It is a living artifact of coastal development and the Great Depression. Architecturally, the bridge is a swing-span Warren through-truss structure with rigid joints, measuring 217 feet long and 24 feet wide. Its truss design features alternating diagonal members that distribute loads efficiently, while the swing mechanism allows the entire span to pivot horizontally, enabling boats to pass through the Intracoastal Waterway. Originally, the bridge was turned manually by a gatekeeper who lived in the operator's house atop the bridge. It remains one of the few intact examples of early 20th-century swing bridges in South Carolina. Its presence helped transform Socastee from a post-Civil War turpentine and river-trade hub into a connected community with access to Myrtle Beach and Conway. I lucked out this morning and arrived as the bridge was opening to allow a boat to pass. Very cool to watch the bridge slowly turn back and lock with the road afterwards to allow passenger traffic to pass. Major geek moment for me to watch the mechanics, the timing, the quiet choreography of it all. I witnessed a living piece of infrastructure history. There is a small watersports business on the south side of the river. I probably trespassed just a little to watch from their boat launch (but not the dock!) Sorry! I was visiting family down in this part of the country for the past week and during one of our…read moreadventures together we passed by the old Myrtle Beach Train Depot. This railway station has not been in public service since the 1950's I was told but the building still stands and on the nearby rails stand both a decommissioned box car and caboose. Neither of these is open for public exploration inside but the train depot building itself is. Inside the small facility are numerous photographs from across the stations history and a few related relics. There is a time capsule as well which was sealed in May of 2004 and is set to be opened in May of 2054. In the rear of the station which probably originally served as the waiting room area and some office space is a publicly accessible room but I did not go into it as there was a family function happening at the time. My guess is that they rent this room out and let people bring in catered fare. You can stand on the place where the platform used to let passengers on and off but mind your step and the same can be said for the tracks. The two cars can be posed in front of by I discourage climbing on them as all for the sake of your own safety. I was glad we chanced upon this since the photos will make for good blogging and Instagram material.

We were here to pay a tax on our new vehicles before heading to the DMV to get our licenses. Went to the assessors office, in the lobby was a friendly person who walked us in the right direction on where to go. She also answered our questions on applying for residentcy here. She supplied us with a list and lots of information which was helpful. We then went to the assessors office, and by the time we got there, there was no line. Person was friendly, and we took care of business. Pleasant transaction despite lots of papers. We then also went to the treasurer's office to pay the balance that was assessed. Everyone was pleasant at that office.

I especially appreciate the outdoor book drop--you can return books even when the library is closed. Signing up for a library card was straightforward and easy. The library offers printing for a small fee and has many computers available for free public use. There are plenty of tables throughout the space, both in the center and along the sides, making it a great place for independent work or studying. There's also a clearly separated children's book area, which helps keep the space organized and family-friendly. Right when you walk in, you can browse retired library books for sale at a steep discount--often just $1--which is such a fun bonus. My favorite feature is how easy it is to order books online and place them on hold--they'll text you as soon as your book is ready for pickup, which is incredibly convenient. Overall, a well-run, accessible library that makes great use of its space and services. Highly recommend.

We paid our balance of total property and then went on our way to the DMV.

I went to the SC Department of motor vehicles this morning at 9:30 AM when they opened. I knew to…read moreavoid Mondays and Tuesdays. I was taken in 10 minutes. I had a request that they hadn't seen before so it took them a little bit of time to research it. Then I paid for license renewal fee, got my photo taken and got my updated driver's license. I was out the door 45 minutes after I had entered the DMV. Very nice people! Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was casual and relaxing. No tension! The last time I was at a motor vehicle dept was in Brooklyn, New York and it was the total opposite and it was an all day affair.
