Try exploring the Pine Barrens. .

Zero stars from me. I love our men and women in uniform. They are our everyday heros. Except one…read more A Howell police Sargent by the name of officer John. This man is the most unprofessional and aggressive officer I've ever had the misfortune to deal with. I'm in the middle of filling complaints. With his superior and then internal affairs, because we all know it's not going past the howell police department. Back in Sept of 24 I was assaulted and called 911. He was the officer who responded. Alone. And he completely dismissed any and everything I had to say... he accused me of being the aggressor and I most definitely wasn't. But he refused to hear me out. He cussed in my face, called me a lair, threatened MY freedom then the man drove off and left me standing there with the man who just assaulted me. He said "if I have to come back here, YOU'RE going to jail. " so the other 4 times I was assaulted by the SAME person I didn't call. I was scared I was going to be called a lair and arrested. The 5th time I did call 911. I had no choice, it was really bad. AGAIN, officer John took the call. He was incredibly rude and dismissive, he laughed in my face when I told him that the guy said he was going to blow up my car, he refused to give me his badge number... I told him to leave, he scares me and I'd like to speak to a non bias officer. He refused. He wasn't even going to talk to the man who assaulted me. I had Two witnesses that seen it happen. He didn't get their names or birthdays. And again. He left me with the man who tried to kill me. He randomly drives by my house for no reason, I live on a dead end.... one way in. One way out... he asks people if I still live here.. I've repeatedly told this horrible little man to stay away from me but it has become harassment. I turned in a complaint to the judge with my ppo on my ex..(the assulter) I've talked to the deputy chief about his actions over the phone.... yet he still finds a way to use his authority to scare me. I've completely had it with this guy. This started on September of 24 and hasn't stopped. He pulled my friend over in my car thinking she was me... had absolutely no probabal cause... he was just trying to find a reason to arrest me. They asked her for her license. Saw she wasn't me and told her she could leave..... um. Wait. What!? That's abuse of power, harassment and just plain trickery.... that's not ok. Idk what else to do. How do you fight the dirty cops?? I live a bad area. We need to be able to count on and trust our officers of the law. He's the only cop in my 43 years on this planet that makes my skin crawl because I know he's just out to get me. I am a good person. I work hard I'm a single mom of three I pay my taxes and I do my best to stay in my lane. I'm the one who called 911.. I was in fear of my life for months because of him. He is an awful man/cop and gives the good ones a bad name. I will not stop telling my story until it's been heard. I'm sure when he hears about this review he'll be right over here looking for any reason possible to take me in. The man needs to be demoted to the howell police department janitor. He has no business wearing a bage and disgracing the rest of the good officers out there. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I hope others have the guts to stand up against him. The only reason he scares me is the abuse of power he's so good at. That's not a fair fight.
