While RSL Clubs are huge in NSW, they're not so popular in Adelaide so its nice to find one that still has a strong presence in its local community.
The Marion RSL Sub Branch is located in Norfolk Road at Marion and they call themselves a progressive and active branch catering to both ex-service personnel and community organisations. Members and visitors are welcome to attend.
What I love about this particular branch is they have a large park area out the front of their club rooms where they have a recently acquired Leopard Tank on display. Despite my personal feelings about little boys and guns, you'd be amazed at the reaction kids have when they have the chance to climb over and play on a leopard tank! They just love it - must be something in the little boy genetics I think.
This is also the location of the Marion RSL Memorial Park. Here you will find a set of gates and a Cenotaph dedicated to fallen comrades. Both were once located on Sturt Road Memorial Oval but where later moved here. The gates were dedicated and unveiled in 1953 by then Premier, Sir Thomas Playford.
The Marion RSL also serve meals in their clubrooms every Friday night between 1805 and 1900hrs. For the non-military minded, that's 6.05pm to 7.00pm. Members and visitors are both welcome. They also have a poker machines, play lawn bowls and have bar facilities and their hall is available for hire. The RSL is open from 10am on weekdays and 12 on weekends. Most evening they close at 6pm at 7pm but are regularly open until later depending on functions and events. read more
