This place isn't bad at all for a regional art gallery, but then again Geelong is a city in its own…read moreright (and definitely not part of Melbourne). They had some pretty nice works here, and a decent sized collection as well. Hey, they even had some older works, something that I tend to quite appreciate. The staff were also quite helpful, and one of the great things about this place is that it is absolutely free. Yeah, I really do like free art galleries.

I went into the Ocean Grove Sewing Centre today to try and find some material for my daughter's school dress up. I had a look - couldn't see anything close to what I needed, so asked the staff member. All she could be bothered to do, was to point over to the section and tell me "whatever we have it's there". Clearly she could not be bothered helping me. It's called customer service - and in winter in Ocean Grove - when business slows down you would think most of the businesses would be at the top of their game in helping customers who want to shop local. Did I spend my money there? No. Will I again. No. Will I now share this story with loads of friends and family online? Yes.

One treasure that could very well take up a third of the place is Seaside Seconds, Anglesea's secondhand goods shop. Often found crowding with people, there is an cataloging system in place, but the simple kind (not like a 'vintage' rack or anything). This leaves you to your own devices to dig deep into the breadth of wares here. Books, CD's, Records, Kitchenware, Bric-a-Brac, Clothes, Linen, Curtains, Pictures, Jewellry, Bags, Garden Tools, Sports Gear, and Whitegoods & Appliances. I'm pretty sure I overhead one of the locals saying this is only place they go to for their shopping needs. There are some real gems and some real misses. Check out the books and madball vintage newspapers, followed closely by the sequined Justin Bieber cap in all its white and pink madness. Leave yourself an hour, you'll need it. The space is deceptively deep, with the goods located further and further into the store. Before you know it you're on the other side getting a breather, a handful of goods to be purchased.

Unfortunately the main issue is that the prices are written in permanent marker on the goods themselves, often unable to be removed. This is a ridiculous system as it basically destroys the piece. I picked up a very rare Scandinavian sugar bowl but the sharpie has gone though the glaze and ruined it. Such a shame... This practice would be understandable if the prices were incredibly cheap; but mostly they price the vintage stuff over and above its worth. I've never seen an op-shop with this permanent marker approach to pricing - please buy some cheap sticker labels. That said, there is sometimes a few good items, sometimes nothing but the staff have always been very lovely and the store, whilst brimming with goods, is nearly sorted into sections. The opening hours are good too, however it is closed on Sunday. I do recommend this store for the casual browser, but if you are looking for cheap, undiscovered vintage pieces, it's not for you.

After doing some research we found Go Ride A Wave. After easily booking online we arrived at the shop and met the staff. They were happy and friendly and made me feel comfortable. Becky took us out with 2 others and taught us about the beach, currents and etiquette. After a short and educational instruction on the shore we headed out. Becky was amazing and helped us catch our first waves. She pointed out what to look for and taught us what to do. I caught so many great waves and had a blast. I would definitely go back again. Thanks for great memories and encouragement. I always felt safe in the water with Becky around.

The shop is easy to find in Torquay and street parking is easy. The staff are relaxed and nice, and will help you find a good wetsuit (if the water's a bit cold like when I went.) It is an easy stroll to the beach from HQ, and the on-sand demos and instructions make sense. Once in the water the instructors spend good time with you in a group lesson and make sure it's not frightening. It wasn't scary at all, and I met some nice girls in my group who I'm now friends with in Melbourne. I've been to other surf schools where it felt competitive and I was afraid to ask questions, and I didn't get that here at all. I felt encouraged, and even when I was tired staff kept me motivated. Initially I felt like a fish out of water, by the end I felt like a fish flying over the water. I became a lot more comfortable in the ocean and loved the feeling of riding a wave (okay, it was whitewater- but still, it was a beginning!!) Rad place to go- get the stoke with this crew in Torquay!
