After suffering property damage and parts loss at other shops, Repair Zone first claimed they would intake my guitars. When the time finally came around they fell through and said "we don't want any of your work". Sounds like a fake shop, most importantly when they said that over the phone they felt the need to reiterate maybe three times instead of ending the call like a normal retailer and shutting the fuck up. What a clown show. Update: Some of the other shops that Repair Zone are scared to be just like, and probably are already, have posted statements which are on Yelp (see American Music Store in Encinitas) that talk about unrelated topics like my cancer treatment and claiming meth use. Great experience with multiple guitar setups. They were able to complete a custom ephiphone Les Paul with upgraded pickups and push/pull pots that two other luthiers gave up on. Have since brought my PRS acoustic for a set up and will continue bringing other guitars. Only downside is long wait times of about a month and typically a week longer than quoted but they do great work and I've recommended them to all friends looking for setups or service. read more

For decades The Repair Zone and the name Fred have had the top reputation in my circle of musical friends, including my late mentor, surf guitar great Bob Demmon of The Astronauts. While I always enjoyed setting up my own guitars, I began to realize that the guitars I have from his estate were really really set up well and are a supreme joy to play. I recently decided to up my tube amp game and bought three Astronauts-style blonde Fenders, which were all in need of different degrees of TLC. I did what I could do myself but quickly ran into my own limitations and brought them in to be worked on by Jeff Snider, "the Tube Guy that Repair Zone Sends To." The result was a humbling and exciting glimpse into what makes great amps -- and amp techs -- tick. Jeff responded to my notes, called me, explained what he was doing, and sent videos. He did [reversible!!!] tweaks to allow biasing of the tubes, to marry the vintage circuit to the slightly mismatched (but still cool) transformers that had been replaced, to head off capacitor-related disasters, and a bunch of other very cool things. I went in with three amps I loved but wasn't confident in. I came out with three amps with three great personalities, each suited to a different need, and tweaked to its most musical potential. The greatest moment was when Jeff let me know that the normal channel of the '62 Bassman now had a "really compelling overdrive" that "F--king rules." Without messing up the "proper" pedigree of an old amp, each one came out more robust, less noisy, louder, sweeter, and tailored to my personality. Jeff is the amp champ. read more

I bought a "brand new" Gibson J45 Standard version in the iconic, "vintage sunburst" finish over 2 months ago off of eBay. It was sold through a buyer and seller who handpicks quality guitars before selling them, which is an outstanding quality of an ebay seller. Anyhoos, I enjoyed my new Gibson J45, but my action was too high and I was having trouble playing my bar chords that goes below the C# minor chord and beyond. Not fun! I found this place after being told that my Gibson had a "warped neck" from a place in Point Loma called "Mark's Guitar Exchange" and they wanted to sell me services that I don't need. Worst of all, the young man that told me so was a total, you know what. He exuded a "know it all, I'm smarter than you" attitude, so I decided elsewhere. A Yelp search found me The Repair Zone, which bear great reviews and also it's very close to my job. The guy there, forgot his name was very kind and helpful and his evaluation of my guitar's concern was much different from the rude guy at a Mark's GE. My guitar needed an action adjustment that will include filing down the saddle and raising the nut height. He offered an expedited service, which can be done by the weekend or standard service, which will be up to 3 weeks. Since, I'm in no rush, I went with the standard service. They did an EXCELLENT job on my Gibson J45, the action is way better than when I received it. Plus, the staff there compliment my guitar, that's so awesome! It sure made my day! The only drawback about them is very insignificant. The turnaround time they told me was a bit longer than expected, and also they didn't call me with updates, which was a little disappointing, but I understand they have tons of clients to serve. Other than the one drawback, I will be coming back to them with future guitar needs! read more

Brought my 1991 Fender Strat in for Fred and the gang to repair. Having played it often since buying it, the guitar needed an overhaul. Fred took a look at the guitar and told me what he thought was needed to get the guitar back to playing like it had previously. The biggest thing it needed was a re-fretting. When I returned to pick up the guitar I immediately noticed how great a job they did with putting in new frets. They were able to change out the frets without a single blemish to the finish on the fretboard. The work they need to do on the tremolo system was done equally well. I am happy to say the guitar is back to playing like it used to and all was done for a very reasonable price.
