Looking at their menu, they have a variety of fish and chips options, rice dishes, toasties and more. I decided to go for the small fish supper (one fish, chips, mushy peas, and a pot of tea). All of our food came out fairly quickly. The place was rather busy so I was expecting to wait a little bit for the food, but not even 10 minutes later, the plates were in front of us. I added some vinegar and salt to my fish and chips and went to work. Damn, it was good! I was impressed. The batter was perfectly crispy and the fries were tangy from the vinegar. I loved every bite. While you're on the deep fried train, you need to try their deep fried mars bars. Wow. I'm not the biggest fan of mars bars, but deep fry it and pair it with some vanilla ice cream and now you're talking. Make sure to wear your stretchy pants here because you definitely will be feeling full after this meal. A local favourite that's a really great find for fish and chips if you're in the Paisley area.

Allan chose fish. It is very Italian and has the wonderful Scottish-Italian Chippy interior. Lots of wooden decor with the massive fryer sitting like a Stainless Steel Altar along one wall. It is a thing of beauty in a very lovely place. I like these guys. They were my local chippy when I lived in Paisley and I would wander down, get asked how things were going. I would talk to the owner about his golf game and the waitresses about their grandkids. Great place with great people. The large Italian owner with the booming voice would tell you about the Haddock, where he had got it that morning and the quality of it. Wonderful things. You did not mind that the haddock was cooked to order and that a trip to Allan's was a fifteen minute slice out of your day. However, in the last couple years, things have gone downhill a bit. When you have a reputation and most of your business comes from the lunchtime school trade, maybe you don't have to try as hard. Places around them have not gotten better, Allan's has just gotten a little worse. The fish is not as good and the quality of the chips is also a little less. I hope they turn it around but right now we go somewhere else.

The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Found it as a form of confidence builder as a female solo traveler that night. It was still light out when I left and I felt safe walking back out through the alley and to my hotel.

The wine list is replete with moderately priced wines; honestly we would have been willing to pay more for a couple of even better alternatives, but I would not classify that as a complaint. The wife ordered their "Fisherman" which is pan seared Scottish coley or pollock (for 27 GBP). The battered fish with the chips was more delicately done here and delicious. As an aside I tried several times to find a place here in Glasgow or in Edinburgh that did a "special" fish and chips, that is breaded with crumbs and not battered, but apparently no one does that healthier old school preparation anymore (and I need to inform my old work colleague who hailed from Glasgow and gave me this inside tip that it's not practiced anymore). I also had a Chieftain IPA. The side of peas were dryish and not flavorful and small portioned and not done as well and tasty as I have had in London or Perth, just saying. We also had their sticky toffee pudding with ice cream for dessert and that was good. The fries were mediocre. Server was friendly and attentive. 4 stars overall and a nice local flavor Glasgow outing.
