Stay away from Dr. Kim at all costs. I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst in urgent care prior to my appointment with Dr. Kim, which was a follow up about a month after my diagnosis. She came into the examination room and immediately began to undermine my pain and cyst. She has an aggressive demeanor and is not empathetic whatsoever. In fact, she never asked how I was feeling and if my pain had improved. She waived off ovarian cysts as being something I needed to wait and tough out, which is advice she would give me if I "were her daughter" which felt condescending. I have had recurring ovarian cysts for about 6 years, first diagnosed by UCSF's gynecology department. So I am very familiar with what happens after getting diagnosed with a large cyst. Dr. Kim insisted that I do not need any follow-up, including no ultrasound. She said that I'm just "extra sensitive" to the pain and that most women wouldn't complain... to which I replied that the cysts affect my daily life and can be so painful that I cannot walk. I explained that my urgent care doctor told me to schedule a follow-up and an ultrasound, which is in line with what my prior gynecologist at UCSF would recommend when I had large painful cysts in the past. She brushed this off and called this medical practice outdated. After a lot of back and forth, she had the audacity to tell me that talking to me was like (verbatim) "talking to a wall." This was extremely unprofessional as I was politely acknowledging what she was saying, even though I did not agree. My husband was at my appointment with me and he was truly appalled by how she was speaking to me as well. She was also giving my husband as much attention as she was giving me (e.g. directly speaking to him about my medical care) which I felt was odd and unnecessary. Please read the other negative reviews about Dr. Kim before making your decision to go to her. I would not even recommend her in an emergency situation as I do not feel comfortable in her care. I have never felt so angry after leaving a doctor's appointment and hope no one else has to experience this. read more

I saw Dr Kim to get an old IUD removed and replaced with a new one, and it was not an enjoyable experience. She did not respect my initial response to questioning about whether I wanted kids, which was maybe but definitely not for several years, and proceeded to advise that maybe I shouldn't be getting an IUD because I was already 30 and fertility starts to drop off quickly. I had to firmly state I wanted the IUD to get her to stop trying to advise me about my fertility. The procedure itself felt fine, though she did downplay how much pain I was in and said most women "barely felt it" so I should be fine. The next time I saw Dr Kim was for an emergency during the early months of the pandemic because I was suddenly bleeding heavily during sex, multiple times in a week. She was rushed, seemed annoyed that I wanted an exam, and dismissed anything I was saying. She insisted I must have been scratched (despite seeing no evidence of a scratch) and waved me off when I said it was far too much blood to have simply been a scratch. I left with no answers and no advice, still terrified that I was losing a lot of blood. I have since switched doctors, I would not recommend seeing Dr Kim if you want to feel like your doctor listens to you. read more

I love Dr. Kim!!! Listen, healthcare should be a team effort between you and your provider, you as a patient should take the active approach in asking questions (whether you think your asking the wrong or right questions), at least you asked. I have to be with Kaiser for a few months and believe me the care is highly different. Dr. Kim listens and gives great advice and motivation to keep trying. OBs at Kaiser are quota driven and I feel - try to get me in and out of their office as quickly as possible. Dr. Kim is very thorough! She keeps me well informed of the process and expectations! We've been trying for months and Dr. Kim has kept me motivated and optimistic of the process. I'm sad I'm unable to continue care with her for the next few months, but I'm hoping that she'll be my delivering MD when I do get pregnant. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Kim's for nearly 8 years. She has delivered 3 of my children and has been such a strong support system while I was pregnant, during labor and postpartum. Dr. Kim is an excellent doctor, extremely knowledgable and willing to take the time to listen to questions, concerns, or to even just be a friend. I would strongly warn patients of Marian Kim's to take a very careful look at their care. Follow your instincts and do not allow this "dr." to push you around or dismiss your concerns. She was grossly negligent in my care. The gist of the story is that even though I asked for a D&C after a pregnancy proved unviable, she opted to give me pills to induce the miscarriage. For weeks/months afterward she ignored my complaints of continued 1st tri symptoms and never ordered a simple blood (HCG) test to confirm the miscarriage was complete. When I finally got a 2nd opinion after 6 mos, I was immediately scheduled for surgery. Very bad things can happen when necrotic tissue is retained. Later I pulled my records and noticed that she'd blatantly lied on them. It was tough ordeal and the ensuing 1+ yr recovery very painful and difficult. I think she's terrible. read more

Doctor Marian Kim seems nice as long as you have no questions to ask. She is always in a hurry. I am 19 weeks pregnant and after my 16 weeks check I decided to change to another doctor. I have been her patient for 10 weeks, I had blood work done 3 times during this time, she never ever gave me any results, I had some nasty pain in my left kidney area, her nurse sent me to have a urine test... never got the results for that one either. At my last visit she just got really rude. My left leg is hurting from the top to the foot, I asked her if is anything to worry about and if there is a reason related to pregnancy. She answered that: "hurts because you gained weight, that's why" to which I replied that if she would have read my chart, she would have known that I actually lost about 10 pounds.. to which she said: oh well, I didn't know, but you are second time pregnant, you should know this things.... Well, since this is the second time giving birth, maybe I shouldn't even bother her when is time to push... after all I have done it before... read more

I have heard from people that work at PAMF that Dr. Kim is a good doctor however she is not the best doctor for an first time expectant mother, or an expectant mother that has complications with her pregnancy. Dr. Kim has very little patience and does not like to explain medical phenomena's or repeat herself. In fact she snapped at me when I asked her to repeat information regarding the location of my gestational diabetes test. As a newly expecting mother I felt that she was NOT what I was looking for. For my first time, I wanted a doctor that was thorough and patient. Dr. Kim is neither. Then when we recieved notice that our baby had a cyst is the left side of his brain, Dr. Kim was a nightmare. I have to say I was more fearful of her delivering my baby than of the pain itself b/c Dr. Kim is very rough. When I had a vaginal ultrasound, she was very rough and rushed. I decided to switch doctors, because I needed someone that was compatible with my expectations of a doctor. Which, I advise every patient to do. Dr. Kim's office recently joined Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and I was in need of a gyno appointment, so I scheduled. She's nice enough, if a bit... loud, but the offices are kind of old with thin doors and, with the loud voice, I happened to be waiting for an appointment one day, and could hear her talking to her patient in the exam room -- not exactly private. She's generally attentive, although I'm glad this wasn't my first gyno appointment because she didn't ask if it was, and sort of just went about as if I knew everything that was going on. She also got a little impatient with me asking some questions a few times because I didn't understand something, but she was still nice. The group of doctors also seems a little behind compared to the rest of PAMF (I've been to Redwood Shores, and family members had procedures at the main building in PA) -- they sent me on a wild goose chase for ultrasounds, which could have been because they had just joined PAMF, but in general they just seem a little out of it. I'm probably going to find another gyno once I get a chance, but I think for the right person, Dr. Kim would be fine. read more

About four years when I was new to the area, I randomly chose Dr. Kim as my OB, and I can say after all visits and having two labors/babies, she is AMAZING. On the first visit I remember thinking the PAMF Women's building was a bit old looking, and that kind of thing would've made me draw conclusions back then, but the good experience with Dr. Kim completely took the priority, and I guess I never really thought about it again. What I really valued about Dr. Kim was that she tells you like it is. She doesn't get you worried about things that you don't need to worry about and then leave you hanging. She's diligent to handle important matters quickly and to give you the information you need to understand how to proceed. That's important to a person like me, because I don't like to get paranoid about medical conditions that may or may not exist; I just want to know the facts and deal with them from there. Also, I could email Dr. Kim and get responses the same day. If Dr. Kim wasn't available, her nurser practitioner would answer or her assistant, Kelly (who is also AWESOME). Either way, the whole team was approachable and responsive. Another plus was the hospital is right across the driveway from Dr. Kim's office, so when I was going in for pregnancy check ups, I knew that I was close to the hospital when it got close to delivery, and she was walking distance. I really got to know Dr. Kim and Kelly over these years and felt confident in their care and also in corresponding with them about questions and concerns. Now that we're changing insurance, I'm sad to leave, but I hope to find an OB and office comparable to her. read more

I needed her help in the middle of the night and she was on call for my doctor. This was the first and only time I've made a call of this nature after hours. She was beyond horrible! She flatly refused to help me in any way and had zero compassion. She represents the worst in patient care and should face consequences for such behavior. read more

I am shocked to read some of the reviews regarding Dr. Marian Kim. I have been going to Dr. Kim for the last 4-5 years. She got me through a very difficult pregnancy and delivery (c-section). I felt completely confident that I was in good hands. Her assistant Kelly is amazing as well. I can call them anytime to ask questions or vent my concerns. They always return my calls promptly and are happy to do so. The office is old and outdated but Dr. Kim is down to earth, easy to talk to and takes as long as you need to answer your questions. To me, that is much more important than a pretty waiting/exam room. Love her! read more

My wife saw Dr. Kim about a year ago with a complaint of painful and irregular periods and stabbing pains in the ovary. Her family has a history of ovarian cysts which she brought to the Drs attention. Dr. Kim suggested there could be many reasons for irregular periods including perhaps peri-menopause. She did not recommend an ultrasound or any followup. Recently, my wife went through a painful period of several weeks where she could not walk without feeling pain and we had to rush to obtain medical attention. She was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst and needed to have it surgically removed. She was also diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis. Needless to say we did not return to Dr. Kim. We were able to find a Dr. who paid attention to my wife's symptoms and worked through the root cause. Our overall comment is that Dr. Kim did not pay adequate attention to my wife's concerns. Many informed people have expressed surprise that such a well known condition wasnt investigated further by an OBGYN, and that an ultrasound wasn't ordered. We dont want others to suffer like my wife and thats why we are bringing this issue forward. read more

I met her for the first time yesterday at my appointment. She is great! I had a string of doctors in the fast year that i didn't feel comfortable with. She is straight forward, but very nice. Her office may be a little outdated when it comes to furniture, but who cares about that? I would rather have a doctor i am confident knows what is going on. I've been seeing Dr. Kim for about 8 years. And, she has been terrific. She has seen me through two tough pregnancies and two difficult deliveries. Yes, she is straightforward, but she really knows her stuff. Her office is efficiently run, although has gotten a little less so since they joined PAMF, and her assistant Kelly is fantastic. If you're looking for warm and fuzzy, I would say that Dr. Kim isn't your doc. But, if you want someone you can trust when you're in the delivery room and something isn't quite right, I'd go with her every time. read more

She was my OB for my first pregnancy via a recommendation from a cousin who had her for two pregnancies without complications. As the Sequoia Hospital nursing staff told me, Dr. Kim is a great surgeon. So if you are looking to have a C-section, she is probably a good choice. In fact, she herself professed to me multiple times that women should just skip the pain of childbirth and just have a C-section. I did not want to have a C-section unless medically necessary, so I should have trusted my instincts and switched docs right then and there. I agree with some of the other reviewers that she was often very dismissive and impatient when it came to my questions, and I don't consider myself to be a person that excessively worries or asks questions. She is jovial though if that's what you like. On my last day of work before commencing maternity leave (what I hoped would be a week of rest before my due date if lucky), I had an appointment with Dr. Kim. She checked my cervix, and with her fingers still inserted, she said "I am going to go ahead and strip your membranes to get labor started, is that okay? It might hurt a little but it will be quick." Before I even had a chance to ask her reason or about pros/cons, she did it. She said, "hopefully, if you're lucky, labor will start in 24-48 hours." I went to my car and called my husband in tears. Labor didn't start and I had a follow-up appointment with her a few days later, still BEFORE my actual due date, where I suspect she stripped me again. My labor started within 12 hours of that appointment. I labored at home as long as possible and ended up at the hospital 5cm dilated with very active labor (according to the nurses who thought things were progressing very well). After two hours, Dr. Kim arrived and said that I hadn't progressed, that she could tell the baby wasn't engaged and that my labor was therefore not going to be productive. She suggested breaking the amniotic sac, which then led to an epidural, pitocin, irregular contractions, fetal distress and an eventual C-section. I didn't get to see my baby immediately either because his Apgars were a little low due to the intense pitocin-induced labor. And now because of that C-section, I am ending up with two more C-sections since the scar caused a complication with the 2nd pregnancy and you aren't allowed to VBAC after 2 C-sections. Thankfully, I swtiched OBs for these next two pregnancies and thus they have been managed by a doctor who is thorough, compassionate and communicative. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS LADIES - THIS IS AN IMPORTANT POINT IN THAT LIFE OF YOU AND YOUR BABY. read more

I think the Dr. Kim is great! She explained a great deal to me. I was able to get an appointment with her during the same week I called for it. I thought she was one of the best doctors I have ever had. I have only seen her twice and so far I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her. For me I think it helped that she was also older because she can relate to more gynecological problems. I love her! read more

I think that she has a fast way of talking and moving that can make some people uncomfortable or think that she is rushing them but she is always extremely patient with me and lets me ask her all sorts of questions until I am satisfied. I love Dr Kim and Kelly. Dr Kim has been my ob for over 10 years. She has delivered two of my babys and about to deliver my third by c section. She is honest, straight to the point. Kelly is the best ever also. She is on top of every need I have ever had. Since they joined PAMF it has been a bit of a challage but that has nothing to do with them thats PAMF. Dr. kim and Kelly are amazing! I have been going to Dr. kim for 14 years. During my delivery 12 years ago, my child was not coming out. Quickly Dr. Kim determined his cord was wrapped around his neck. She did not waste anytime and did NOT do a c-section, she reached up with her arm and pulled the cord over his head and off and out he came. She was amazing and saved his life. He's 12 now. I also just had surgery a week ago and again she was amazing. There were some complications after the surgery (due to an incompetent nurse in the hospital) and she was right there to fix everything. She personally checked on me 3 times the day after my surgery. I would not hesitate to recommend her. In fact my 24 year old daughter goes to her and Dr. Kim delivered her baby 18 months ago. Dr. Kim is amazing and I hope she never retires! read more

From my experience, Dr. Kim definitely worth a solid 4, probably a 4.5. She might not sound as cosy as one might hope and she sounds a little rushed sometimes (otherwise it'd be a solid 5), but it is her experience and skills that matter. I can confidently say that cos I've "tested" her to the extreme with a very rare condition with my 2nd pregnancy. Throughout the course, Dr. Kim explained the risks, all the possible complications, and any aftermath after the delivery. The info was not great to hear but I do appreciate her straight to the point attitude (again, no "poor baby" or "it's ok", etc.) and her knowledge. No wishy washy answers. During the C-section, one of the 1- in-10 chance of complications arised. Dr. Kim calmly directed the rest of the crew to respond accordingly. My condition went downhill really fast and her quick decision has saved me 2 weeks in the ICU. And her followup visits at the hospital actually reminds me of my mom (she might sound pushy on certain things, but you know she is right) For a smooth pregnancy, you might not see that aspect of Dr. Kim; but when you need her skills and outstanding expertise shall situations present themselves, she is just great. On top of that, her assistant, Kelly is awesome as well. She is always fast and thorough following up with my company and insurance. read more
