I booked 4 nights at the Saintlo jail hostel and when I came downstairs after a rejuvenating nap I saw that they had a list of recommendations sitting amongst a pile of other plastic sheets. Dirienzo's - the best ITALIAN SANDWICH in the city. I'm not really an Italian sandwich sort of person normally, maybe it was contributed by the burgeoning like for cured meats that I was acquiring after eating dried salami as my only source of food for the past week or so -- but who's going to pass up the chance to try the BEST of anything? I got there after taking 2 buses and was starting to become a bit concerned. I had $40 in my account and was hitchhiking across the country -- after all it was labelled the BEST in the city and that would normally come with a hefty price tag. When I first opened the door I instantly got greeted by the guy behind the counter, which made me feel welcomed and at ease. I looked up to view the selection of sandwiches that they had on offer and potentially the cheaper ones. I was surprised to see the sign that said $10 for ANY SANDWICH!! #booyah I was finding it hard to decide on which of the sandwiches to get since they all looked so appetising, but decided on number 16. The sandwich was massive for the price that it was. The bread was a perfect mix between durable so that it wouldn't fall apart in your hands, but soft enough that it was enjoyable, with the amount of bread contemplating he rest of the fillings just the right amount. I was pretty overwhelmed to be honest with how good it was. All of the ingredients including the lettuce (which I've found is usually the first thing places will skimp out on) were extremely fresh. I put in my coworker groupchat: "Anyone coming over across Canada after the season has to make a stop in Ottawa if they aren't already just to try one of these." Accompanied by a photo of my eyes watering with glee. My Nonna is always telling me how I need to learn Italian to be more connected to our culture and I've always just kindof brushed it off since I haven't needed to use it and we don't speak it much at home, but this has made me so proud to be Italian. As I continued to eat the sandwich sitting on a bench looking towards the city and the people playing basketball in the park, I found myself contemplating staying in Canada and raising my kids here in Ottawa so that they get to experience it themselves on a warm summer afternoon after picking them up from school. It's where Life of Pi used to be and it has lots of seating and you feel like you're actually in a cafe/deli instead of inside a convenience store like their original location, lol. I've had their legendary sandwiches multiple times at their original location, so when I stopped by their new location to check it out, I just got a pastry. I got their strawberry cheesecake cannolo ($4.49) and it was fantastic. I love that they have fun flavours. They had blueberry cheesecake cannoli too. If you're more of a purist, don't worry they have original plain cannoli as well. The pastry was crispy even though it was prefilled. It had a nice strawberry flavour. Staff were pleasant. If I'm in the mood for a sandwich and I'm in the area, I would not hesitate to stop in for a sandwich, as the deli set up looked very similar to the original location on Pleasant Park. I ordered their Wham Burger! since that seems to be their signature. It came out pretty quickly and looked amazing. The patties were sticking out over the edge, cheese nice and melted and the toasted bun was great. This burger despite being so big and seemingly messy held together great. Their Wham sauce is really good. I devoured this burger and wanted to get another. One of the better burgers I have had in awhile.

I remember it being ok, but not anything I ever craved. I was recently poking around on UberEats while at my parents' house in Orleans and saw that Pita Pit had a BOGO deal for their bowls. I love the not-so-new-anymore bowl trend, and since I hadn't been to a Pita Pit in so long, I figured, why not? So I got the Small Ancho Chicken and Black Bean Bowl for $12.51 (for 2 bowls since it was buy one get one free). I ordered it for pick up and it was ready in 9 minutes. The bowls were really small and shallow, and they didn't even fill the bowl, so even at BOGO, I didn't feel like it was much of a deal, and I would have been pretty unhappy had I paid regular price. However, the taste of the bowls wasn't bad. The amount of protein was minimal, but the chicken pieces that were there were lean and tasty (not dry). The black beans were actually a black bean patty, cut up. It had black beans, corn and some grains inside. It added nice texture to the bowl. The rice was nicely cooked and the spinach, tomatoes and green peppers were fresh. The hot banana peppers were spicy and the tiny spoonful of guacamole was good. There was also a miniscule amount of grated cheddar cheese in the bowl. I asked for the sauces on the side, and my request was accommodated. The chipotle sauce was creamy and delicious with just a bit of kick. The hot sauce added more kick, lol. Service was courteous and efficient. Pickup was quick and everything was well packaged. I'm glad to see that Pita Pit branched out from their original days of just serving pita wraps. However, I feel the same way about it now as I did 20 years ago: it's OK. This location is in a shopping plaza. Same plaza as Food Basics, Kardish, Cold Stone Creamery and Saigon Pho. There's a movie theatre and a Toys R Us in the plaza too. But everything is made fresh to order and they have a nice assortment of add-ons you can have on your burger, many of which have no additional cost (you only pay extra for cheese and bacon). The food quality is really good as well. The gravy is really delicious and has a nice consistency. And the serving sizes for the fries and onion rings are very generous. They also have some really interesting poutine toppings, including pepperoni, steak, pogo, hot dogs, and donair meat. There is plenty of outdoor seating on the large patio/deck area, or you can sit inside on the upper level of the bus. As a bonus, it shares a parking lot with the Innes Road Golfland, so if you feel like having a game of mini golf after lunch, or taking advantage of their driving range, it couldn't be more convenient.
