What a fun store! I love that they are pet friendly! It was nice to be able to visit a new area and be able to take my pup in with me. Mast General store is larger than meets the eye. There is an entire downstairs that offers clothing brands like Columbia, Vuori, and more! There is some camping gear and camping shoes. It was an unexpected surprise to find that section. Above, there is a selection of clothes, candies, gifts, and other goods to look at. It is fun to walk the store and see everything they had to offer. I was looking for a Christmas ornament. They did have some, but they were generic. I wanted something more specific to the area. There is a parking garage nearby. The area is super busy and you may have to walk a ways to get to the store. Lots to look at on first floor and below. On the first floor, we looked at men's and women's clothing - regular price and 25% off. We wandered through the candy ($12 a pound) and kitchen area. We found and bought a bird feeder bell with holder for a bird loving friend. Near the register, we bought some stickers - 2 free and 2 for $4 each. Downstairs are the shoes and camping gear & clothing. Huge selection!! We haven't been camping in a long time, but we could be tempted to go again by all we saw! Cashier was friendly and efficient. This store is so cute! They have a lot of vintage style toys that you most likely will not see in any other places. One of my favorite things is the world's smallest toys and they have a good selection of them, but it's weird that they range in price from $5-$10. Well, I didn't find any masts....but they had darn near everything else!!! I think I lost like 40 minutes wondering around the candy and food area alone but luckily my husband prevented me from purchasing way, way more than I could ever eat. I have been in several Mast General Store locations and this was just as clean and the staff friendly as the other locations. It was on a main downtown street with lot parking and street parking. Mast General Store is great in that it has tourist / local items to buy but also some that anyone would love to get at good prices. The candy section at Mast is huge and full of sweet treats. Mast General Store was originally built as a small room in 1882 by Henry Taylor, and opened as a store in 1883. It does honor the saying that this is 'the store that has everything"! Mast is a 5 star experience. I live in West Knoxville and, for me, it would be more convenient to just go to REI or some other outdoor place. But, if I can get downtown, I prefer Mast over the others. Especially for outdoor clothing like Fjallraven, Kuhl, Smartwool, etc. Prices are competitive too -- particularly when they have sales. Their sales are much better than what you see elsewhere for these top brands. Now, for the hardcore people: This isn't a full outfitter with bikes, skis, and all the outdoor gear. It's mainly clothing with some camping gear and shoes. But, it has a nice mix. Even if you are doing a full Appalachian trail hike or planning out gear for doing a month of skiing, Mast probably has a few things you'd want. Other than the clothes, they have a really fun general store with random eclectic items. Also, bins of candy and old-timey kids toys. Good "Knoxville" themed souvenirs too. What a great store this is! It was near closing time when we made our way in, so we tried to look at as much as possible in the 15 minutes we had. The designs of their men's T-shirt's were really neat. My hubby had a hard time deciding which shirts to get because there were so many interesting prints. I found some wonderful souvenirs including an amazing retro style tea towel map of Tennessee. I love that a place like this still exists. I am obsessed with shops like this. It reminds me of a Cracker Barrel store on steroids. HUGE, somewhat overwhelming, but some unique and fun finds. While there are Knoxville souvenirs, know that it is not just the cheesy, cheap kind that will fall apart on your car ride in .5 seconds. There are some high-quality, locally made goods. Food, attire, and and entire lower floor devoted to outdoor adventure lovers (camping gear and essentials, etc). This is a really nice general store that was much larger than expected. My family and I walked in here Saturday afternoon not really expecting too much to be honest and I was blown away about how large this place really is. It had so many things to look at from closed gadgets to shoes to knickknacks to candy everything in the world it was like a old throwback type of store and we all really enjoyed it tremendously. It was a really cool novelty type store that was very crowded there were a lot of people there for sure. This is a old timey, has a little bit of everything kind of store. Odd and ends you would see at a general store normally but different. They have a HUGE candy selection. Some candies that are hard to find from decades ago! It comes by the piece or pound. Traditional tourist stuff but also a lot that isn't. Regular clothes with or without local logo. The staff at each of their stores I have visited have been nice and helpful . I went hog wild in Mast General Store! I bought everything from a rain coat to pickles. And I could've spent more! It's conveniently located in downtown Knoxville, within walking distance of Market Square and a definite must-do if you're in that area. It's unlike any store I've ever been into, so to describe it, just wouldn't give it justice. It's not exactly what I would call a souvenir store, but probably one of the best places in the state to find souvenirs. They sell a lot of regional, hard to find items as well. The pottery that they sell is very under priced. I bought a hand-warmer mug for $19.99. They come in both right hander and left hander versions. Every time that I take my mug out in public, someone comments on it and asks where I got it. Which prompted me to post this review today, even though it's a few months over due. read more

They have so many candies and sweets here! We are visiting this weekend from the Midwest so were pleased to see Moon Pies, Cheerwine soda, and Mallo Cups, which are usually hard to find. This is one of our favorite stores for outdoor gear and wear! Whenever we're in Downtown, we make a visit, they always have interesting items from local foods, cookbooks, boots, socks, and jewelry. All I can say is be prepared to be their for hours!! The clothes selection is absolutely wonderful! I bought 3 sweaters and 2 comfy sweatshirt. My husband who hates to shop bought 2 sweatshirts and 1 long sleeve comfy tshirt. I wanted some jewelry but thought I had done enough damage! Then we found their downstairs section...woozah do they have options! I also picked up some straps for my ENO portable hammock that I have wanted forever. So happy to find them! I was asking if they carry a specific brand and make of knife. I was quickly informed not carry that brand. I then asked if they carried any knives that were designed to be "scout carry ". I don't know how I have a junior at UT and have never been here. I absolutely love good General Stores and this one did not disappoint. There is just nothing like being able to go into a store and find some of the most random things you never knew you needed until you see them. Seriously, they had bonnets for cats. Who wouldn't want that...and I don't even have a cat (but surely I know someone who does that I can gift this bad boy to). The upstairs is clothes in the front (super cute UT stuff you won't find anywhere else), in the back there are toys, decor, odds and ends, food options etc. Downstairs made me want to work here (I can't b/c the commute from Jacksonville, FL is just too far every day). Outdoor lovers beware, they have everything here. Absolutely everything. And not all of the high priced stuff...they carry options in every price range. Quality options!! Service was awesome. I love this place! Walking in is like taking an immediate time jump. Old-timey soda, vintage candy barrels, the smell of popcorn. They have a large selection of Mast-brand products, from candy to cooking to beauty. A lot of the items you'll find here are locally made or hand crafted in the south and are full of character. The store is also dog-friendly for leashed pups. The store is sprawling! Don't miss out on the downstairs level, which is the outdoorsman's dream! They will have some great sales from time to time, and we've gotten Northface and Columbia jackets for a steal. While the merchandise is a bit slow to change, something about Mast always keeps us coming back. We've found it's a great time killer when you're downtown waiting on a dinner table. read more

As the name suggests, Mast General Store is, well, a general store. Think back to playing Oregon Trail on an old-school Mac and you will picture is just right. The store balances practicality with nostalgia, and even though it's somewhat kitschy, the old-timey vibe seems to fit in just right with its location on Gay Street. We came in just to have a look around - there seems to be most everything you need here, from rifles to coonskin caps, and candy to clothes. It's a bit pricey though, and more the kind of place to shop if you want to get someone something that is slightly unique or souvenir-y although without spending too much thought on it. The best part is, of course, the bulk candy bins where you can pick and choose from your favorite classics. Kids and adults alike seem to love it. Back in the day, before you had REI, CVS, Home goods etc., people would walk on down to the general store for their everyday needs. The moment you walk in, you get the feeling that you just took a trip back in time. They have anything you could possibly need. From clothing to footwear to a fun souvenir to take back for friends, this place is a must for anyone passing through downtown Knoxville. There candy selection is INSANE! They have all the candies that I would eat as child. It's $7 a lb. And you can load up on all different types of candies. I spent $20 lol! What more do you need in one place?! Every Mast General Store I've been to is always bustling with people at any given time of the year. The entry level has men's and women's clothes, and in the back there are tons of little house goodies, locally made treats, and more. There's an excellent selection of candy- even candy from many many moons ago- it's certainly a nostalgic place, at best. Take the stairs down to the basement floor and be overwhelmed with excellent outdoor clothes, shoes, and camping gear. Though it's often overpriced, they tend to have good sales too. I posted this same review at the Mast General Store in Greenville SC because they're both identical and I have nothing but good things to say about both. This place is so cute. It is very vintage and brings you back to your childhood, whether it is in the 60's or 90's. They have items that range in that many eras. This place is also huuuuge. You wouldn't think so from the outside. But it's actually 2 stories! It's located in the popular Market Square area. It's seriously one of the old school stores that has always been around. I hope they continue with good business to be keep open!! Must visit! They even have a "limited edition" candy area where you have a basket and just pick and choose what kinds you want.
