We went to this restaurant on Saturday evening, because it was across the street from the Regent Theatre, where we had just seen movie. This, by far, was the worst restaurant experience my companion and I have ever experienced! Starting from the fact that the wine glasses were dirty, and still had lipstick marks, to the over spicy curries, to the fact that the mushroom dish seemed like it had simply been re-heated from a previous meal, to the fact that the server didn't seem to really care about our dining experience - it was a dinner to be remembered, for all the wrong reasons. When I had wanted to order a glass of Shiraz with dinner, our server told us that they served a very high end Shiraz that was expensive. When I asked how expensive, she didn't know - and had to go find out! I'm not sure how a server in any establishment cannot know what products they sell, and the pricing. I ended up getting a glass of Merlot instead. Finally, after my companion told our server that the mushroom curry was horrible and to inform the chef, there was no reaction from the server. Ordered butter chicken, saffron rice, garlic naan, samosa duo. Ordered 2 samosa duo's that are 1 chicken and 1 beef and we got 3 beef and 1 chicken that were basically a disgusting paste. The garlic naan was borderline soggy and the rice was basically white rice with some sauce poured on top. Butter chicken was ok but that's hard to get wrong. Used to rave about this place but something happened either new management or they stopped caring about quality, will never order from this place again. This place has the worst customer service. The staff are rude and unwilling to accommodate. We found hair in our food and this was dealt with in an extremely unprofessional manner. The staff accused of it being our own hair... The food is subpar as well. I will not be returning to this horrendous place. I can't believe they are part of the winterlicious line up...save your money and go somewhere else! SHIT SERVICE. My father bought a few Groupons for Marigold, but my parents are vegetarians and they found the menu is very limited when it comes to meat-free dishes. (BTW, They said the food was fair) My father offered me the Groupon, but didn't give it to me until a week before expiry (Dec 26th). We couldn't use it on the 24th or 25th (holiday), and prior to that the ice storm had hit and there wasn't any power on Mount Pleasant Rd. I also came down with a Flu virus (despite getting the shot) on the 24th and have been in bed since. Between fits of coughing, I tried calling on the morning of the 26th to see if they would extend the Groupon, I left a message, but they never returned the call. Closer to the service hour I called and asked if they would extend the Groupon for a few days, and they said they would not. They also said that it was dine in only, we could not get take-out. They did offer to credit us the $15 to a regular priced meal, but I'm not really interested in that - I normally go to Banjara (which rocks), and I don't really want to pay any money for a restaurant that's just OK. The Groupon was for 2 entrees and bread, so my boyfriend went to the restaurant alone to use the Groupon in the dining room. They wouldn't honour it because they said it was for 2 people. Both of the waiters harassed my boyfriend, treated him with derision, and were reluctant to call the owner. My Boyfriend offered to go outside and grab someone off the street to be the second, but the waiters refused. In any retail business, the product is only a portion of what you're selling. Service and relationships are essential parts, and sometimes you need to be flexible and make exceptions for clients. If they had bothered to extend my groupon by a day, or two, and we liked the food, we would have become regulars - they're right around the corner from our house. By forcing us to let our Groupon expire they saved approximately $15. Nice Christmas spirit. read more

The briyani, mushroom curry and eggplant tasted way too heavy with masala which frankly overpowered the entire meal. Very disappointed, definitely won't be going back. Not sure why it took me so long to find this place! Order for the first time two weeks ago and order again this week. Both times were great. Large portions at a reasonable price, especially if you order the meal for 2, which includes an app, 2 meat dishes, one veggie dish, 2 naans and rice. A ton of food! Great quality, meat was very fresh and tender. Lamb especially was good which can be hit or miss at some places. Chicken Biriyani and Lamb Korma are our two favourites. Went there for the first time last week and it was just a lovely experience. The food was very good - light and even the dishes that were sauced up tasted fresh. It was served quickly and presented well. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Like the best family-owned restaurants there are one or two people there who must be relatives because they weren't hired for their experience :-). But even they were charming. And the ultimate test of customer service: we used a groupon and still felt we got VIP service. We'll be back. read more

Wow! The search is over! I have now found my 'go to' Indian delivery in midtown Toronto. I had pretty much given up finding great Indian food in the central area , thinking that we had to go to the outer suburbs to find it. I'm glad to say, that this isn't the case! I'm sorry to say that the food I ordered for delivery was awful. It arrived barely warm and was almost inedible . I had the chicken tikka masala also raita and mixed pickle. It was disgusting. I've been to India many many times and love all sorts of Indian food but this was possibly the worst I've ever had. The second person said they had 7 orders waiting and they hadn't updated skip the dishes. Our app said the courier would be matched when the order was ready. So we got no food and no updates. THEY STOLE $15 A little dramatic subject line, eh? Alright, let's get to it. But first, a little back-story. I first discovered Marigolds through the purchase of a Groupon. The deal was $15 for 2 Mains and a Bread. It was conveniently located near my girlfriend's place and when we went, the food was good enough to warrant another visit. Which we did probably 2 other times. But now, no more. I had purchased another Groupon (same $15 deal). However, at this point, it had expired, which is fine. If they wanted to honour it, that would have been excellent customer service, but it was unnecessary and not expected. What was expected was what was clearly stated in the Fine Print on the Groupon voucher: although the "Promotional Value" (the deal) expires, the amount paid never does. Hence the $15 can be used essentially as cash at the restaurant, which we were okay with. My GF and I still have smiles on our faces at this point. We decide to order their Prix-Fixe Menu special which is advertised on a sign on the window and at the top of the menu. It's $40 with a small variety of dishes to choose from. A good deal, however (Spoiler: This is where the stars on the review star to fade away) when we tell our waiter we'd like to order this, he says we can't use the $15 toward it, although I should point out at this point that he's already hit the "redeem" button (he says by accident). An exchange of puzzled looks all around, which can be summed up in the phrase "That's weird." We ask for more time, and I pull up the fine print on the voucher and yup, first line states it can be used on anything. AH HA! I have my proof in hand. I am right! I am justified! Lawyer hat on (not actually a lawyer..... or have a hat on) and show it to the waiter. Moment of victory? Nope. He continues and says it can't be used for the Prix-Fixe option. He says it's because the Prix-Fixe is already discounted. This is then echoed by the Hostess, who although is saying the words, clearly does not believe them. Any counter point we bring up is met with a sad but unhelpful "Yup, I agree, but there's nothing I can do." Another messenger taking the heat for a poorly thought out business decision, and apparently this issue has come up several times before. Essentially it boils down to because their profit margin is so low on prix-fixe, we can't order it. That we can only use the $15 on more expensive items. WOW! Good job restaurant (sarcastic). They've completely missed the point of what Groupons are suppose to do. The point is to bring in new customers by offering a big discount (maybe even at a loss) who will hopefully enjoy their dining experience and then spread the word -- something that we had done enthusiastically, up until now. With this one decision, they lost our business that night and any future night, and instead of recommendations, it's now getting negative reviews. Oh, and we were there on a Thursday night at 8pm and it was completely empty. Should have taken the hint. read more

Ordered take-out. All food is totally delicious. I ordered Chicken Biriyani which is excellent, lentils and the vegetables in cashew sauce.

I LOVED eating at this place, I'd do take out every week and it was consistently delicious. However today I ordered my usual. The naan was black in some parts and in others very much raw dough. One of the papadam pieces had a hair baked into it. And finally, the sauce that was normally a beautiful consistency was watery. Unfortunately I ate the better portion of it before realizing I nearly ate a hair, and for that reason I will no longer be coming back. The butter chicken was to die for! It was so amazing, the lamb masala was good too but I'm a bigger fan of butter chicken. Naan was hot and fresh, and service was amazing, I've never been so happy to tip! The decor was also very classy, and the food was not over priced at all! The best part was I dined with a groupon, so for $15 I got 2 dishes and naan bread, which is really great. Delicate, fresh, delicious Indian food. A real treat and great service too. We had the patak paneer and aloo gobi which are typically afterthoughts, but this place made them spectacular. Take out order. Not the best. The order took 90 minutes to arrive, I was told because of rain and traffic. This was slightly difficult to let slide as I live 600m away (yes, maybe I should have just picked it up myself, but rain...) I ordered khurchan chicken curry and vegetable korma, naan and rice. The chicken tasty but wasn't made up of very good cuts (ie. some inedible pieces). The vegetable korma wasn't very flavourful and was really green bean intensive. The beans were chewy and it just wasn't really pleasant to eat. I've had much better naan - it's quite thin. I was craving indian food, and this didn't satisfy that craving at all. I went in with a Groupon voucher a couple of times. The first time I went was before the expiry and they didn't allow me to use it because we didn't have four people. So I said fine, we'll use it another time. The second time we went was after the expiry, but I could still use the value that I paid for. So I pretty much would end up paying full price like the first time I went, no big deal. What I find really annoying is when they told me that I have to order 4 dishes to use the expired voucher. There are no rules whatsoever in Groupon saying I have to order 4 dishes, and no where did it say in the voucher that I have to order 4 dishes to use up the money I already paid for. The waiter also said that it's an agreement they have with Groupon, and that I should call them to ask. This was at 9PM EST, of course I wouldn't be able to reach anyone at Groupon. The waiter was just really rude, and is not offering us a solution to meet us halfway on the made-up rule. There were only 2 of us at that time, why would he expect me to order 4 entrees? The first time I went, I could understand his reasoning. But the second time I went was just unbelievable stupid. There are so many other Indian restaurants within the area that are so much better in terms of food and service. Banjara at Yonge and Eg was so much better and gave better portions too. I wouldn't bother with this one, because for an additional $20, they would rather rip you off than have you as a repeat customer. I can say that this is my new favorite Indian restaurant, the food is amazing and the staff was very friendly. we had the Khurchan chicken curry, goan seafood and and garlic naan. The flavors were all so different and overall wasn't very oily or heavy as indian food some times is. If you are in the area give it a try you wont be dissapointed. read more

when I read the positive comments, I thought I was in for a real treat. The restaurant small, but nice, good staff, but the food - very disappointing. Had the stir fried veggies which mentioned tofu in the menu, there was none in our dish. I have never tasted such incredibly bland and totally flavorless vegetables. The shrimp dish must have had like 4 or 5 shrimp and just lots of sauce - I would say the sauce would take up at least half the dish. Even though the waiter kept stressing certain dishes were very spicy, I found the opposite - no spiciness at all. I guess I understand maybe some people are more sensitive to even a tiny bit of chilli. The way he kept stressing how spicy certain dishes were - we thought should we even order these? I would have never guessed there was any chili pepper, .. at all in those dishes. I must admit the lamb dish was very good (thus the extra star), beautifully flavored and it did have very tender lamb chunks and wasn't just half a bowl of sauce. There are many great Indian restaurants in this city, I just wouldn't consider this one of them. read more

I have to highly NOT recommend this restaurant. I too had a Groupon for this restaurant and was thoroughly disappointed. There were 6 of us in total plus our 2 month old baby. First, our table was not ready at our reservation time we had to wait about 20 minutes. The servers were pleasant however, the service overall was slow to the point if I hadn't paid for the Groupon I would have walked out. We ordered appetizers which came more than 30 minutes later.....with no word from any of the wait staff and when asked they told us "it's coming." After our not so great appetizers...we had to wait another almost 30 minutes for our food....I'm not kidding. We had reservations for 8:30 got seated at 8:50 and our actual food did not come out until 10pm!!!! People who came in after us even got their food. I would have been understanding if the restaurant was extremely busy (which it wasn't), or even if they just came to us to tell us that the food may take some time or provide us with a reason as to why it was taking so long. All in all, I was sooooooo extremely disappointed with this restaurant that I would NEVER go back and would NOT recommend it. And after all that waiting I was hoping when we finally got our food it would be amazing and worth the wait...but it wasn't....it was just regular indian food....nothing special....there are way better Indian restaurants in the city...I think Amaya is an alright restaurant but in comparison Amaya's was much better in taste than what we ordered....and we tried an appetizer and 6 different entrees. I was excited to find Marigold and after ordering from this place a few times, we wanted to love this place given its location to home but we found the butter chicken too sweet and the korma and some other curries too bland. Anything in the Chettinad curry is definitely worth ordering. Lamb parties (stuffed) and chicken tikka masala were good too. read more

Thought the tikka masala was one of the better ones I've had in the city, save for the fact the chicken pieces were so huge that they must have been for a dinosaur. The kuchuran curry was also solid, nice oniony flavour though it could have been a spicier. The curry veggies in spicy tomato sauce was a let down, however - too much coconut milk, not enough tomato, and the ration of scallions to other veg was maybe 6:1. But awful naan.
