The closest subways are St. Laurent (green) and Sherbrooke (orange) Street parking is available but metered, so if you plan to hang around, best to use transit. The place: Station 16 is a Montreal institution as far as I'm concerned. These guys dedicate most of the art that's on display, to local artists like Stikki Peaches, 123 Klan, Mister X-Ray etc. In addition, they also have regular exhibits that are often theme-based (i.e. Stenciled, which is currently on) so this allows you to discover other art genres and artists that are not necessarily local. You can find some prints by international artists like D*Face and Rone, among others. Service: N/A - you walk in and do your thing. The staff don't have any issues with you taking photos either. Some days seem friendlier than others. Price point: No charge to get in but if you want to buy any of the art, get ready to take out your wallet because it's not cheap! Miscellaneous: You can usually pop by here during Mural festival and get a map of the previous years' murals + those that will be going up during the current year.

This was a must on our itinerary for our final day in Montreal. We did take a uber there but proudly walked back. This museum was massive with 5 floors of all different mediums of Art. It was an easy map to follow to show me what I must! See and others that I call a fast pass, no lingering allowed :) I didn't read about it in advance so was surprised to see some of my favorites included. I got to see a Rembrandt who I love but got tired of after teaching it to middle schoolers for 5 years. There was a lot of modern and abstract pieces that were magnificent you will see in the pictures. Sometimes museums can be confusing in the layout but this one was perfectly arranged in such a way that I loved that after 3 hours the bottoms of my feet hurt and then we made the journey back to our hotel. We had a wonderful time and had to go around twice to our favorite exhibits! I forget the exact price for entry but I was reasonable.

I came in two months ago to watch another documentary on EBM music with old-timers like Nitzer Ebb and Kraftwerk. Had a fantastic time on both occasions. BBAM! Gallery is turning out to be a great little creative space that is part record/vinyl store, art gallery and sometime art-house cinema showing Montreal-premieres of music oriented documentaries. I think the next one that's coming up that I'll probably attend is one on Paul Weller's bands, The Jam and The Style Council. Montreal used to have so many of these kinds of creative spaces but with skyrocketing rents and gentrification in almost all neighbourhoods, many of those spaces are disappearing all too quickly and there's only a handful left now and I think it's vital for the city to encourage keeping these kinds of independent spaces alive, where you can watch these great movies and get a glass of wine for $5, instead of another generic, sterile corporate space that charges you $20 per glass.

They have two options available--rock and roll experience or a nature experience. I'm all about being in nature when possible so that was the natural choice of mine (no pun intended!), if I can't be outside, why not experience it inside? There's a few different rooms that you can go into on your own timeframe. The first one had rocking chairs which was lovely but then the rooms after that just had benches scattered throughout. Besides a few rude people having full fledged conversations in the middle of the experience, it was a lovely immersion experience.

When in Montreal a few weeks ago, I had some time to kill my dinner reservation and just happened up on OASIS Immersion (when exploring Montreal's Underground City, I ended up in Palais des Congres, where OASIS is housed). I decided it seemed like a fun way to spend an hour or so before heading to my dinner. I'm glad I stopped by - the show I caught was definitely the best immersive art exhibit I've seen so far. I think they may offer different experiences on different days, but the show I caught was Nature Vive/Root for Nature. The Root for Nature immersive experience brings together several organizations committed to conservation and sustainable development, including the United Nations, the David Suzuki Foundation, the Workshops for biodiversity , the Age of Union Environmental Alliance, the Palais des congrès de Montréal, Tourisme Montréal, WSP and National Geographic. The Experience is produced and traveled by OASIS Immersive Studios in collaboration with National Geographic. The experience had some truly gorgeous nature and landscape photography (I especially loved the first and third galleries), and I found it inspiring and entertaining and well worth the cost of admission. Definitely a great activity for a bad weather day or if you have some time to kill when other things have/are closed!

We took in the fabulously creepy Bill Viola show, and then walked a few doors down to take in another exhibition all about gifts. What I should have done was read the notes about the show, because when a woman came up to me offering me "her gift of song" I politely refused. Look. I'm from New York. And I was in China relatively recently, where really nice people ask if they can speak English with you over tea, and then they con you out of lots of money. But that woman was actually part of the exhibition. My bad. Fortunately, we were able to experience her gift of song a few minutes later as she performed some kind of aria in front of some painted money bags on the fourth floor. It's a small gallery. But the art was great. And you can't beat free. Especially when you are just looking for something to do in between meals. But in all seriousness, if you're in the area, and have a few minutes to spare, check out the Bill Viola installation. His work is mesmerizing.

Combination tickets (reasonably priced) gave us access to two Kusama installations in one historic building and six Virtual Reality videos in another a few blocks away. Whether you love it or hate it, I have seen some really beautiful pieces done, and for this weekend the streets are closed down east of St Laurent on Ste-Catherine, and there are outdoor stages, skate ramps, and even a Pop Up Gallery that will be there for 6 months which I think is great. Today we got to walk around and watch multiple murals along this stretch including inside Foufs walls being redone, and I really do feel that the graffiti art scene is something that has become synonymous with Montreal. This event began about 16 years ago, and only this year did it become big enough to close the street down. I'm glad that they had the opportunity because it opened the doors up for a lot of talent to have an environment to be creative without endangering their lives. If you are down for some local street art, and some impressive murals, check out the stretch between St-Laurent up to Sanguinet on Ste-Catherine. Street shows are free and between 11-8!

It's been around forever and whenever I…read morevisit Old Montreal (which is at least once a year, in the summertime), I browse the artworks in this beautiful venue, smack dab in the heart of the old port area, on Rue St. Paul. I've visited this gallery ever since I was 13 or so. It's one of the 3 or 4 places I always check out in Old Montreal. Art is so subjective, but without fail, I always find pieces I love in this gallery. They always carry contemporary pieces (paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations), most by up-and-coming artists, many local. I usually spend at least 30 minutes here. It's like visiting a museum: a real feast for the eyes (and soul). The staff always let you browse in peace (much appreciated!). I highly recommend this place.
