They have self service donation bins and a table for you to sign in and pick up your receipt. While I was there I saw a few folks lined up to recieve items which made me feel like the items are actually going to people in need vs another retail resale store. Highly recommend if you need to give or recieve.

ACSGW will gladly take donations of clothing, shoes, accessories, linens, small appliances, kitchen/household items, toys, home décor, books, flat screens, and laptops (less than 5 years old). There were 42 of us all volunteering to create and pack boxes of assorted canned/packaged food for 1.5 hours, followed by a tour of the facility. The place is HUGE and feeds 1 million people annually and some 60 million meals. While I didn't stick around for the tour, I will volunteer again. It was a phenomenal and rewarding experience knowing we were preparing food to feed the food-insecure throughout the DMV.

Fast forward to today, Capital Area Food Bank feeds 60 million meals a year through direct distribution and non-profit partners. They are like the Costco of food banks where non-profits like Martha's Table get their meals to hand out locally. If you're looking for volunteer opportunities, Capital Area Food Bank hosts two groups a day Tuesday through Saturday to help organize food donated at their distribution center. It's a massive warehouse with heavy equipment so you have to be 12 and older to volunteer. Once inside and trained, you'll notice inspiring murals and art inside walking guests through the work. Outside is a working garden with an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven to help teach youth about nutrition. Capital Area Food Bank is making an impact on the D.C. area!

The Children's Inn at NIH is an amazing place. They provide lodging for children, and their…read morefamilies, who are being treated at NIH. It is a warm and attractive facility. As they say on their website "While the NIH takes care of the child's medical needs, The Inn tends to the child's heart, soul and spirit." When you enter the building it looks like you have entered an upscale ski lodge. There is a reception desk to the left, but straight ahead is a sitting area with plush couches and a fireplace. As part of a service organization that provides Sunday dinners 3 times a year, I have only been in the public areas. They have recently added new kitchens, done other renovations, and built a new outdoor play area. Each family has their own private room. There are various public rooms such as a computer area, a quiet room, and dining areas, etc. Our group prepares a meal in a double kitchen equipped with 4 stoves, microwaves, sinks, small appliances, and kitchen equipment. There is a pantry with paper products and non-perishable items. Each family has a personal refrigerator for their own use and there is a common refrigerator for anyone to take advantage of. Volunteer groups can leave leftovers in the common refrigerators for residents to use. Behind the kitchen area we work in is a laundry room with a number of washers and dryers. Staff and volunteers provide a large number of diversions and activities for the families. One night there was a high school choral group; another time someone was organizing board games; and another night an outgoing man was setting up a bocce ball set for after dinner entertainment. Each child apparently has a mail box where small "treats" are provided. There are many ways to contribute to this amazing organization with donations of time, of money, or in kind. When I am at the Inn I feel sad for the children and their families, but I am thankful for them that they have the Inn and that they are getting treatment at such a remarkable, caring facility as the National Institutes of Health.

We were so grateful for all the help they offered us while we were there on our first visit. My girls love coming "home" to the children's inn. There is so much to do there--the staff always has movies available for kids and lots of fun activities planned. They even have a sweet therapy dog for the kids to love. . There is nothing you need to bring when you stay here besides your pillows and clothes. My girls always ask when we get to go back to see the amazing doctors there and stay at the Childrens inn. So blessed to have had this experience.

It's not the largest clothing selection but high quality and good prices. They also had a sale when I was there, which was buy one red tag item and get two free. When you finish browsing upstairs, they put your items in a bag and total it for you before you go back downstairs to pay. The building is an old house, so it has multiple small rooms. It can feel a bit cramped at times, and sometimes the lighting wasn't the best. I just used the flashlight on my phone! They also have changing rooms upstairs, which is fantastic! The volunteers working there were very nice. It's a great stop if you're in the area!
