Brought my guitar to be set up. It took a few weeks as they were "backed up" when I did receive my guitar a few weeks later it had some fret "buzz" I had to bring it in for them to adjust it. I then brought my Bass to them to get some pickups re wired. It took the tech a few more weeks as well. He said he couldn't find my "wiring diagram" anywhere online & was having trouble wiring it. After a few weeks I get a message my bass "is ready" upon getting it back & plugging it I noticed it was considerably quieter than with the stock pickups it once had, also there is an odd noise when you turn the volume knobs ( maybe not grounded properly) I messaged them to complain & have not heard from them at all to whether they can resolve this issue! read more

I have such a love/hate relationship with this store. They typically have some really great instruments in stock, but their customer service consistently gets 1 Star in my book. They love to talk down to their customers like they're 10 year olds that don't know how to hold a guitar. If you need some help, they grunt and groan like you're asking the world out of them. I'm used to feeling this way at Guitar Center, but I'd like to expect more out of this store... though if I'm gonna get treated the same at both places I'll go ahead and save the 10-20% less you'll pay at Guitar Center. went in to look at guitars. Was interested in a few. They said they could check to see if I prequalify. I made it very clear that I was not applying for a card, nor did I want one. They said they were just doing a pre approval. A couple days later I was hit with a notice that they did a hard pull on my credit. A day after that I was notified that I have a new card. WTH? I wanted to support a local business, but not an unethical one. Additionally, they hover around you as you play and try to hard sell you. A bad experience in all ways. There were three gentlemen working when I visited including Mark himself, and they helped me find the perfect pickups for me to put into my telecaster deluxe. What coolness to find so much quality merchandise packed into a small shop!! Mark's location at Sports Arena should make every San Diegan musician's 'favorite' list. These gurus know their trade back-to-front, so it might be slightly crowded when they buzz you in--after you smile . I've purchased a decent array of goods from them, always found they stand on their word--as in offering instrument setups or pricing guarantees. I mean the supply of beautiful guitars is impressive however the staff are not friendly. Actually the fellow working this morning was angry, I just wanted a guitar stand and he barked at me. Ive been in 3 times and been met with condescending sales people every time, the guy this morning was just angry. They have very nice guitars and they're over priced as such if that wasn't enough they give you a dose of attitude for free. I had to take my Jazzmaster back to Marks 3-4 times for one problem that never got fixed at Marks. (I had to take it somewhere else to finally get it fixed) Each time I had to actively call them and ask what the status was of my instrument. Each time they told me it was fixed. I would come back in and still experience the issue. If you are serious about getting your instrument fixed, there's plenty of other places that are gonna do the job right. read more

Been searching for a new Gibson Les Paul (my first) and hit up every retailer in San Diego that was an authorized dealer. I've driven past MGE plenty of times but had never stopped in previously. Currently they're appointment-based when you're seriously trying out guitars. Matt was super helpful and knowledgeable and they had THE BEST selection of new Les Pauls (Custom Shop and Gibson USA) of any other place I visited. Couldn't quite decide on my first visit, but I also went down to the Chula Vista store because they had a nice example of the model I was after. Josh at the Chula store kindly brought that guitar up to the Midway location so I could do an A/B comparison to make the final decision. Overall I'm pleased to have bought my new Les Paul from Mark's GE - they had a fair price, did a complete set-up on the house, and offer lifetime service on the guitar. Plus I'm happy to support a brick and mortar store like this. Mark (the owner) only selects the highest quality examples, so you can be sure you're getting the best of the best. I highly recommend this place if you're looking to purchase some new music gear. read more

Very solid and surprising guitar store. While a die-hard Fender dealer, they also had a decent selection of Amps, Pedals and accessories for guitar players (new strings, etc.). They also had some nice surprises such as carrying Tagima guitars. Tagima is a Brazilian brand of guitars that are inexpensive, as well built as ANY American Guitar, look and sound really cool and are as good for the beginner as a pro musician. Very unusual brand for a small shop but Mark had them! His staff (including Mark) were friendly, engaging and there to help. If you like or are shopping for guitars (beginner or pro), this is exactly the kind of store you want to go to. It is NOT all things to all people however what it does focus on (rock and roll guitars and amps), it does VERY well. PS Be patient with parking. There are not a ton of spaces and the parking is in between Mark's Guitar and another building. Make sure you park so others can park safely as well. read more

Well, it looks like my original review was deleted by Mark's Guitar.... Same ol' same ol' when I went into the shop today-shit customer service, was ignored once they told me they didn't have it (neglected to carry on further conversation about a $5,000 acoustic.). Because I was the first person to ask about it doesn't mean I should be blown off (you carry that brand btw). I started to look around at pedals but was turned off when I heard them bad mouthing previous customers and decided to leave. Today I gave them another shot but this was it for me. They have literally lost out on the purchase of a Gibson R0, Custom Shop ES-335, and a Martin D-42 by me. I bought all of the above from other shops which appreciated my $15,000+ with at least a smile (and great customer service) which will keep me coming back. read more

EVERYTHING THEY SELL HERE YOU CAN BUY ON REVERB OR ANOTHER WEBSITE FOR HALF THE PRICE. I played a bass for 30 seconds, unplugged, and they told me to stop and put the bass down so "they can keep the guitars like new." Funny thing is I was actually going to buy a bass that day but instead I went to guitar center and got a better bass for 200 dollars. Don't go here. Prices are high, the people at the counter are worthless scumbags and the owner should break his own nose for actually thinking he's running a good business. I will be bringing my others in as well (pulling them out of non-use for a decade). I had a great experience here. I've been interested in picking up an electric guitar for a while but I don't have alot of familiarity with electric (only acoustic). The staff was very welcoming and helpful. We talked alot about musical interests, playing styles, budget, pros/cons of various set-ups, etc. Then I was given alot of time to sit down with various guitar/amp configurations and get comfortable with my choice. I'm a long time bass player but I wanted to pick up my first 6 string guitar. The staff in the shop (a young lady and gentleman who names I'm sorry to have forgotten) were incredibly kind and helpful. I picked out a Squire Jazz Master. The controls are somewhat elaborate (compared to a J Bass) and they took the time to thoroughly explain the many features. Great recommendations every step of the way. Great shop. Great experience. Mark's is so much better than buying online. I did the research and bought an amp online, and even though it got amazing reviews, I wasn't thrilled. I decided to try and learn how to play guitar this year thinking music would be a soothing hobby to get into during this $h*t-show we call 2020. I'm based in San Francisco and it seemed like most guitar stores there were still closed except for Guitar Center, and most of the reviews for that place were from disappointed customers that received poor service. While visiting family in San Diego, I found Mark's Guitar Exchange online and decided to go there to get some help picking out my first guitar. I knew NOTHING about where to start and was so nervous about going in. I learned very quickly that MGE was exactly what I was hoping for: The staff are super knowledgeable, attentive, and patient. No snobbiness or condescension. Matt showed me 3 guitars in the price range I wanted, talked in-depth about the pros and cons of each (though a lot of it was over my head), and was even able to play specific songs on each one that I said I was hoping to learn eventually so I could hear what they would sound like. I was blown away by the amount of time and care I received. I left the store even more excited to learn guitar than I already was, and had a whole kit ready to go (guitar tuned, strap attached, bag, tuner, capo, picks, polish & cloth). I don't think I could ever go to another guitar shop now. I've been playing/practicing almost everyday since I got my guitar, and it's exactly the sort of stress-relief/joy-inducing activity I hoped for. Mark wanted to make a trade for my Gibson LeGrande archtop for an Gibson Wes Montgomery L5 he had. Mark's L5 had a major lacquer crack in the front of the guitar. He had it half assed repaired so cosmetically you could not see the crack looking straight forward at the front of the guitar. But in Light and from angels you could see the crack very very well. The crack was about 12 inches long and growing longer. My Blonde Gibson Le Grande was in mint pristine condition. Mark did not disclose the fact to me that his L5 had a repaired crack. Fortunately I was able to notice the crack almost immediately. I have to wonder if Mark ever told his future buyer on this L5 that it had a crack. I would not bet my life on that. Marks prices are all retail so don't be fooled by the fact that his prices are the best. They are average at best. Mark in my opinion is a cheap used car salesman always looking to come out way ahead, never a fair trade or sale. Bottom Line, I would definitely not recommend Mark's store. read more

My bridge was super messed up and needed new screws and when I went to guitar center they said that I had to order them myself online before I could get my bridge fixed and I called Fender and they didn't know what screws I needed so I was like ... okay what should I do. But then I called into Marks Guitar Exchange and they said that they could fix it in the shop like no hesitation which was cool because I've been struggling finding the parts for it. The guy who fixed my bridge did it super fast and knew a lot about what he was doing which was amazing, and everyone working at the store was super nice and knowledgeable and seemed close with the customers :) I kinda wanna take lessons here if they have them maybe but I forgot to ask haha anyways yeah this is a cool and super useful store for sure read more
