You have to be able to climb stairs to access most of the boat, but ADA users will be happy to know this attraction is fully accessible on the ground level (which also affords perfect views). Seating is limited, so be prepared to stand for the duration of the ride. I don't mind standing because I often move around to catch different views of the park and enjoy the fresh air. The riverboat is gentle and scenic, offering lovely views of Frontierland, Big Thunder Mountain, and New Orleans Square (bring your camera). This isn't a thrill ride, but a relaxing, meandering break from the park's hustle and bustle. I love riding this boat on crowded days just to escape the bottlenecks. The boat winds around the water and rustic riverbank scenes, complete with animatronic people and animals. It's fun to see what you can spot from the decks. The riverboat has a classic Disney atmosphere too, with a vintage vibe and narration that's corny but immersive. You can step onboard and feel transported back to the frontier days packed with old-timey Americana. The ride lasts about 15 minutes and waits never seem to be too long. I wouldn't opt to wait to ride the riverboat, but since it's usually a walk-on attraction I've never had to. I know it's cheesy but this ride at Disneyland is a classic. If the ride lines are long this one is an easy one to hop on and off especially if your feet are hurting from walking all day. Great ride to sit down and relax on. Wait is about 15 minutes if there's not a huge line, which most times I don't see a line that goes outside of the queue. Recently visited Disneyland and it was hot AF. We sat down to just relax and decided to wait for the Mark Twain. We did rush to the front of the boat to grab a chair and be right at the bow. During the boat ride I noticed there were a lot of different birds on the RIvers of America which was really neat! I saw a lot of Canadian Geese and wondered if they were on vacation too or if they just flew all the way here and found this place by accident. 24 years After 24 years in the Navy, I still go out to sea?!?!? But this time instead of work, I get to enjoy the ride. ;) There's actually two boats you can go on for the river ride. We ended up on the Mark Twain steamer. I forgot the name of the other boat but it supposed to look like a sailboat from the 1700s. There's no assigned boarding group . It's get on the ship and go wherever you want. You can walk to the forward end or aft. The pre reordered message on the 1MC (loud speaker) calls out different points of interest on the starboard or port side. And you can go on either deck of the ship. Overall five stars. This ride was fun and relaxing. There are two boats you can ride at this station and the only wheelchair accessible one is this one. Usually there isn't a lot of people but the boat can fit a lot of people and you can go upstairs too. There are limited seating but you can sit inside some of the cabins and a few chairs are scattered around. A trip that I have fond memories of is when I visited Mark Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Missouri. While there, I took a riverboat down the Mississippi River. This ride always brings back memories of that trip. Mark Twain Riverboat is a 12-minute journey around the Rivers of America. The Liberty Square riverboat however, tends to be closed a lot of the time I'm there but still makes a great slow ride when you need to slow the pace down. The whole time at Disneyland we were talking about these Famous solo riders that come to Disneyland by themselves. I love the idea of this. Yeah, I talk way too much to be alone. People start thinking I'm crazy I need somebody standing next to me to hear all the nonsense that comes out of my brain. My friends were in a deep conversation and this was the first time I ever been on this ride . I just happened to be standing next to a guy that appeared to be standing alone. I couldn't really enjoy the ride because I was coming up with scenarios. Why this man would be on this ride by himself. I thought maybe him and his girlfriend I just got in a fight and he went on Mark Twain, to calm down. I just kept running all these scenarios in my head till I finally just said are you here alone? He replied, yeah, I am . I said one of the infamous solo riders. How is that? He says I'm a keyholder and I come whenever I want. I don't have to wait for anybody I get on real quick it's awesome. I said we've been talking about all the people on Reddit looking for solo riders at Disneyland. Kind of use it for like blind date for the day . He was kind of surprised and didn't know about it. A nice boat ride after a long day of walking and waiting in lines. My fiancée really wanted to go on this little boat ride so of course we had to go. Before we enter, I asked the employee how long was the ride and they said about 15 minutes. The boat just sail around the theme park and you get to see some nice views of things. Some of the stuff I haven't even seen before so it was nice. We sat on the 2nd deck, where the lifejacket is suppose to be since we didn't want to be expose to the sun. PJ is absolutely amazing. I believe she was joking but she said it was her first time being the captain of the Mark Twain. Very full of knowledge and fun tidbits about the park. My guy and I have been trying for 3 years to get into the wheel house and we went on it with the kids and she asked us to follow her up. Great personality and a perfect match for being a cast member at Disneyland. She let both kids blow the whistle and play with the wheel (for those who don't know it's on a track). According to PJ a few years back someone did crash it into the canoes. We left a compliment at city hall but I want everyone to know how amazing of a cast member she is. I really enjoy the jaunt on this Paddle boat around Tom Sawyer's island. I believe it's about 15 minutes or so. Located in Frontierland. There are no height or age requirements and so this is a nice ride for everyone. I have yet to have to wait for this boa ridet- maybe I am just lucky each time-who knows. The boat is really beautiful and well maintained for so much traffic. It's relaxing to take a moment to just unwind in such a busy theme park. I personally enjoy looking at the ducks and geese that call Disneyland their home. The views of the park are nice and there are some good photo ops. You can also get a peek of the new, Stars Wars Galaxy's Edge, area soon to be open ( yes I am a geek that waited to get a reservation). I am going to go on Tom Sawyer's Island next time we go because it has been years since I have walked around that area. read more

There's something so nostalgic about this old riverboat. Besides showcasing Tom Sawyer Island's rustic beauty, this boat also has a unique history. Since this ride was originally part of Disneyland's opening in 1955, it really has it's own vintage charm. After some problems with the steamboat's opening, like the boat almost capsizing due to it's too many passengers, the ride has since had 60 years of successful voyages. With a couple of remodels (1995 and 2004) since it first opened, this ride remains a classic favorite. Passengers can enjoy a wonderful 12-minute ride circling the Rivers of America. Although I haven't been on Tom Sawyer Island since I was a kid, the island and surrounding riverbanks are very scenic. The ride is relaxing and there are some beautiful scenes of an Indian Village, Big Thunder Falls, the Indian Chief, Settler's cabin, and many other interesting sights. I hope I can get back to enjoy this beautiful riverboat before it temporarily closes on January 10th. My girlfriend and I got tickets to sweethearts night and saw they were having a jazz cruise on the riverboat and we decided to check it out! It was such a blast and a great experience. It was dark out so you couldn't see much but the jazz crew made you completely forget about that. They were wonderful, funny, entertaining, and very talented. It was a short but sweet cruise ride, about 20-30 minutes. If we had more time I would honestly go another round! I finally decided to see what this attraction has to offer and now I'm disappointed in myself for not realizing how great this attraction really is. You will take a 15 to 20 minute journey around the Rivers of America and view so many wonderful things. You'll see the attractions that are housed within Frontierland and Adventureland! Ducks and ducklings swim past the boat frequently. Further explore the river boat and maybe you'll discover something that you've never seen before! I'm not sure if they let guests "drive" the riverboat anymore but you can always ask to see if it's a possibility. It runs on a track so everyone within your pathway will be safe! If you choose to stand at the top of the boat, you may get wet from the misting that is emitted from the rear portion of the boat. The Riverboat is not currently in motion... but it was still cool to check it out and walk around. There are some tables on the bottom level to sit and relax, or eat a snack you pick up along the way. We checked out the boat, got pictures with Louis, then ended up getting a tour of the boat. Our tour guide I think was a little nervous but she did a great job. We got to go into the locked Captains Quarters and check that out, and then go up the ladder stairs to ring the bell and whistle and sign a cool guestbook. That was awesome! Its about a half hour tour that in my opinion really needed to be only about 15 minutes, but it was some neat information. There are some little tidbits you would never know without the tour. OK, there's no twists or loops or drops... but don't look at it the wrong way: think of it as the the hugest, most peaceful, prettiest, and most unstationary bench in Disneyland. Who could hate the Mark Twain? I mean, besides people between 8 and 34? For the most part, I love Mark Twain because it's a chance to relax. It's like a 105 foot long bench on water. You get to walk around, too, so it feels like a party. A weird, boring 12 minute party with no food or drinks, but a party nonetheless. So stop giving me grief about my party hat. Anyway, it is similar to the Columbia which, historically, is more "Piratey" and less "Slavey", but the advantage here is three different levels for which to be bored. You pass by the Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain, Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes landing, Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island, Settler's cabin (which used to be on fire), the Indian Village, Big Thunder Mountain, Big Thunder Falls, some animals*, the Sacred Indian burial ground (which I hear Disneyland is trying to put a pipeline underneath). There you will see an Indian Chief, trying to give you a high five. I think his name is Chief Downlow Tooslow. *I love it because you can look for the Disneyland cats, which my friend Mike thought were audio-animatronic until we saw one licking his own butt. Disney's creations do NOT do that. Could you imagine Abraham Lincoln doing that? I can. That WOULD be a great moment. read more

[Review #281] 2018 Yelp 100 Challenge (46/100) Located in Frontierland, Mark Twain Riverboat is one of the originals/classics with some vintage & southern charm thrown in... there are no thrills or frills, nothing but a mellow ride that takes a slow journey on the Rivers of America. During one non-operational season, H found Tiana (The Princess & the Frog) greeting her fans on the riverboat, & her honeyed voice & mannerisms oozed southern hospitality. H remembered this scene on the riverboat where Prince Naveen & Tiana having a moment, & wondered if Tiana was waiting for her prince. :-) The riverboat has 3 levels with an historical narration during the cruise; it is recommended to sit or stand on the top deck for a spectacular view of Frontierland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, & Tom Sawyer Island (this is how we discovered the island because our LOs saw other LOs running around the island) as it leisurely cruises along the river. As you journey along the calm waters, you'll find some rustic & beautiful backdrops of a Native Indian village, Big Thunder Falls, Native Indian chief sitting atop a horse keeping watch, settlers' log cabins, wildlife (i.e. herd of deer & mountain lions in the woods, moose & beavers in the shallow waters, & actual ducks & ducklings wading in the river). Or you stand at the back & watch the paddle wheel go around and around and around. ;-) Not the most wanted ride in this part of the map (Splash Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, & Big Thunder Mountain Railroad holds that honor in the area), Mark Twain Riverboat offers a nice respite from the crowded park. Sometimes we'll score some shaded seating on the bottom deck where we can enjoy a brief picnic & gentle breeze. I'm told there are hidden Mickey but have yet to discover them. One thing I've been planning & looking forward to do (for the LOs) is to get inside the wheelhouse to get the pilot's certificate. =) FYI, the ride stops operating just before dusk to prepare for the Fantasmic show in the evening. But when the show is on hiatus, the nighttime cruise is elevated from average to awesome! Everything is just better in the dark... come on by for this idyllic ride. read more

Yes, finally got to ride the Mark Twain Riverboat this past weekend, and it was fun. It goes around the lake every 15 minutes, so the wait is minimal. We went to the top deck to look out and see the "fake" wildlife and chief, Indian village, etc. This is my first time discovering that there is a Tom Sawyer Island right in the middle of the lake and you can actually visit it! In all my many visits to Disneyland, I've never been on this boat. Why? Because I get seasick. Why? Because the lines are long? Why? Because I'm a dork. We decided to give it a try one visit, and boarded with our cups of coffee right before they "took off". The boat is huge, though it gets crowded quickly, and there aren't a whole lot of places to sit. The great thing about this attraction is that there's so much to see. The bad thing about this attraction is that there's so much to see. We found a spot along the rail on the top deck, on the starboard side (that's the left side, for all you landlubbers out there). Once the boat gets moving, a recording comes on over the speakers telling you what to be on the lookout for. It's kind of like being on the Disneyland Railroad, except you're on the water, and if you're not close to a speaker, it can be hard to hear. That's really my biggest gripe - that if you're on the top deck, and anywhere near the "smoke stacks", you're not going to be able to hear the narrator talking to you. All you'll hear is the steam escaping the stacks and the people around you talking their heads off. Anyway, if you position yourself correctly, and if you're not afraid to move from starboard to port and back, you can hear the story and see the things that are being pointed out to you. Another good point - they don't sweep the boat between launches. We were able to find a bench on the port side (right side, yo) before they let the next group in, and it made the next trip around the lagoon that much better. read more

It's been a while since I've been on the Mark Twain Riverboat. Part of the reason is because the attractions on the Rivers of America have been non-operational for the better part of a year and a half. The Mark Twain was stationary and you could board to explore and stay out of the heat but it's definitely better when it makes its circular voyage around Tom Sawyer's Island. The riverboat has been an attraction at Disneyland since its opening day in 1955. It was originally called the Mark Twain Steamboat but it was the first functional riverboat built in the United States since 1905. It's a leisurely voyage on the Rivers of America which is a great escape from a busy day at Disneyland. I definitely duck in if the crowds are large or if it's particularly sunny out. If the third level is open, go up and check out the view. read more

Such a nice and leisurely ride on the waters ar the original Disneyland. It's amazing how spotless it is kept besides all the traffic of people that it transports. Be sure to use your most polite and "Southern Charm", for there is a beautiful princess on board. She is ready to mesmerize you with her natural beauty that radiates from her warming eyes and smile. The Mark Twain Riverboat is as good as it gets at Disneyland. It is the best of both worlds...it is a grand adventure that you do not get at other theme parks and best of all you usually do not have to wait long to depart on your journey! My favorite spot in the boat is on the third (top) level. Why spend your trip through the Rivers of America on the bottom level that is the same height as the sidewalk around the river? Being on the top level affords you an AMAZING view of New Orleans Square, Frontierland and Critter Country. It is the perfect spot to take pictures of the park and have pictures taken of your party. The ride itself is somewhat uneventful compared to some of the attractions in the immediate area. Heck within walking distance you can be a pirate or meet up with ghosts in a mansion. The Mark Twain is less about excitement and more about the overall experience. You get the chance to wave at an American Indian chief, observe an American Indian village and check out a pioneer cabin. Where else can you find all that in a 15 minute journey? It takes you longer to go to the store...and you see no Indian villages on the way to Wal-Mart. There is something really magical about the whole Mark Twain Riverboat attraction. Also the best thing of all... Short line, long ride. You do not get much better than that. :0) read more
