One of my favorites, not just in Ohio, but across the United States. Owner Arnie, beloved to many, including fellow wineries local to Grand River is spoken of with great love. Every time I visit, almost every one has an Arnie story to share! Years ago- a friend and I stumbled upon this gem, it was just he and I - and Arnie! This delightful man gave us the tasting of a lifetime! He brought out some special, extra rares HE enjoyed (that he chose to share... just because, hey, good wine is to be shared!) He made us feel so welcomed, I noted Markko as one of my all time faves. In the spring of this year, Markko has a blessing of the vines- I attended with my elderly pup Zoe (17 years) who also shared in the blessings of these happy vibes. The large group toasted to Arnie's memory, and everyone was choked up. His loss reached far and wide. Mastered now by his family, this beautiful, welcoming winery opens its arms to all in its peaceful, rustic, charming space hidden amongst the trees. But don't be fooled by its seclusion- at the heart is some of the most spectacular wine you'll ever try! The Cabernets here are my go to, although the Chardonnay's are distinctfully impressive, each year has notes which stand alone, and you can't pick a single favorite! You'll see yourself - finding this one because it's creamier finish and that one because it's apricot tones are wonderful for hot days and then, and then... Yes that's it! It goes on and on! This last visit, I tried the new Cabernet (blackberry jam right at the front note!), 2021 Chardonnay, Rose' and Pinot Noir. These were lovely- the Rose' was our group's pick- and a surprise choice, as my one friend and I are not typical Rose' drinkers! We *Loved* this one!! The entire group voted for the 2019 Cabernet, in fact, two bottles were consumed post Rose'! That happens a lot here! Each tasting will tell a story. This place is not just a winery or a vineyard, but a legacy. A tribute to a humble, friendly wine master, who through his family, and friends- lives on in each new glorious creation. At closing each day (as we have done more than a few times because time here just stops!) if you listen carefully, you might just hear Arnie's laughter amongst the trees. read more

This is one of our favorite wineries in northeast Ohio. It is located off the beaten path down a gravel road. They have flights, a cheese board and make amazing wine. The chardonnay is one of my absolute favorite if you enjoy dry wines. I highly recommend stopping by to visit and trying some wines. You will not be disappointed. read more

3 stars for location. It's hard to find, and a little creepy once you find it. BUT, the wine was really good!! We only had a wine flight. And left with a bottle of one of the best Cabernets we've ever had! read more

The pinnacle of Ohio wineries!! Only serious wine drinkers need apply though. If you're one of the many faux wino's walking around Vintage Ohio with your glass on a necklace raving about all the yummy sweet wines, please don't bother coming here. If, however, you enjoy serious wines, complex and flavorful Pinot Noirs, and big meaty Cab Sauvs(yes, from OHIO!), then this is your mecca. I've visited most of the Northeast Ohio wineries over the past 6 years. Many as part of the wine courses I took in college(yes I earned college credits for drinking wine, so suck it :-p). And others on my own wine tasting trips. My taste in wine quickly graduated to the big, strongly flavored heavy hitters like Cabernet Sauvignon. I want a wine with so much body that it needs to be chewed, tannins that tingle the tongue and strong flavors that are still lingering 5 minutes after a sip. So it didn't take long to outgrow most of the Ohio wines and wineries. Then I went to Markko. Their wines are generally in the $20-40 range, which is expensive for Ohio, but well worth it. The older lady who does the tastings is very nice and knowledgeable and willing to talk freely about the wines if you can walk the walk and talk the talk. If you roll in like a giddy, half drunk tourist she may seem short in conversation and hospitality. All part of the charm of this hidden gem. The first time I was here was prob. 3 years ago with my aunt. We each bought a bottle of different vintage Cab Sauvs. On our most recent visit I wasn't that impressed with the current vintages that they were selling. She was actually able to look us up in their computer and find what vintages we had bought 3 YEARS AGO! and then dig up bottles from those years for us, even though they weren't on their list of wines for sale anymore. Very cool!! Bottom line, if you like serious wines, make the pilgrimage and ignore the slightly trashy exterior. Treasures lie within. read more

Markko is simply an outstanding winery. It could be a bit hard to find and may look somewhat run down, but do not judge the book by its cover. It had the best wines we tasted in the Northeastern Ohio area. And, the owners were very friendly and genuine. One of the best wineries I have been to, and I think it surpasses any winery in the area we have been to so far. The tastings were plentiful and delicious. A red wine drinker myself, I enjoyed the white ones quite a bit, and ended up getting two bottles of their select reserve chardonnay. Their pinot noir is also worth a try, and was second on my list. You gotta go there, do a tasting, and get some bottles of wine to really experience it. Do not forget to pet the good old doggies before you drive away... read more

Best quality wine of any Ohio vineyard we have been to. Everything we tried was stellar. Most of their wines are on the dry side, bucking the Ohio trend towards sweet wines. The tasting room is pleasant and intimate. The service was phenomenal, with the founding winemaker spending substantial time chatting with us about his vineyard's history and goals. We walked away happy (and with a case!). Recommended to call ahead to verify they are open. Very small operation. Drive there may make you feel like you're lost for a little bit. read more

I adore this winery!! Markko's is well off the gravel road & from the outside it doesn't like a winery. Don't be afraid of the dogs either! They really are gentle giants. This is the best Chardonnay you will ever drink. Arnie the owner/vintner was there talking about the wine & how he got his start in the biz. He is very interesting to talk to. He has several vintages to taste & buy. I had a hard time choosing which Chardonnay was my fav. Hope you will try them soon! read more

Amazing winery! Arnie knows his stuff and has been making wine longer than most in Ohio! An absolute must for any connoisseur of great wine!

Several friends of mine and I visited this winery during a local wine tour. When pulling up, we were confused as to whether or not we were actually at a winery or someones personal home. It's in the middle of the woods and pretty run down looking. There are dodgy picnic tables in the lawn as well as various rusty tools and chains hanging on the walls. We finally located a sign that confirmed we were at Markko. Despite the sketchy first impression we went in and ordered some bottles, hoping that it would turn out to be an interesting and eccentric experience. It was-- just not in a good way. The vintners seemed a bit put out that we were there, despite our ordering several bottles and glasses of wine. There was no tasting area that we could see and all of the seating was outdoors on the picnic tables (which was also seemed to be a parking lot of sorts) or on a porch. There were several large dogs and even more large puppies of some herding breed running around. They were tolerable. . .until they attacked a small dog that another patron brought. Neither dog owners cared to break up the fight, the vintners just yelled at the other dog owner who seemed too shocked to act. A member of our party ran into the fray to avoid seeing a bloodbath during a wine tour. After all this we finally had a chance to sample our wine. Perhaps it was influenced by our experiences, but the Riesling was too bitter for my tastes. We left without even finishing our glasses. Maybe there was a good wine to be found there, but the ambiance was so seriously lacking (and dangerous!) that we didn't want to stay to find out. read more

Great wine! Rustic location with fantastic sparkling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. It is well worth the drive for a visit.

Introduced to this Vineyard at the North Market Wine Tasting. My husband and I met the Vintner and was impressed at his friendliness. We are not Chardonnay wine lovers but really liked the 2010 Vintage and bought a bottle. I was not impressed by the Pinot Noir....but you don't always like every winery's version of your store favorite. That's the art of wine making. read more

We have been coming to Markko for over 20 years enjoying wine. We last visited at a Blessing the Vines and Perch fry. The '10 Homage Chardonnay Reserve came in and is available at $33 - wonderful. Arnie and Linda are great to the wine lovers who prefer the drier vinatages - Chardonnay, Pinot, Cabernet and Rieslings. They usually have some cheeses. Sometimes we bring our own bread, cheese and snacks to enjoy with the wines. Nice picnic tables and patio. read more

Markko is a treasure. All 100% estate grown wines. The Chardonnay and Cabernet are the best in Ohio, in my opinion. Worth the drive.
