Market Square is such a cute spot in the heart of downtown Knoxville. I walked through this space a few times while staying in the area. The pedestrian mall is so nice and creates a unique oasis in the heart of the city. There are benches, tables, trees, sculptures, and a water fountain that can be enjoyed as a splash pad. I saw they were setting up for a market of some kind when I was getting ready to leave town on a weekday morning. I'm sure they have lots of events here. There are lots of options for dining and some shopping right in the immediate square. It was a bustling and energetic spot that reminded me of the Church Street Marketplace in Burlington, VT and the downtown area of Boulder. If I lived in the area I feel like I would be here often. I did not realize this existed until we were trying to find the Knoxville Chocolate Company. My were we surprised! A lively area with shops, restaurants, bars, etc. it's probably slammed during the football games, but it's a great place to send an afternoon. What really moved me was the Women Suffrage statue. Market Square is the place to be. It's the heart of the farmer's market during Summer and Winter. It's the scene during any festival, fair, or parade. Chances are, you'll run into friends old and new here. And there are always good restaurants to be found. There is plenty of variety in cuisine too. The shops are fun and friendly. And there's a lot of history written in the square. Literally. A lot of people don't realize but if you look down at your feet you'll find historical tid-bits about the square etched in concrete. Some date back to the 1700s. It's so cool to stroll around on history. Market Square is super kid-friendly and dog friendly. You'll enjoy musicians on every corner. Feel free to sit and chat with them or even dance! In the summer the water splash pad comes alive so the kiddos chill out of the heat. Krutch Park nearby is an easy stroll to pass through too. I don't know. There is something about Market Square that transforms people to feel young again. To forget what time of day it is. It sounds cheesy. But it's true. I've been to a number of markets and squares around the country and hands-down this one is best. The size is just big/small enough that you feel like a real neighbor part of a close community. Because, well, you are. Something else? Market Square is the reason I moved to Knoxville. I'm serious! I was passing through several years ago and we spent the afternoon walking through downtown Knoxville. We decided to spend the morning and early afternoon in Knoxville on our way back to Nashville after a few days in the Smokies. In the afternoon, we decided to wander around Market Square before finding a place to eat for lunch. Market Square is a charming square in the center of Knoxville with a dozen or more restaurants and shops. There were musicians playing in the square, and there was a painter painting a holiday mural on a wall in the square. Market Square has to be my favorite place to hang out in Knoxville. I moved to Ktown last fall and got to spend a few weeks people watching in the Square before it got too cold to do that. I have been able to resume that hobby this spring and it has been nothing short of fantastic. Market square is a pedestrian mall in downtown Knoxville. The Square is surrounded by good restaurants (although a handful of the restaurants leave a lot to be desired), really unique shopping and bars. Most of the restaurants have outdoor seating available, which is wonderful when the weather is nice. I believe that all the restaurants also allow pets on their patio. My dogs love to come to the square with me. It is the perfect place to socialize with people and other pets. There is an interactive fountain in the middle of the Square and it is wonderful to watch kids and adults play in it. There is a beautifully renovated hotel on the Square (The Oliver Hotel), which also happens to house probably my favorite bar in the world (Peter Kern Library). You have to visit the PKL when you are downtown. Can't overemphasize that. There is a pretty big stage at one end of the Square used for live music and plays. Jazz on the Square and Concerts on the Square are held on this stage Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the spring/early summer. I am looking forward to going to see Shakespeare on the Square later this summer. I have also heard about free movies on the Square on Fridays in the summer. You can count on seeing me there when that picks up. Don't forget the seasonal Farmer's market on Wednesday and Saturday. As well as the open air iceskating rink in the winter. And the endless activities that occur during the year, like the Monsanto GMO protest this afternoon. Multiple festivals also take place in and around the Square. Like the recent International Biscuit Festival. Market Sqaure is only a short walk away from Gay Street, recently named one of the top 10 "Great streets in America" Market Square is a must visit for residents and visitors alike. Don't forget free parking in the public garages after 6 during the week and all day on the weekends. I am glad I can't afford to live downtown. It has saved me from regularly calling in sick to work :) read more

I plan on moving to Knoxville in about 1-2 years, because this place has literally everything I value. I visited the Market Square today, and it really helped to make my decision quite a bit. It was beautiful, with amazing shops (my favorite is Earthbound and the little coffee/tea shop), a public art park, plenty of greenery, water bowls all over the place for dogs, water fountains for people and one below for animals, and fountains for kids to run through and play. It was gorgeous and peaceful. There were a few people playing music for cash too, and they sounded great! You could argue that Market Square is the center of the action in Knoxville.
