The bar across from the lil pisser. We showed up fashionably early. Aka first folks in the bar. So we were able to secure a spot to watch the folks taking pictures and gawking at the "manneken pis. Perfect perch. Me not too fond of the beer choices, Number 1 son got me a Duvel that was yeasty. So I switched to Bel PIs. Mulled wine for Pooja our tour guide. Son got a flight of stuff. One tasted like mulberry turpentine. Yuck! Nasty! This is where Pooja told us the story of the lil pisser. Pooja is an alumni of sister who also went to OWU with #1. Bae just happened to see her FB check in also in Brussels and told us to ping her. So upon arrival in Brussels we met at a bistro then walked here. Ah MZ could use this as a story of why FB is important, bringing friends from the entire globe together. Shrinking the world for good. bah humbug! The place quickly started filling up as apparently nothing happens until 11 am. The sole bar keep bored initially was kept on his toes as patrons soon started get beer in multiple doses. This is a place to drink not eat and boy was there serious drinking going on! A family with two kids met another family with one. The folks with two about 7-8 years old boys quickly and completely passed out at a table. Not from drinking mind you. Our guess was this was the best alternative to watching mum and dad get lite. Which wasn't a new thing. So like regulars without the indulgences many Americans give their kids (iPhones or iPads) simply took a deep nap! After a few, dad gets up stumbling, turns around and is amused the kids are literally asleep at the table. Coats on hood on heads, and heads on hands planted firmly on the table. He tries to snap a photo of his sleeping kids but his equilibrium was askew. So he handed the Samsung to his also inebriated wife. She dropped the phone on the table with a resounding thud! Nope those kids didn't budge. Now mum n dad had a concerned look on their faces. And each picked a kid and shook them to make sure they were alive. The kids, pissed off at the rood awakening, mumble and struggled to escape their clutches. Satisfied the kids were alive and apparently not interested in any beverages or snacks, dad saunters to the bar to order the next round. Meantime the single kid, a girl, sits next to her mum on a bar stool dressed in onesy pajamas with pink elephants. She is happy to get all the adult attention, letting those sleeping boys lie. She asks for and receives an orange soda. Ok back to drinking on a rainy lazy Sunday in central Brussels. The whole scene, a slice of life.

It's a statue of a little boy peeing. Not quite sure what the allure, excitement, or "need to see" factor is but... I saw it. It's also really, really small.

Reopened recently after being closed for at least 18 months, the Taverne Manneken Pis is a beautiful space, but it feels kind of soulless, in contrast to Pochenelerkellder across the street. It does a have a large plasma scree TV and attracts a crowd for the soccer matches but really ought to do better given its location catty-corner from the Manneke Pis. Due to its ties, it serves exclusively Duvel-Mortgaat products on its 15 draft lines (Duvel, La Chouffe, Maredsous, Vedette, etc.). Great if you wanna catch a game (with free serve-yourself bar snacks) or are craving a draft De Konnick (not as easy to find in Brussels as in Antwerp), but look elsewhere for atmosphere.

They have a few options for pasta, but pretty much all of them will come with a heaping amount of average spaghetti, tons of meaty sauce, and copious amounts of cheese. I like my pasta covered in parm but this was a new level, and I had to scrape off a lot. Portions are extremely large, which ends up making the prices quite reasonable, but I struggled to finish mine, and not just from the size. My short rib topping was meh; I would just stick with the normal bolognese. Beer selection is pretty good. Our first waitress was indifferent but we later had a charming and attentive waiter. Bathrooms are grungy and communal, like a dive bar or venue. I can see why this place gets recommended to tourists, as it's in a charming neighborhood with a mix of locals and foreigners, it's easy to get a seat, and it's an attractive value. However, I just didn't think the food was good.

With this, I was slightly dubious - but they seriously know what they're talking about. After a long journey and lazy afternoon in and around the hotel, we hopped in a taxi and went straight to Monk for our first evening meal in Brussels. Aesthetically, everything is just spot on for me. From the window decal to the floor titles and the dark wooden cladding to the hidden nature of the restaurant in the back, if I could transport one place back to the UK with me it would be here. We managed to work our way through the Thursday night crowds and into the restaurant to grab a table; there was roughly a twenty minute wait but, with a Frankie & Benny's style buzzer to let us know when the table would be ready, we headed back into the bar. I went for their standard blonde on draught and Kate W. found her new favourite beer in the world, kriek boon. The atmosphere was the right balance between busy but not overwhelming, and service at the bar was super speedy despite the crowds. Once the buzzer went off, we headed immediately back through and settled down to look over the menu. It's a super simple set up - you choose your pasta sauce and cheese topping - for €10. We both went for the classic bolognese (the dish we'd read the most about) topped with parmesan. The whole meal experience was simple, no frills, but absolutely excellent. We visited again on our last day just for a drink, but their deli selection is well worth partaking in from what we saw; a whole range of meats and cheese, plus a traditional pea soup and hunks of bread, all soundtracked by someone playing the grand piano. Whether you're after a simple laid back beer or full dinner experience, this is the place to be.

I left to find something else but tried my luck & coming back. Glad I did! They have wine, but as I was told, beer is their thing. The food was excellent and the staff are colorful and efficient as the flow between tables! I had the meatballs (2 large ones), meals come with a small salad and a side & bread! The beer selection is wide. Mostly Belgium ones. Other tables had what looked like delicious tuna, lasagna and stew which they all seemed to enjoy.

No reservations, so you have to wait in line. Luckily, the line moved pretty quickly and we were able to be seated inside. -service was great. The fabulously dressed flamboyant gentleman was kind and helpful. The sassy woman was hilarious! -Portions are pretty decently sized and priced fairly Why three stars? I just didn't enjoy anything that we ordered. Sadly, it was my least favorite meal that we had in Belgium. Based on all the reviews, I think it's clear that it's not the place per se, but what I was looking for. That being said, I still must be honest. What we ordered: Cheddar Croquettes (2 for 14 Euros): Just ok and this was one of the things that I felt was overpriced Carpaccio of Smoked Beef with White Truffle Oil (18 Euros): Again, just ok Meatloaf with "Jack Pepper" sauce (26 Euros): "Jack Pepper" means something different in Brussels. It was basically a peppercorn gravy. I wasn't a fan, but Jim G. enjoyed it. With this, we had frites and a small side salad. I know many people recommend that Flemish Beef Stew, but we already had that at Fin de Siecle, and I couldn't imagine that any place would top it, so we didn't get it here. Ultimately, this place isn't for me, but I seem to be in the minority.

The reason for the three stars, is the lack of any type of customer service. We arrived during business hours and the tap room was open. We passed three employees walking in and we said hello. We were the only two people in the tasting room except for an employee eating a salad at a table. One by one the outside employees walked in and went onto the production side, not saying a word. I'm thinking, "okay, it's probably not their job. Maybe this young lady eating the salad runs the tap room, and we happened to catch her at lunch." She finished her lunch and walked out without a word. Then as we sat there (and got up and walked around the tap room) for almost 25 minutes. Multiple people walked through the tap room ignoring us completely. After asking my wife if I should just pour us some beers and leave money on the counter she convinced me to stop a guy passing through and in broken French asked him if we could buy a few beers and a T-shirt. Once I asked, he was pleasant and helped us and we tried a few beers and took 6 home with us. Again the beer was great, but we both just had the feeling we weren't welcome, or perhaps being a bother. This was about, 4 months ago btw (October 25th, 2018)
