I feel pretty silly stating the obvious here, but being located in a posh area does not equal good service; if anything, it's sure to get you the opposite. I walked in during lunchtime on a Thursday, and there was a relatively low number of people. Most of the tables were reserved, but the waitress said that if I was willing to be out within the hour, she could get me a table. I agreed, and she situated me in a cozy table nestled in a corner with a decent view of the street... and then, forgot about me. Given that I had only been given an hour, I quickly perused the menu- it wasn't hard, as the lunch menu only has a few items on it- and waited. And, then waited some more. Nearing the 15-minute mark, I was both baffled and worried, as I watched my waitress socializing with some guys that walked in after me and served them each some beers, oblivious to my hungry stares from the corner. Just as I was about to give up and walk out, she finally noticed me waiting and took my order. Honestly, from what I remember of the menu, it was all slightly-upscale bar food, beer, and a small selection of wines and cocktails . I ordered the Bird In A Box meal for £12, expecting to get 2-3 pieces of fried chicken and some fries; but, to my surprise, there were between 10-12 pieces, literally, in a box, all nestled on a bed of fries. The chicken wasn't bad, but it wasn't much different from you'd get at a KFC. The fries, I have to admit, were pretty darn good; perfectly crispy. The chicken was all drumsticks and wings, so it wasn't overly-filling, but seeing as fried chicken and fries don't reheat well, I would only order this one to share, if I were you. The prices for lunch were decent, overall, but I can't speak for the dinner portion of the day. Booze-wise, it's all pretty standard, but if you're not picky with your alcohol, it is a rather nice patio to lounge in. I would book ahead, though, as it might get busy later on in the day. The location isn't bad, but if you're in a rush, I would recommend going to one of the other joints in the area. read more

What a great place to catch up with friends! Comfy booths, plenty of light and such a central location. Only a block from Oxford street, and yet plenty of space until the early evening on a Sat night. More of a locals destination. They take a break from food service from 5-6 then convert to a tapas style shared dining experience. 5 choices for 20 pounds is a good way to go with surprisingly delicious and plentiful baby Cumberland sausages, calamari, chili fries or wedges and more. While many places are dark and crammed, market place makes great use of large windows and a nice outdoor patio. Certainly worth checking out if you're in the area and looking for a nice place to spend a few hours. read more

We went for brunch on a sunny day after church, sitting at one of their outdoor tables. The food was decent, although nothing spectacular. I had a small plate of calamaris and sweet potato fries, which were good. My fiancée had the full English breakfast, of which the bacons were the best. Service was really good. The server was prompt and kind. The restaurant is situated in a small off-street from the main busy street, so great for a moment of respite, especially if the weather is nice and if you can get a table outside. read more

More than the place itself, I believe that the location of this bar is more impressive. Located right behind Oxford Street, two steps away from Topshop, this is the ideal bar to stop by for lunch or a well deserved drink. There is also a heated terrace at the front allowing you to stop for a drink outside, whatever the weather. The inside of the bar is entirely covered in wood. I enjoy the smell of the wood as you walk in, and there is a good amount of seating inside. I would not recommend heading here on a Friday afternoon since it is full of post-work drinkers and seats will be hard to find. read more

So I go here with two mind sets lunch and after work drinks. First important bit lunch. :) Their food is really good, they take classic dishes, sausage and mash, burger, steak and salmon and add a personal twist. I have had the burger and it is a really good handmade juicy burger, with cheery tomato dressing and thick chips (maybe a little too thick, for some). Sausage and mash.. lovely Merguez sausage which is like and creamy mash with a little yorkie on the side. Today as its Christmas I had the Turkey special with all trimmings and even the sprouts were nice.. a really good dish. All in all excellent food and good for business lunch in a nice relaxed atmosphere, the menu never changes but every time you order a dish its as good as the previous time.. the chef clearly cares about what he is doing here. Well priced around 8-10 pound for lunch, and today got a little Christmas shot for free :) I also go here for after work drinks and it spills out into the market place square and a good crowd of people turn up.. They do a Adnams SpinDrift which is my favourite drink.. they do cocktails too.. but never had one but they look good. They also have a downstairs bar which is sometimes open or available for private hire. Outdoor seating ad heating in the winter. In the evening they do sharing snacks which are equally well prepared. The staff are great during the day (Daisy, you are lovely ;) ) but the poor guys get a little rushed in the evenings as this place gets mega busy after work, and it can take a little while to get severed, but that's OK as everything else is good.! Watch your bags outside this area is ripe with bag thieves.. not just here but also in other bars round here. I have seen it happen. But just be wise and you will be OK. read more

How has no one reviewed this? I stopped by here on Friday with a couple colleagues after work and the place was packed (inside and out). I was told it's always like that. We fought through the lines for a couple beers (pickup a couple at the bar at a time to save the lineup) and headed outside where there's a nice courtyard type area to stand and have a drink. I went here today for the first time for lunch and it was really good. There wasn't any tables on the ground floor so we had to eat downstairs which felt a little bit like eating in a nightclub but we didn't really mind. They do a lunch special until 4.30 during the week and 7p.m at the weekends. It has a range of lunch mains for £5. I had a salad with spinach, butternut squash, pine nuts, blue cheese and croutons. It was really delicious and unexpectedly came with a plate of bread and lovely olive oil which was an added bonus. My friend got an organic chicken burger with chips, I tried some of the chips and they were perfection; chunky and crispy. The decor is cool too, all wooden tables, benches and panelling like a ski cabin, even the DJ box is paneled. They have funny things spray painted onto the wood two hidden around the place, my favourite was the air vent that had "new air" spray painted onto it, pointless but a nice touch. The service was really quick, you order at the bar and they deliver it over. I did find the bar woman looking very bored and staring at the patrons quite a lot though which is a bit unsettling. Next time I will sit upstairs in the natural light and order the same again, it was delicious and the perfect amount for lunch. read more

This is a fairly trendy bar in an area with a serious dirth of anything resembling hip hangouts. Nicely located on a bustling but manageable square north of the hellishness that is oxford street, market place caters for the after-work party crowd. You can guarantee a fairly good time here nearly every night of the week and it manages to draw a good line between a comercial and more underground music policy. The food isn't bad - latin-american and mediterranean mostly - and very well-priced. They've got a good selection of drinks, especially bottled beers. The only draw back is that, for some reason, it always smells a bit stale inside? Or maybe that's just me.. read more

If you don't know this already, then this is probably one of my first reviews that you are reading (welcome,) because I bang on about this all the time. I hate visiting places where when I leave, I smelling like a chippy. Sadly I did after my visit to Marketplace. However, I didn't hate it here. I was invited to join some friends and some friends of friends for some festive drinks! I had just finished some Christmas shopping so I was gasping! I ordered a mojito which surprisingly wasn't to shabby. I am always so astonished at how a cocktail that is so simple to make, is ofter made so appallingly. I have been know to not only send a drink back, but get behind the bar and give a tutorial whilst making it myself! I didn't eat there (despite how I smelt) but from the aromas in the air and what I saw, I presume the menu is made up of the standard bar / pub grub. The upstairs bar is rather small but I did notice that it had a pretty attractive outdoor patio, with large front wall size doors that open out onto it. I didn't make it downstairs but I understand that it's offers a club style atmosphere. I think I will return to this little spot when it warms up and the door are more likely to be open. Take advantage of the extra space and enjoy it's convenient location just off of Oxford Street. read more

Haven't eaten here yet, so this is (so far) just for the drinking and dancing experience, but so far so good. This is one of the only places I've been to in London that plays hip hop on the dance floor, and often it's classic hip hop (for all you Americans out there, you'll love it!). Upstairs you'll find some great German beer on tap with plenty of seating (although it's often busy so get there early if you want a table). Head downstairs and you can dance until late (bottled beer only after 11pm though). During the week you can mingle between the upstairs bar and the downstairs dance floor, but on the weekends they close the door between them, and you have to enter the downstairs through a secondary outdoor entrance. Good for a group if you're all heading different directions at the end of the night since it's right by Oxford Circus. read more

Cool bar for after work drinks. I have never eaten here, so cannot comment on the food, but when there is a spot of sunshine outside, this place is the best place to be! Downstairs is OK, but a bit dark and can smell a bit odd (I think its the wood as another reviewer noted) so i would advise the lighter, brighter, upstairs.NOTE ,in summer, this bar gets VERY crowded outside, so make sure you order either double rounds of drinks at the bar OR buy wine in bottles, it will save you having to que. read more

It's rather strange to have a bar made out of wood, in fact, the place is pretty much just wood and as a result it smells like it which is neither good nor bad, but the food there is great for a casual lunch in the middle of the week. The chips and burgers are really good and the tables are usually quite spacious. Coffee and hot drinks are quite nice however I've never gone for drinks there in the evening as it's usually bursting full of people, and a bit too crowded for my liking.I like the tables in the basement, which slot into mini-arches underneath the top floor, however if you're a large party, it can difficult to squeeze in and out as they're not exactly spacious. I came here on a Friday evening. From the outside, it looked super busy so I was expecting it to be packed inside. I was wrong. There was only a handful of people upstairs, and even less down in the basement level. It did fill up a little as the night went on. I'd say drinks are reasonably priced. The food on offer is also pretty good - you can get three small plates for £13.50. I chose the crispy squid, the potato wedges and the lamb skewers - all of which were yummy. For the time that I was there, the music by the DJ wasn't all that. I left just before 11, so I don't know if the music got any better after that. read more

Right behind the massive Topshop on Oxford Street it's no surprise this place is often rammed at the weekend with a whole mish mash of people. The main attraction in the summer especially is the large, heated seating area outside which post 5pm is full of office workers furiously backing wine...and what a good selection of wine they have. Market Place basement also has a number of longstanding and popular residencies that pull in a good weekend crowd. The only noticeable drawback I've noticed each time has been at the weekends with the constantly obnoxious security staff. I know bouncers aren't known for being the most likeable but the ones employed here have the great combination of power hungry authority and being a bit thick. read more

Only 3 stars, and this is because of my recent visits here. First they seem to be trying to turn into one of those glam obnoxious clubs asking for booking etc and girls bs to get in. None the less they still have some of that nice positive vibe that is just contagious once you're inside. The music is great for a night out and I love the casual dress code for somewhere in central. read more

I used to be a big fan of Marketplace but not ever since its recent refurbishment. The crowd has completely changed and the staff now only pay attention to the absolute idiots who have bought a table. Its really lost its relaxed and cool atmosphere. Such a shame read more
