Manteigaria is a bakery making the famous Portuguese pastry called pastel de nata. They have multiple locations. This location is a tiny shop without seating. They have only counter ledge standing, eating space. While walking along this street, we spotted a line which caught my attention. When I realized they are in line for the famous pastel de nata, I decided to try their version, too. This location sells no other food except pastel de nata. (I don't know about their other locations.) At least five workers with their speedy fingers work the dough to mold the cups. Theirs cost €1.50 each, a fair price.
Visually, their pastel de nata is extremely pleasing - bubbly well filled to the top (not sunken) custard cups of crusty pastry. When we saw others walking away with shopping bags full of them, we got greedy and opted to get two each. Alas, it was a poor bet. Their version is extremely sweet, so, so sweet. It is a sugar-high level kind of sweetness that took away any custard flavor. We will not buy from them again. There are better versions elsewhere.
Side note: They have a bathroom downstairs. It is tiny and wet. read more
