I have now been to the Fat Fowl three times. The first was excellent, the second good and the last…read moremediocre. I hope this place isn't going downhill rapidly and that it was only sheer bad luck, as it would otherwise be a great shame and a wasted opportunity. The Fat Fowl is a bistro restaurant / tapas bar. The rub of every tapas bar outside Spain is that they are all inevitably phoney. If you have been to Spain you will know exactly what I mean. Spaniards eat delicious (and mostly inexpensive) tapas in a myriad of bars/restaurant. Tapas in Spain are for the most part incredibly fresh and of a huge variety. The last time I went to the Fat Fowl I therefore committed the cardinal sin of ordering tapas, with great expectations.... Well, what I received was a mere travesty of tapas, really just more "tapones" than "tapas".... The spanish tortilla for example, was a stodge, the potatoes in chilly sauce just greasy, the squid rubbery and so it went on... Perhaps it was my fault, but I'd rather restaurants offered honest English cuisine than trying to copy (badly) the gastronomy of another country.... And the first time I went to the Fat Fowl (a year before the last visit) it was just that, very good local ingredients imaginatively presented and served with flair. What a shame that they decided to go down the 'exotic' way, offering something they are clearly unable to produce. Anyway, I still think it's worth a visit and perhaps, as I said, it was just bad luck.

Great food, great service - lovely staff, and a really fun view of the canal. As newbies to canal…read moreboating, it was a bit of a relief while we ate, to watch others struggle like we do! We're not alone :-)

Our first morning in BoA & we were so freakin' hungover. Our partners in crime (whom we met, in all…read moreplaces, NY city & they live in Bristol) recommended this place & insisted we have the "Full English" or "Fry Up" for breakfast. This place is right off of the canal & has plenty of outdoor seating. We ordered at the counter & I added a coke to my meal because I needed the sugar. I got a glass with one ice cube but was pleased when they filled the glass up to the top after I asked. We wandered outside to wait for our friends & find a table to eat at. Our friends arrived, placed their order & found us at the table. From the looks on their faces they were struggling as much as we were. Our breakfast was served & I will say....it was interesting. Scrambled eggs with bacon, sausage, baked beans, fried tomato & mushrooms, black pudding & toast. The bacon is different to what we have here in the US but tasty as were the beans (straight out of a can, good thing I like baked beans), the sausage was meh. The black pudding I steered clear of because it looked like a piece of charcoal & I don't eat blood. Overall the meal was good, tasty & filling. It made me feel human so that's a huge plus. Loved watching the long boats gliding up & down the river. Looked like some people lived on theirs. I guess it would be like tiny house living. Definitely a great place to sit back, enjoy a good meal & company.
