If I could give zero stars I would but that is not an option. This guy is an absolute tool. I did not need to be assessed while at McLaren but they asked and said it was optional and I figured it would not hurt. I was wrong. This crook kept me for an additional day at the hospital because he said a Dr. had reported they heard me making statements indicating I was homicidal. I was not even suicidal much less homicidal. He was trying to railroad a mental health nurse to inpatient care because I guess maybe he was behind on his car payments. He asked me three times during the first interview what I did for a living. You think he would remember if someone told him they were a mental health RN but not this genius. I was in for pain and CMH did a mental health screen and cleared me. Then the NP later told me since Mark assessed me he could override the CMH recommendation. Of course they did not tell me this prior to seeing this liar. I will never step foot back in a McLaren as a patient. I will be going to Munson in Gaylord or Traverse city. I find it hard to believe this guy has so many good reviews, I question the veracity of these reviews. They cannot possibly be real. He provided substandard clinical performance with clearly questionable medical judgement and honesty to be frank. He was dismissive of my statements and he talked at me more than to me trying to build his BS case for homicidal ideation. He lacked professional conduct as his approach to medicine was highly questionable and unprofessional, he actually called me a liar when I denied homicidal ideation and told him he was a quack. He yelled it as the nurse was pulling the monitor away from my bed. His dismissive attitude and unprofessional conduct compromised the patient-physician relationship. It was all BAD, it is as simple as that. I honestly cannot say one good thing about him. I only saw him twice but he made and cancelled multiple appointments throughout the day and I saw him LATE. UNACCEPTABLE! Even my nurse said he was horrible. The NP that was caring for me overrode this MOMO's recommendation and I was discharged to home at the end of the second day on the trauma floor. I have patients on the behavioural health unit I work on tell me that ER nurses and doctors as well as psychiatrists and CMH screeners lie about what they say all the time, I was skeptical regarding this possibility but now I know this definitely happens. What is way more common though is the patients telling me that ER staff tell them they can either get out after 72 hours or they can leave whenever they want. Then once they get on the unit they find out the truth. This is exactly what happened to me. I was told I would leave the next day after a MRI was performed but this was not the case. This experience has made me change my specialty in nursing as I refuse to work for a behavioural health unit, I do not want to be any part of the broken mental health system in this country. This is my first Yelp review. I felt compelled to share my experience, after walking out of my appointment today with Dr. Shukhman feeling relieved and elated for the first time in many years. After too many years of struggling with chronic fatigue, auto-immune diseases, RA, never ending physical pain, emotional drain, skin problems, mental anguish, allergies, and severe digestive issues, I am finally on the road to recovery. 8 months ago when I walked in his office, I felt like every part of me was dying. I was trapped in the body of a 70 year old, every moment feeling pain of one sort or another. Thanks to The good Doctor, I live 90% pain free without any pain killers or other harmful drugs. After 25 years of disappointing Doctors, practices, networks, HMO's, PPO's, never ending tests with no results, I have found relief and understanding in Dr. Shukman. Until now, I had little to no faith in the medical profession. I explained this to the Dr, as well as the fact that I didn't want be given drugs and pushed out the door. I needed a Dr to help me down a road of balanced, homeopathic, wholistic, self healing medicine, and Dr Shukhman has provided this for me. He offers resources for natural drug compounding pharmacies, over the counter alternatives, healing homeopathic vitamin regiments, books, websites, other Doctors lectures and publications, along with pharmaceutical prescription options. I was referred by a friend, and it was uneasy at first, not at any fault of the practice or the Doctor, but because of my own resounding fears. I read his reviews prior to even making my first appoinment, and was satisfied with my initial appointments. It takes many appointments and lots of time to work through it all, and after working together in the short time, my life is finally starting to turn back towards health. Yes, the office is shared and you have to sit in a waiting room with others, and wait for the Doctor. Yes, the office space isn't large and can create shuffling and a little confusion. Yet anyone with any common sense can see through all this and adapt once understood. There is a fit for everyone. If the Dr. Needs to answer the phone, leave the office, can't remember your name, or is late for his appointment, you will wait and understand if the Doctor is good. You never know when it will be or may be you who needs the extra appointment time or the emergency call in a uneasy moment. It made me laugh and quickly sympathize for those who have written the few negative reviews. Sad projection of ones own shortcomings loom over the written words of these lack of starlets. Let it be understood. Dr. Shukhman is a great Doctor. I would refer him to any of my family, friends, co-workers, etc.. I selfishly thought twice about the shine of his praise, as it will create less appointment times for me , however there are so many who could benefit and heal through Dr Shulkhman. The doctor I see is great but the scheduling/administrative staff is above and beyond outstanding . They make it so easy for me to schedule and get help with medication issues or anything I need. Dr. Schulman saved my life when I went through a major depression and thought I would take my life. I had been depressed my entire life. This event was especially scary because I actually thought I would not Be in control. One evening my husband and infant son came home,and they did not see me. (I was in thebathroom). I have been seeing Dr Shukhman as a patient every month for the last five years. I have seen two other psychiatrist before and no one is a match for Dr S! He is very kind, empathetic and knowledgeable about the area of psychiatry. He saved my life on March 23, 2010 when the ER called him and asked if he would see me. Thank god he said YES!! I will be forever grateful to this man and am thankful to have him as my treating Physician. During COVID, I had a severe anxiety attack and could not see a therapist or psychiatrist in-person, so I scheduled a virtual appointment with Shukhman. He was late to our first meeting and seemed very rushed. This was my first severe episode, so I was reluctant to take medication. I had a number of questions, and at one point, he said to my "I see why you have anxiety because you worry too much". He prescribed medication that gave me several side effects, some of which I am still dealing with despite only taking the meds for less than a month. He charged me $300 for first appt. My follow-up was 20 minutes, for which he charged $275. My conclusion...all he's interested in is money, not your well-being. Do yourself a favor and see someone who actually cares about your health. I work with Dr Shuckman's NP, Jarret. I've seen many doctors, but Shuckman's practice is the best. They listen to you about med side effects and are open to trying things most doctor's aren't. I was prescribed ketamine for depression and it's been a life saver. Additionally, Dr. Shuckman is published. I found him after being impressed by a paper he authored about the use of naltraxone to treat depression. I highly recommend this practice, especially if you are treatment resistant and have struggled with other doctors before. They don't push genetic testing afaik, so make sure you bring that up, it's super helpful to see how you respond to meds before taking them. read more

I went to see Dr. Shukhman because he has mostly positive online reviews. However, I should have paid more attention to Anon. Y's 7/16/2015 review, as I had a similar experience. The bottom line: I am writing this review primarily to try to spare others the potentially emotionally toxic experience of seeing Dr. Shukhman. Dr. Shukhman is unprofessional, disrespectful, and seems unable to take full responsibility for his actions and how they affect patients. Be warned that he will do things in his own time and his own way, and if you question him, he may blame and question you. It is irresponsible to treat anyone this way, but particularly a person seeking mental health treatment. 1) Before seeing Dr. Shukhman for the first time, I asked Dr. Shukhman's office staff to ask him to give me a call so we could chat to see if it would be a good fit for me to see him. We made no definite appointment time for this phone call. When he called, I wasn't available, and he had to leave a voicemail. He left an irritated-sounding message: "I thought the weekend would be a good time to reach you. Apparently not." His office's voice mail specifically states that they don't return calls on weekends. In any event, despite this red flag, I called right back. But Dr. S. never called me again. So, I just waited for my appointment. 2) Dr. Shukhman was an hour late for our appointment. (Thankfully, because I called ahead the morning of the appointment, I was told to arrive a half-hour later than my original appointment time, because he was running late). When he brought me into his office, he apologized, and I said it was OK. 3) As soon as I started to answer his first question (regarding why I had originally decided to go on a medication), he took a cell phone call that he said was on his "emergency line." He also said "don't call the emergency line unless it's an emergency." I overheard the person on the other end say something about asking Dr. S. to participate in a study. He said he was with a patient. The person asked if s/he should call back later, and he said no, it was a "great time" to talk. He left the office, and returned about 15 minutes later. When he returned, I calmly and politely asked Dr. Shukhman if the call he had just taken was an emergency call. He said a lot in response, but didn't answer the question. I calmly and politely asked again. He said "it was a call I thought was important to take." In our subsequent conversation, Dr. S.: -asked how I thought we were starting our relationship. (Implying that I had something to do with starting off poorly. To reiterate, all I had done was ask if it was an emergency call. At some point, I also calmly said something regarding the need for my time to be respected.) -had his office manager come in, They both told me it was impossible my appointment was at the time I said it was. They said most likely, I had made a mistake with the time. Dr. S. said therefore, he wasn't as late as I thought he had been. (By his analysis, he was "5-10 minutes late.") -said I was "perceiving" his behavior as disrespectful, but that it was impossible for him to disrespect me without knowing me (this makes no sense). -said he didn't think he could work with me, because he'd always be worried about doing something wrong. -said "I'm sorry" for parts of his behavior in ways I thought were insincere. One reason I believe he was insincere is he said he could not promise to be on-time in the future (though I had explained that I understood sometimes doctors run late, and that what I objected to was being an hour late, and then taking a non-emergency call as soon as our appointment finally started). Another reason he seemed insincere is he said he couldn't promise not to take other non emergency calls in the middle of our appointments. (Really?!) -He also insinuated that he was serving a patient with the call he had just taken, saying something like "sometimes other patients need help. sometimes you might need help. that's why I take calls." Perhaps he wasn't aware that I could hear that he hadn't been talking to a patient or even about a specific patient. -said it was up to his discretion which calls he would take during an appointment. After all this, he asked if I wanted to continue working with him. Because I had trouble finding an in-network psychiatrist who was taking new patients, and because of his other positive online reviews, and because I really need help, I said I would continue working with him. Then, he said "but why?" Clearly, he didn't want to continue working with me. So, I got confirmation that I wouldn't be charged for the appointment, and left. Finally, to be on the up and up: due to judgments that employers etc. may make re psychiatric care, I want to be up front that I am not using my real name for this review. However, I reported Dr. Shukhman to my insurance company using my real name. He will be notified that I called them. read more

His funny personality along with his vast knowledge and experience was able to do what other brilliant doctor in the past fail to accomplish. I'm a changed person who now can look forward to continue to improve my life goal being part of the community. It's been long road that I've taken and after 50 plus surgeries. I keep seeing Dr Shukhman for a number of years by know. When I first came to see him I was suffering from OCD and chronic depression. I felt totally helpless and lost my hope to find a doctor who could understand the depth of my condition. On my first visit we went through the whole history of my previous treatment, the way I felt at that time and in the past and I got the feeling that I found a helping hand. Dr Shukman is a very devoted person and looks not only at the condition but also at the cause of it. His approach is very unique and complex. He really cares about his patients, he is having a lot of respect to people and their problems.
