Potato. Fritter. Heaven. I have found it. It's real, and it's here. I heard so many people over the years tell me about Philadelphia, but I only ever seem to go past when I've already eaten. Not this time, no. I purposely parked my car right nearby in the afternoon, so that we could go for some post-Chili-Cook-Off noms that evening (I'm strategic and plan all my eating far too far in advance). Back in Australia, you might call a potato fritter a potato cake or a potato scallop, depending on where you're from. They are surely one of the best fried foods on the planet but I am constantly disappointed when I get them in Scotland. A lot of chip shops don't do them properly and they are either undercooked, or stingy on the potato content. We popped in here on a Saturday night and ordered 4 potato fritters and a piece of fish. We also ordered chips but they got missed in the hysteria - normally I'd knock off a star but the potato cakes were just *that* good that they still get a 5. So, why were they so good? The potato was cooked perfectly, no undercooked potato. The batter was light, fluffy, crunchy, a bit greasy but nothing too bad. All up, a perfect fritter and I've just ruined my Tuesday morning because now I want more. Will I be able to resist the lure of this place whenever I'm on GWR? Never again. read more

Philadelphia is a damn good chippy. Not like you're Barbecue Kings, Cafe Indias and 727s (other chippys on GWR), they're high class. You still get the deep fried delights (half a battered pizza, anyone?!), but they taste just that little bit better (possibly it comes from knowing that you're in a place that doesn't look like it has been cleaned by the same greasy mop for the past 20 years...). The staff can be a little scary - they pretty much demand to know what you want... so be prepared. So, if you find yourself craving a chippy in the vicinity of GWR, I'd hit here first. read more

I've been eating from Philly for my entire life, many places have come and gone but Philly is a constant. The chips are brilliant, as are the fritters, but the thing that steals the show are the pizzas. The guys who run the place are Napoli Italians and they are incredibly talented pizza cooks. Definitely my favourite chippy in Glasgow. Good quality fish and chips and the pizza is great too. To top it off the guy is so friendly and always gives me a chip to eat whilst I am waiting! I'm sure I've had a fish supper from here before, but I cannot see past the pizzas - some of the best in the city. Connected to the uber-posh La Parmigiana next door, I think it's the tomato base used on the pizza that sets it apart, Boy reckons it's his favourite toppings. My favourite chippy (and also my local since I was maybe 5 years old). The people who work there are absolutely lovely, and always remember me. I love their chips, and also their pizzas. I sometimes get fish from there, but that's not the main draw for me - getting a 7" pizza and a bag of chips to take to the park was usually my reason for visiting. I love waiting for the pizza to cook and listening to the banter (sometimes in English with customers, and often in Italian between the staff). The one time I had an issue with the food and returned it, they were really apologetic and replaced it immediately without question. I can't fault their service. I can't guarantee my review is free of bias, since this place holds so much nostalgia for me, but I can say that I've been going there for about 16+ years and have never been disappointed. read more

Do you like chips? if the answer to this is no, then you had probably better get yourself the next flight out of Scotland (volcano permitting) before the authorities find out and a public flogging ensues. So I asked for battered sausage and chips. The chips were grand, I'm not quite as passionate about them as previous reviewers, but they were fine. The sausage however was one of the most paltry, pathetic, hardly-worthy-of-being-called-a-sausage-at-all sausages I've ever had. The innuendo is not intended I swear, but I expect a certain amount of meat in my sausage. What I got instead was a mass of batter around a paltry, rubbery hot dog that had probably been sat in a jar of brine for the better part of this century. It was really expensive too! I came here with high expectations, however the smell of the place immediately put me off. Some chippies have a particular smell of fat which I don't agree with (it does tend to be a Glasgow thing) so I'd already started off on the wrong foot. Perusing the menu there wasn't anything that stood out to me, even though I was hungry. The prospect of unappetizing smells and the prices put me off. I did however get to sample their chips and cheese courtesy of my OH. They were as I had expected, a "Glasgow chip"; soggy, fatty and congealed - especially with the cheese. Philadelphia is in decline. A bit of an institution, I've long been fond of the place, chiefly because their fried food is crisp, almost perfectly portioned, they open late and they can whip through a queue. It's always been a little expensive, and the staff have always been just that touch too far on the frosty side of all business, but you can forgive a lot when the fish suppers are that good and they're the only place open to get something to eat for miles and miles apart from the woodlands rd garage... However, the last year or so hasn't been kind to Philadelphia. The prices have gone up, while the food's got a bit greasier and a bit less generous. Also, the place hasn't been done up in a while, and it's starting to show. What was once a fairly smart-looking shop now could do with a toothbrush taken to the grouting in the tiles. It's still a good shout, but (as long as you're not out at 2 in the morning) considering that there's a perfectly decent chippy halfway down the road on the other side of the Kelvin bridge, and another alright one up towards the Byres Rd end, heading to Philadelphia when you're in the neighbourhood and fancy a chippy is no longer the no-brainer it once was. I feel bad not giving it four stars, as the gaff's been good to me over the years, but I'm no longer all that excited to buy from them...and when that kind of fun is gone, you start to notice that it's just a slightly too-expensive no-bad chippy. read more

Philadelphia is slightly more expensive than the chippies I would usually patronize so I was eagerly awaiting my meal upon ordering, even more so when it was brought out and I saw that it was no bigger than any other cheap fish supper. I wasn't overawed by the quality but it was definitely there. Unlike a lot of places the fish had a beautiful flavour other than simply lots of salt and vinegar (which can be good too, of course) and the chips were flavourful and nice and chunky. I had unfortunately just missed the lunch-time specials menu by 10 minutes (it runs until three), which is basically the same meals slightly cheaper, but nonetheless I was thoroughly pleased by the place. Indeed you can't do much better than good fish and chips as you walk down the Kelvin Walkway, down a set of stairs adjacent to the building. The place itself is very presentable, decorated to look smart and modern with its yellow and black colour scheme and a column placed just to the centre of the room. As for the staff they weren't overly talkative but friendly and polite enough. As a student I may not be coming back as often as I would like, indeed if I find another chippy of decent quality at a cheaper price I will most likely be forced to go there, but when I crave a real nice fish supper I'll definitely be back at Philly's. read more

I used to travel all over the UK for my job and as something I used to do whilst in each different city, I loved to try new Chippies to try and seek out the the ultimate fish and chips supper. In short the Philadelphia IS the best - fish just melts in the mouth and the chips are superbly presented. I would highly recommend the Special Fish - I used to have it every lunchtime when I worked for the BBC in Queen Margaret Drive and I never had a bad chips or fish ever but I did start to get a big beely! ;o) Although the chippie in Stewarton is not bad as is the Viking in Largs and we must not forget the Chippie outside the East Kilbride Shopping Centre next to the bus station - name eludes me for now Viktors? they cannot quite match the quality and taste of the Philly. Perhaps the safest business in Glasgow, the Philly benefits from its fantastic location in Kelvinbridge and has kept punters happy for years with its simple fare. Catering for school kids, from both Hillhead Secondary and Glasgow Academy, and employees of local businesses during the day, the long-standing chippy also does a roaring trade at night thanks to nearby Viper, one of the most student-friendly nightclubs in the city. As such, this place is rarely quiet and staff are kept busy deep frying everything and anything throughout the day. They've actually developed an unfair reputation as being a tad on the nippy side, but having had the unfortunate experience of being sober in here while a seemingly-endless stream of Viper-ites were visiting, I reckon they deserve a medal for managing to keep deep fried wacky student off the menu. read more

Hands down, one of the top chippies in the city. Even as a kid I've always maintained that these chips are of a higher standard - I like how squidgy they are. They're really soft and cooked just nicely....not too lathered in vinegar, either. The fact you can give a detailed review on a chip shop should give you a sign of the quality of this place. The staff in here are a long serving friendly bunch who rattle through long queues in a matter of minutes. They do great lunchtime deals (chips, half pizza and a can for 3 pounds-ish), which go down well with kids from the surrounding schools. So you might want to get in there quick before the blighters (I'm being too kind) scoff all your food. They do fritter rolls on the cheap and amazing stone baked pizzas that are, without exaggeration, effing massive. These guys were what started my obsession with seafood pizzas and their anchovies are gorgeous. I know they're not everyone's cup of tea but seriously, you're missing out if you don't try some of the Philly's fishy toppings. Suppers are slightly more expensive than they used to be, but I'm not going to split hairs as this place could charge double and still provide outstanding service; morning, noon and night. read more

Didn't think the reviews could be true. This place doesn't look special, but it's the best fish and chips I've had across in the UK. I'm from the States, so I obviously am not well versed in fish and chips. There is something about the batter that makes it delicious. It's simple, huge portions, and relatively cheap. I'm coming back before I leave Glasgow. Also ordered a pizza for less than £4 and the pizza is also yummy! Hit the spot! read more

As a Philly native I freaked out when I saw this sign. Big let down though, no cheesesteaks sold here, and as far as I can tell no actual relation to Philadelphia. This is by far the BEST fish and chip shop in the West End of Glasgow. Great selection of suppers and singles. The chips are always lovely and crisp and roasting hot. The fish is melt in the mouth. Their homemade pizzas are sublime, freshly made in front of you. The staff are really friendly when you get to know them, real Glasgow banter at night with the drunk students. Superb!!! If you are an addict to Chips and Curry Sauce (like most Scots) then this is the place for you. I consider myself a bit of an expert on the subject, 25+ years and counting. This is by far the best Chips n Curry Sauce around. The chips are crisp and fluffy in the middle and the Curry Sauce is the perfect hot and spicy that it should be. There's not much to choose in terms of appearance between good and bad chip shops. After a concert one night recently I found myself with a fish supper sized space in my belly. After a quick consultation with the yelphic oracle I was directed to the philadelphia. I found the fare on offer to be of a very reasonable standard presented in the traditional way. These were tasty large pieces of fish and a generous portion of not even slightly greasy chips lovingly wrapped with your preferred selection of condiments. Which since you are in Glasgow it would be wise to make like an native and go with salt and vinegar. I would be more than happy to return to this establishment. If you find yourself with a hankering for the fish supper then don't pass this one by. read more

You know what happens- you stumble out of Viper and desperately need to soak up the alcohol. Philadelphia next to Kelvinbridge is a pretty good place to do it. As chip shops go, this is a good 'un. The staff aren't always the friendliest but the place seems clean and the chips themselves make up for it. Not too greasy- well cooked- just enough salt. Mmmmmm. read more

Those around the west end already know that Philadelphia serves the Best Pizza in Glasgow, or anywhere else. Although it's a chip shop it shares the same kitchen/chefs as the restaurant next door, so your getting decent value for money compared to what you would pay by actually going next door.
