It's located near a flagpole with the US flag and the black MIA-POW flag. It's a 2-sided monument, with WW II on one side and Korea, Viet Nam, Grenada, Lebanon, Panama, and the Persian Gulf on the other side. It's dedicated to New Hartford's veterans who served in these conflicts. The WW II side is comprised of three stone panels. The side panels are inscribed with the names of New Hartford's WW II vets. The center panel is higher, and has an American eagle on the top. The center panel lists the names of those killed during the war, and is inscribed with the words: Dedicated to the honor and sacrifice Of our men and women who served our country in World War II Let none forget they gave their all when came the call And faltered not when came the call The other side of the panel remembers the vets in the country's armed conflicts after WW II. There are no names engraved on this side. It has the logos of the armed service branches, including one for the Army National Guard. The inscription varies from that on the other side: Dedicated to the honor and sacrifice of New Hartford's men and women who served their country during times of war, hostility, and peace It's another great example of the way a small town remembers the service and patriotism of its citizens.

I had the opportunity to stop and look at the memorial sculptures that mark this historic event that was created by Lon Pelton. Along side the photos that I took and posted are a few photos I'd like to give credit that hopefully meet copyright and reprint requirements to the Windsor Historical Society and then Windsor Police Officer John Gasparino for the photo which gives a little more insight to the immense size of this event. This site is pretty cool and definitely worth a few minutes of your time if you too enjoy historic sites and roadside oddities. I can imagine the impact of this event on the citizens of Windsor and the surrounding communities at the time. I imagine how the town rushed to get as close as possible to witness this derailment and the clean-up process, I'm sure it's something that anyone that witnessed will never forget. I was a little taken back how Mother Nature has been allowed to reclaim portions of these sculptures and the lack of ground maintenance surrounding it - this is a site that should be preserved in my opinion and would definitely make for a cool field trip for school age children (if field trips are still allowed these days). I for one would make a one time donation in the name of preserving this site...

If you've ever been to the Whistle Stop Café, you might have noticed the "Train Wreck Burger" on…read morethe menu. Ever wonder why? The answer can be found in two sculptures located in the Whistle Stop's parking lot that commemorate a nasty 1975 accident when a flatbed railroad car hauling a load of lumber shifted and the train crashed into an overpass on Palisado Avenue. There are two sculptures here, each with a descriptive plaque. The first statue is near the side entrance to the restaurant. It's an abstract work with railroad track rails and wood ties with various train parts laid out inside the tracks. The second statue includes huge hunks of twisted metal, presumably debris from the smashed overpass. I did a lot of research trying to find an account of this 1975 accident without any success. Nevertheless, it's a very interesting and highly creative pair of attention grabbers at the Whistle Stop.

You don't see that many memorials solely dedicated to the 1898-1902 Spanish-American War, but you…read morewill find this striking monument on a strip of grass in downtown Meriden. I did some research on this monument and learned something about the veterans who fought in the war that won America the lands of Guam, Puerto Rico, and (temporarily) Cuba. World War II soldiers were called "GI Joes", World War One vets were "doughboys", and Spanish-American War vets were called "hikers". There are many variations of a hiker statue across the country commemorating that war -in fact I saw a similar one in Bristol. The Meriden statue portrays a hiker in the uniform of his day -long boots, a wide brimmed hat, his shirt sleeves rolled up, and a rifle held across his body at waist level. A plaque lists approximately 200 names of local men that served in the war. The inscription over the names reads " This memorial presented by the City of Meriden to the veterans of the Spanish American War". The plaque is getting hard to read, and the statue is showing obvious signs of age. Check out the hiker's face -it's an awesome statue.

It seems most accessible parking at the historical society, or the church across the very busy route 4. There is also a gazebo on the green so you can observe them under a sheltered location. The ending of the Civil War memorial is a bit sad. At the conclusion of the list of names, it ends with, "and those known but to God".

The Civil War plaque bears the inscription: The Town Of Burlington Has Not Forgotten Her Beloved Brothers Who Offered Their Lives To Preserve The Union 1861 - 1865 A list of 88 names follows. Some of the names are preceded by an asterisk., The plaque is also dedicated to "and those known but to God". The World War One plaque bears the inscription: Let Us Hold In Honored Memory Those Who Served Their Country In The World War 1917 1919 A list of 43 names follows. The plaque is in poor condition and is very hard to read.

The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch is located in Bushnell Park in Hartford, CT. From May to…read moreOctober, Thursdays from 12-1:30, they offer free tours, weather permitting. This beautiful Gothic style brownstone arch was designed by a Hartford architect named George Keller; his ashes and his wife's ashes were buried in the East tower. In 1886, the monument was dedicated to the 4000 citizens from Hartford who served in the Civil War; of those 4000, 400 died. There are scenes on the sculpture from the Civil War, terra cotta angels, and 8 foot statues; these 8 foot statues depict the type of people who served in the war; from farmers, students, freed slaves, etc. There's a bronze plaque honoring the 128 African Americans from Hartford who fought in the war. I saw this arch from afar and up close. It is a magnificent work of art. It's grand and a great symbol to honor the people who fought in the war. It's a historic landmark and I really appreciate the intricate work and history behind it. I highly recommend a visit and can't wait to visit it and go on a tour next time.

This very cool sight is located on a small town green between Town Hall Road and Buckley Highway…read more You'll see a big jet-black cannon on a stone base and big pile of cannon balls arranged in a pyramid. The cannon is set on a series of granite slabs that act as the base of a Civil War memorial. There are plaques on the sides of the base, the charter members of Union's D. P. Corbin Post 74 G.A,R, (Grand Army of the Republic), a full roster of Union's Civil War soldiers, and the main marker that reads: In grateful memory, To the mothers who gave their sons To the soldiers who gave their lives and To those who daring to die, survived The War of the Rebellion 1861 - 1865 The monument is from 1902 and the plaques are showing obvious staining and weathering damage.

I was in Union Station tonight, waiting for my brother-in-law's train to arrive from New York…read more Being the night before Thanksgiving, the train station was packed and there was nowhere to sit, so I took a leisurely stroll around the building when I saw a plaque mounted on a wall by the rear staircase. Turns out the plaque commemorates the very first commercial electrical service in the state --way back in 1883. The plaque was presented by the Connecticut chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The electrical service was provided by a new utility company named The Hartford Electric Light Company. They put on a lighting demonstration at Union Station using a coal-fired boiler to generate steam, which powered a generator to produce direct current. The electricity powered 21 lights that lit up the train station, 2 drug stores, a bar, a bakery, and a few shops. The Hartford Daily Courant proclaimed: "The push and enterprise of the new company promises well for the early use of electric lights on the principal streets of the city." The 20th Century was knocking on the door.
