After years of advocating for my son and searching for a school that could meet his unique learning…read moreneeds, we had high hopes for READ. My son made meaningful progress in reading, and I am grateful for the school's evidence-based dyslexia instruction. However, our experience also revealed important limitations for students with co-occurring autism, ADHD, and executive functioning challenges. As both a parent and an LCSW specializing in autism, I approached READ as a partner. I expected early collaboration around my son's strengths, challenges, and the strategies that had helped him succeed elsewhere. Before significant behavioral concerns emerged, I requested simple accommodations such as movement breaks and fidget tools but was told they would be disruptive to other students. To my knowledge, my son never had a proactive support plan. My experience was that my son's behaviors were addressed primarily through discipline rather than understanding their function or teaching replacement skills. As behavior logs became increasingly detailed, it became harder to distinguish meaningful concerns from age-appropriate immaturity or autism-related social differences. It was difficult to watch my son become increasingly discouraged, isolated, and unsure of how to be successful at school. Despite repeated efforts to collaborate, I saw little emphasis on proactive intervention, positive reinforcement, or identifying the function of behavior. My concern was never that READ had limits to the support it could provide, but that those limits did not become clear until the end of our experience. During our final meeting, READ told me they could no longer support my son unless he first attended a behavior program. That recommendation differed from those of the public school district and the professionals involved in his care. I was also told READ does not have a behaviorist, therapist, or behavioral specialist on staff. The end of our time at READ was especially disappointing. The focus was almost entirely on my son's challenges, with little acknowledgment of his strengths or growth. He was also excluded from the school's end-of-year BBQ as his placement ended. For autistic children, thoughtful transitions matter, and I wish his departure had reflected that he was a valued member of the community. READ can be an excellent fit for many students with dyslexia. I share my experience so families of children with additional developmental or behavioral needs can ask informed questions before enrolling, including: * How are autism- and ADHD-related needs supported? * What proactive accommodations and interventions are available? * What behavioral or mental health expertise is available on campus? * At what point does the school determine that a student's needs exceed the supports it can provide?

The email and phone correspondance is not prompt. When I spoke with the Founder and Administrator, Leah Skinner, she was snarky and unprofessional in her tone of communication. I was saddened and suprised to encounter that. The experience made me choose another provider instead.

I really appreciated that they had stadium seating because it made viewing the events so much easier and more comfortable compared to some other schools we've been to. One thing that really stood out was what looked like a brand new timing display near the finish line. As each athlete crossed, it showed their name, time, and even whether they hit a personal record. That was honestly really awesome to see and made the whole meet feel a little more exciting and professional for the kids. The snack shack though was a little underwhelming. I definitely wish they had more drink options and more actual food available. Hot dogs, nachos, or even just a few more snack choices honestly would have sold nonstop during the meet. I did appreciate that they had restrooms available and they were clean, which always makes a difference during long sporting events. The biggest challenge for me was definitely the parking. The parking spots are incredibly tight, and I was not about to risk door dings, so I ended up parking farther out near the gate entrance and walking over to the fields instead. Helpful tip: If you're driving a larger vehicle, parking farther out and walking might save you some stress. Overall though, the actual track and field area was really nice and felt very well maintained, and that finish line display was such a fun touch for the athletes and families.

Originally, Arden wasn't part of our assigned school, but it seems boundaries were updated--and honestly, I was so relieved since Arden is the better option compared to other middle schools in the area, like Katherine Johnson. The campus does have a slightly "posh" feel, which initially made me a bit skeptical about how the environment and staffing might be, especially given some past issues I've had with staff at his previous elementary school. Thankfully, those concerns didn't turn out to be an issue. The front office staff were friendly whenever I interacted with them, and my son never had any complaints during his time here. Most importantly, the school feels safe and well-structured. One thing I really appreciated was the communication from teachers. My son had done well in math previously, so he was placed into a higher-level class when he started. However, he ended up struggling to keep up. His teacher proactively reached out and recommended moving him to a class that better matched his pace, and I was totally on board with it. That level of attentiveness and willingness to adjust made a big difference for us. As for logistics, drop-off and pick-up can be a bit hectic. There are often long lines of cars that spill out into the street, making it somewhat difficult to get in and out. That said, once you understand the flow, it's fairly straightforward. The only real downside I experienced was during the withdrawal process when we moved. There's a form that needs to be submitted, and it can take a few days to be reviewed or processed if staff are busy. In the meantime, I had to keep calling the attendance line daily to report absences, even though we had already moved out of state. Since it's an automated system, it wasn't always easy to get confirmation or assistance, which was a bit frustrating. Aside from that administrative hiccup, my experience with the school in person was always smooth. Overall, I'd say this is a solid and safe choice for a middle school, and from what I've seen of the curriculum and materials, students are receiving a good education here.

I also had issues with students taking shit from backpacks, which is completely unacceptable and made it hard to feel comfortable leaving my belongings anywhere. The food wasn't much better either--the pizza tasted like it had been sitting around forever and then reheated for lunch, which is honestly disgusting. I also had a terrible experience with the nurse when I went in because I had a headache and was offered an ice pack, even though that wasn't what I was asking for. When I tried to contact my parent or ask to be picked up, I felt like I wasn't being taken seriously. Overall, there was way too much drama, too many problems, and not enough support from staff. My experience with the administration, including the vice principal, was also extremely frustrating. I would seriously think twice before sending your kid here because my experience was fucking awful.
