On the more unusual heart-attacky side, for dessert there is a Fried Mars Bar. A Strawberry Tart dessert is offered for those who want a more normal life expectancy. We visited this place on a Sunday night around 8 PM. It was an easy walk from our hotel. They were still doing a brisk business even an hour before closing. The atmosphere is cozy with three or four inside tables and an approximately equal number of little outdoor patio tables for those who prefer to be outside. The format is walk-up-and-order. The staff are quite efficient and pleasant enough to deal with. The food comes out quickly. We tried the 1-pc. Fish and Chips Haddock Supper along with the 1-pc. Cod. There were enough chips that we could split them. It's fair to say that we thoroughly enjoyed these classics. The rest of the good news is that the price tag for these was £23 all in. Not this time, no. I purposely parked my car right nearby in the afternoon, so that we could go for some post-Chili-Cook-Off noms that evening (I'm strategic and plan all my eating far too far in advance). Back in Australia, you might call a potato fritter a potato cake or a potato scallop, depending on where you're from. They are surely one of the best fried foods on the planet but I am constantly disappointed when I get them in Scotland. A lot of chip shops don't do them properly and they are either undercooked, or stingy on the potato content. We popped in here on a Saturday night and ordered 4 potato fritters and a piece of fish. We also ordered chips but they got missed in the hysteria - normally I'd knock off a star but the potato cakes were just *that* good that they still get a 5. So, why were they so good? The potato was cooked perfectly, no undercooked potato. The batter was light, fluffy, crunchy, a bit greasy but nothing too bad. All up, a perfect fritter and I've just ruined my Tuesday morning because now I want more. Will I be able to resist the lure of this place whenever I'm on GWR? Never again.

You did not mind that the haddock was cooked to order and that a trip to Allan's was a fifteen minute slice out of your day. However, in the last couple years, things have gone downhill a bit. When you have a reputation and most of your business comes from the lunchtime school trade, maybe you don't have to try as hard. Places around them have not gotten better, Allan's has just gotten a little worse. The fish is not as good and the quality of the chips is also a little less. The mac and cheese balls are absolutely massive and so tasty!! The brie wedges are perfect!
