    Cookie butter cookie

I walked by the cookie vendor and everything looked amazing if I chose to go with the cookie butter, it was crispy on the outside yet gooey on the inside. It also had a mound of cookie butter cream in the middle which was incredible, a decadent treat most definitely!

The food court area. Very busy on a Tuesday midday.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Market selling local and artisan goods. There's an enclosed indoor section that's open year-round and an outdoors open air section that's open during warmer weather. The Long Version: Atwater Market is a fun market to go to. It's along the Lachine Canal. There's an indoor section that's permanent and open year-round. It houses mostly butchers (selling very expensive meats, lol), cheese mongers, fish mongers and bakeries and other shops selling artisan foods. The outdoor section is seasonal and in the summer it's mostly fruits, vegetables and plants. There's also an open-air food court called Pôle de Saveurs which is open May -October. We ate at Le Petit Sao in the food court and it was excellent. The food court does get a bit crowded though (we went on a Tuesday around lunchtime and it was packed). The outdoor seating is communal picnic tables. If you're a bit antisocial like us, fear not, they have several small round tables for 2 inside the indoors section of the market and most were unoccupied. We snagged a table and had a quiet and comfortable lunch. There's parking on-site. The first 15 minutes is free if you are just grabbing something quick. Otherwise it's $2.25 an hour (rounded up to the hour). It's right by the Lionel-Groux Metro station, so very accessible via public transit. Review #148 (2025)

Huge market, beautiful produce, tons of shops surrounding the food stands that sell all sorts of dry goods, jams, syrups etc. A handful of food trucks and picnic tables for grabbing lunch. And then if you enter the inside shopping area up the stairs there are a bunch of meat suppliers.

Visiting Montreal with my family. Went to Marche Atwater and tasted some marvelous cheeses with Patrick, amazing pork pate with green peppercorns, and yummy smoked meat sliced thinly. Bought some amazing and fresh strawberries and raspberries! The boulangerie had great olive bread and many other selections!

For the past few years, I have enjoyed Marche Atwater more and more...there's a well defined food court outside the main building with lots of choices of ethnic cuisines. There's a really large flower and plant shop also on the outside with beautiful choices for those who love colorful greenery and flowers. Still there are dozens of vegetable and fruit stands at the market as well as many prepared and gourmet food stores. Easy to get to using the metro at Lionel Grioulx.

Beautiful market with lots of options!!! You can score quite a few deals!! Lots of fresh, local produce that looks beautiful. I picked up some fresh produce and a baguette from a store which claimed to have Montreal's #1 baguette. I always love coming to the market. There's so much to see and shop for. I'd recommend coming hungry because there are some stalls in the centre serving full meals. Next time I'll have to go to the flower shop!

Such a cool indoor/outdoor market for everything you could need want or dream of!! We were able to find some of our favorite French grocery brands and treats inside too which was an unexpected treat. We loved wandering throguh and then enjoying a little lunch in the outdoor food stall area. The food stalls are radically over priced (noteably the Thai food stall charge $25 for a small noodle dish) but was tasty. The vegetable displays are so intentional and all the mums in season right now are beautiful!

I love markets especially ones where they're multiple stalls with different items and folks that specialize in areas like meats, fishes, produce, nuts, etc. Although in the US we have farmers markets where it's kind of similar, I like that this is an actual location that is permanent and most of the stalls are indoors so you're safe from the elements. You can find a variety of goods here and can get lost in a good way. We only had to pick up a few items for New Years Eve so we picked up cake, veggies, a sparkling cider, cheese as well as lobsters. It was a bit crowded initially but there were areas that were a little less which was nice. Either way it's a lovely spot for those who like to peruse goods/food and also great if you're looking for local items for gifts!

The whole place is a delight. Sat yourself a spending limit, and make sure you reserve some for the bakery/patisserie. I was happy to wait in line on a busy Saturday to grab a second "Royal". It's well and surely the best confectionery I've ever seen. All of the vendors were enthusiastic. The meats, cheeses and produce beautiful. Truly large enough to have anything you want and small enough to walk everything-and be known if you go regularly.

    Cappuccino, latte, pastries

Lovely breakfast here at the market. We ordered some pastries and a latte and cappuccino and were seated to enjoy. Everything was truly so tasty. Afterwards we walked around to check out the other businesses here in the market. Many great options for fresh meat, cheese, pasta, and more. We went on Monday morning and it was busy!

Definitely worth a visit to enjoy some delicious breads, cheeses, jams and jellies as well as all the spices you could imagine and chocolates galore. It's markedly smaller than Jean Talon but you can find all your essentials here. It's mostly covered or indoors which was convenient on the rainy day we visited. There is also free 90 minute lot parking which was much appreciated. I did find some of the prices a bit higher for some items but the selection is amazing. Excellent COVID protocols.

I can't compare Atwater to Montreal's other markets since this is the only one I have visited. It's pretty terrific. More established businesses -- butchers, a bakery, sweet shops, coffee shops, restaurants-- are inside. Produce vendors outside. We bought wild blueberries, apples and 'ground cherries' (they look a bit like a smaller version of the tomatillo, but taste a bit like a kiwi. We were there in October and there was an enormous number of pumpkins of every sort.

    Mel T.

Well this was pretty underwhelming and disappointing... I thought it would be more than just produce but that's mostly what it is. Pricey produce, that is. You can find similar quality for cheaper at the local supermarkets. None of the food stands by the food truck area were open, which is what we were looking forward to. Maybe it's because we came on a Monday, but I'm not sure I'd want to give it a second chance if I ever come back to Montreal. At least there was free parking! And plenty of it (though I can't say the same would happen on weekends).

Lovely walking area both during the day and beautiful at night with locals and visitors strolling, hanging and enjoying the ambience...especially on a beautiful Summer evening like the day we went - it happened to be F1 race weekend so Old Montreal was abuzz. We had just finished dinner close by and as usual were looking for a place to get a sweet treat to cap off the meal. Truth be told, we were heading for Dairy Queen and then saw Ben and Jerry's across the square and right smack dab in the middle of both of them on the square was this little gem of a place. All we needed to see was the Crème Glacée sign and that's all she wrote. It was late, around 10PM, but this place was open. So cute - all 4 sides of the shop. Ice cream, sorbet - many different tempting flavors. I had a small pistachio ice cream (see my pic) - AMAZINGLY DELISH, CREAMY AND PACKED WITH FLAVOR (and bits of pistachio). HIT THE SPOT PERFECTLY. We also bought a few gift items there - some maple tea, maple syrup and jams. As we enjoyed our dessert, we were entertained by a street performer: a beautifully costumed flamenco dancer, twirling, spinning and clicking her heels on her wooden platform "stage" to her lively, upbeat music. If you're in the area, skip Ben and Jerry's and DQ and stop in here! It's a treat!

The Long Version: My husband and I love Farmers' Markets, so while planning our trip to Laval, I marked Marché Public 440 as one of the places for us to check out. We went in May so the outdoors section was open. I doubt it's open year-round, like the indoors section. The outdoors section had lots of affordably priced fruits and vegetables. We ended up getting 5 containers of blackberries for $1 each. We also got 2 packs of baby cucumbers. Each pack had 6 cucumbers and they were $2 each or 2 packs for $3. The indoors section is significantly pricier, but they have gourmet items. They had expensive cuts of meats, gourmet cheeses and artisan chocolates. They had a few eateries too, which ranged in prices. It's a fun place to walk around. Lots of free parking in their private parking lot. Review #97 (2025)

You can visit their creamery, but I had a chance to visit their Jean-Talon Market location - the cheese with the green label refers to the milk of the animals grazing in the mountain pastures during the growing season; the label that has a snow-covered landscape refers that the milk is from the animals that were fed on hay during the winter months. All the cheeses are aged for 2-4 months in the creamery's underground cave and comes with a natural rind; pressed cheeses, blue vein cheeses, fresh, cheeses, brined cheeses, soft rind cheeses, and even other dairy products (such as yogurts, sheep's milk, and cream) are offered. Since arriving in Montréal, I've been on the hunt for some milk from grass-fed animals. Cows, goats, buffalo, sheep - just give me milk from some kind of ruminant that eats grass instead of grain. Thanks to La Moutonnière, I've found it. From professed 100% Happy Sheep, La Moutonnière makes and sells milk, butter, and several types of cultured cheeses and yogurts, all from grass-and-hay fed sheep on their farm in Quebec. I tried their dairy products for the first time this week and am very impressed. Of course it's a bit more expensive than your industrial Québon/Kraft Foods versions but you know what you're getting in this case. La Moutonnière also sells wool, soap, and very reasonably priced lamb meat (I'm guessing those particular lambs aren't 100% happy sheep). The staff are wonderful too - I asked for sheep butter today and was told they were out. About five minutes later, they sought me out in a completely different section of the market to let me know they'd located some butter for me. A great first impression. Find them at the southeast corner of the Marché Jean-Talon, just across from Qui Lait Cru.
