Down to earth doctor that's easy to see and no month long wait for an appointment or bitchy assistants to deal with. Wouldn't trade him for the world. I have to add to my review with this very personal detail- I went off my meds for my bipolar disorder because of, well, stupidity. I hadn't bothered finding a new psychiatrist or therapist in the City, arrogantly thought that I could just manage without. Like finding good doctors, a good therapist and psychiatrist that you mesh with are equally hard to discover. I ended up in a very very bad state where I was suicidal and made an emergency appointment to see Dr. Oscherwitz. I was a mess. I started crying in the waiting room, was taken into the back to wait there and taken care of by the nurse and then Dr. Oscherwitz came in. I explained to him what I had done and what sort of state I was in. He started calling psychiatrists he knew and got me an appointment for the very next day, which was a Friday. He then waited for me to call my sister and make sure I was watched/taken care of until I made into the doctors office. It's hard to make any sort of rational decision in that state of mind and I deeply appreciate and am indebted to him helping me when I was in such a bad way. I've had crappy doctors. I've had distant ones who don't bother to know you.. though he may seem brisk and detached, he does care about his patients.. he's always been a kind man with me, even before this episode, and now I'm having a hell of time finding a decent replacement since I moved away. read more

Been a patient for years. Great doctor, knowledgable, and very patient. He seems to genuinely care about your overall health and listens to your questions even if you babble on a bit. He reminds me of one of those old-school drs. You'll be happy IF you can get through to his staff, talk to a live person, and get to talk to the doc. That's the only downside and why this practice gets 3 stars. His staff is not that great with responding to messages. If you're someone who needs good, prompt call backs and follow-ups or high tech ways of communication, go somewhere else where there's more easy access (that's why he's old school - you can't email, facebook, IM, etc.). Many times, I have to call and leave several messages to finally get through to him and often times, he never got the message. Other that that, no complaints to Dr. Oscherwitz. read more

I had a horrific experience with him. He was my doc and about the 5th time I went to see him, this happened... I go to see him for a physical I bring up a concern that my breast keep getting larger. I don't like sharing this, but it helps to get the details. There's a history of wacky hormone levels in my family, plus my bra cup size gets this reaction from ppl "I didn't know that size existed!" so I'm not too fond of the idea of them getting bigger, which they kept doing. His reaction was along the lines of condescension, making fun of me and telling me -direct quote- "there's no such thing as giant breast disease!" over and over and over. No medical talk came into our conversation. Follow that with a brusque grabbing my breasts in the exam and making me go without underwear for no exam reason and I was done. Only at the end did he tell me that he couldn't help me with breast issues anyway, I would need to see my gyn. for that (so why the hell was he having this conversation with me?) I have acquaintances who see him and have no problems with him. But the lack of care, condescension, lack of medical practice, and what seemed like a desire to make me uncomfortable made me sick. read more

Choosing a GP is one of the most important medical decisions we ever make. Finding the right person is difficult. My wife and I found Dr. Oscherwitz. May you be as fortunate. He is a superb physician. Available, attentive, rigorous, never rushed, insightful, and wise. He has cared for (and comforted) us for several years. He has kept us healthy. His knowledge of the local medical community is unequaled. Dr. O is a strong and engaged link between the excellent specialists he has referred us to. I saw Dr. Oscherwitz from the mid-80's until I moved to Oregon in 1993. He's a extremely talented and thoughtful Doctor who spends quality time with his patients. I was sad to leave his care. But, now I'm back in SF and once again a patient. In my experience, he tops the list of doctors I've seen be it in Boston, Philadelphia, SF or Oregon. Also, he's made the top of the list for one of the most difficult patients to please - my mother. Seriously. She's incredibly critical of the medical profession, is very well informed and gives Dr. Oscherwitz the highest marks. Let me also say that I've never written a review on yelp before but I felt compelled to do so given an earlier negative review. You can't find a more professional, thorough, thoughtful doctor. read more

I have seen Dr. O a number of times over the past 3 years.I travel 2 hours each way to see him, from an area that has local doctors. When I need/want to see him , I can quickly get an appointment. He is a good listener, takes time to be with you , has a good sense of humor , and seems to genuinely care about me - an experience that I have not often had with other doctors. I previously wrote a review about San Francisco Internal Medicine and noted that the receptionists are about the worst I have experienced. I have since been into the office twice for my appointments with Dr. Oscherwitz and I still stand by that review. While in the office I sat and listened to the girls answering the phones be really rude to caller after caller. I am pretty sure one caller hung up on her. But this review is now about Dr. Oscherwitz specifically. Dr. Oscherwitz was good. Very easy going and thorough. He was not overly friendly or chatty but he was not rude or inconsiderate and he genuinely seemed to care about my health. When he found out I did not eat meat he went out of his way to go print out a pamphlet on where to get vitamin B12 and the best way for non-meat eaters to get it even though I was in good health and did not seem to need an adjustment in my diet. If you are looking for a best friend in your doctors who laughs and chats all afternoon with you then Dr. Oscherwitz may not fill your expectations but if you want a competent friendly doctor that likes to get the job done I would say try him out and see if he fits. read more

Fine doctor I've seen for over a decade. Personable and has a sense of humor. Knows to whom to make referrals if/when needed. Only negative is he has a bias toward prescribing medicine to solve every problem (e.g. instead of taking his Lipitor I simply changed my diet and greatly reduced my cholesterol). Highly recommend. Genuine cares about me, makes time for me on short notice, etc. Have seen him 12+ years now, and I fear he'll retire at some point (guessing he's around 70). You can talk to him, and he'll listen... I could not ask for or reasonably expect a better doctor. "Old school", in the good way... But up to date with new meds and procedures, too. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. O for 15 years. The best doctor by far. 10 years ago I undergo heart surgery while on recovering at the hospital CPMC he came down to visit me one afternoon and did not find me in my room when out of his way to look for me and found me in the x-ray room weak and in pain. Dr. O has been my GP since I moved to SF 9 years ago. He's fantastic and practices the down-to-earth no bull medicine that sometimes is a thing of the past. I wouldn't trade him for anyone. And I just hope he never retires. read more
