However, we do have a nice story. The manager said she'd been training up a new staff who'd accidentally charged our credit card twice. Although the charge was immediately reversed, she gave us a bottle of red wine to apologise. I really think this is a nice example of customer service: both friendly and professional, and I wish the managers/owners (who seem to be new) success.

After booking into a motel I decided to go and look for a place to have a meal, and sure enough I found this place. The Olympics were on at the time (and I was cheering on Kazakstan because Australia was doing quite badly) so I spent some time in the front bar with a beer. I also had a meal at the restaurant and I must say I certainly have had a lot better. They do have a nice beer garden out the front with a pleasant view of the foreshore though. However, since passing through here again I noticed that there was another pub further on that suggested that this place was simply the 'local's bar' with nothing fancy added.

But I am sure it also packs out in peak season and for that reason, I recommend travelling a little further to arrive at Cumberland River Holiday Park. Other than the park goers there are no other neighbours apart from the wildlife that inhabits the river, the forest and the ocean. We were greeted by lovely management and as it was the middle of winter we rented a cabin rather than rolling out the swag. The cabin was clean, simple yet functional. The location was very convenient for seeing the fraudulently-named 12 Apostles, especially if you want to be there at dawn. The cabin was chilly, as the entire continent of Australia and every establishment in it seem to be right now. But the heaters in the bedrooms and the heating pads on the beds worked great and that just made everything cozier. There was plenty of hot water. I thought it might run out, but it never did! The towels were clean and didn't have that mildewy smell that I'd been starting to think was endemic in this hemisphere. Could everything have been a bit newer and less worn down? Sure, but it seems like everything is always just a little bit shabbier than you expect when you're traveling, especially after COVID. It was clean and quiet, and the location was great, and that's what matters most. Be careful on the road in and out. It tends to be overrun with kangaroos at dawn and dusk. They are easily startled, and their preferred method of escape is to dive directly under your front tires.
