We also experienced inappropriate interactions toward individuals within the student body from the Head of School due to a lack of detailed knowledge of students. There is also no accountability demonstrated by Woodlynde administration for inappropriate teacher interaction, nor are there attempts to resolve such differences when situations are heightened. Overall, although the school was helpful in some academic ways our experience was a school that did not honor all their principles consistently or fairly.

Rather than adapting to the unique need of a child, students are expected to fit within a predetermined box that fits the needs of administrators (&some teachers) more than the child. Since our child did not fit that box, there were incidents where our high schooler was treated unfairly. There was 0 consistency. More concerning, there was lack of support for students social/emotional well being. This culture starts with the Head of School. His leadership style comes across as egotisical and unwilling to consider other perspecitives.

One of his biggest struggles has been with school-based anxiety, to the point of being unable to get into the school building. His local, award-winning, nationally recognized public school worked mightily but ultimately could not provide him with an environment in which he could learn. We cycled through a couple of other independent schools that work with anxious kids with various levels of success, but ultimately did not work out. I learned about Fusion via a newspaper article in November of 2017, while the NMT was inpatient for the second time to keep him safe. I spoke with their school director, hoping to be able to send him there at discharge. Alas, they would not be open until late spring. NMT enrolled elsewhere for spring semester, did OK but by the end of summer clearly needed something else. So we went off to Fusion, where they met so warmly with him and us. I admit, I was skeptical, a bit, as was the boy's therapist. Could they really handle this kid? Deep breath. The NMT cautiously agreed to enroll. The first days were ROUGH. Really rough. He doesn't transition well, and he was anxious and terrified and angry. I was waiting for the "I'm sorry, we can't help him" call. Except...they handled him, well, beautifully. Better than the award winning nationally recognized public school or the two independent schools who work with anxious teens. They just...got him. Gave him space but kept him engaged. Slowly, he started to trust, first one teacher, then others. He started to think it wasn't so awful. Then, that it was OK. Now, 10 months later, he voluntarily enrolled in summer programming so he could avoid re-entry stress and keep moving and because he loves his time there. Recently he was angry with me over something teenager-y. He shouted "You know what? I'M GOING TO SCHOOL AND I'M NOT COMING BACK." I had to turn my back to keep from showing him the little happy dance I did with my arms. This is a kid who hated school. The bright, above average testing boy who was anxious and angry and felt he was stupid and it was a waste of time. I can't say that they could teach any kid, or that every parent will have the experience that we have. There are a lot of factors that go into his success, one of which was him making different choices, his clinical team making some medication changes that helped him, and a measure of emotional maturity kicking in, or just being weary of being in trouble all the time. I can say that Fusion's team were a significant part of that though, meeting him where he was, building the relationship first, building trust, and yes, holding him to standards and teaching too. Yeah, they really get it, how to reach the anxious school refusing kid, and they are doing great work with him. I could not be more grateful.

They are extremely safe regarding COVID at all grade levels and separate everyone into cohorts, so whenever there is exposure, we don't need to shut down the entire school. This entire school year, we have not yet had to stay at home due to COVID, which wasn't the case at the last school we enrolled our son in. As for his learning, his language has really exploded while being enrolled in the school. He has even started playing with other children so well and being interested in their activities, which I attribute to the great socialization at Buckley. My son loves going to school every morning. His teachers, Miss Susan and Miss April, are so wonderful and provide great updates on his progress as well as his classmates. The Buckley community as a whole is very welcoming and inclusive. Children deserve an educational environment where their academic progress, emotional well-being, social development, confidence, and sense of belonging are protected above all else. My child attended East Woods from nursery, and my greatest concern has always been the impact on my child. In my experience, my child did not receive the level of support needed to truly thrive academically, socially, or emotionally. Important learning needs were not identified or addressed in a timely manner, and seeing my child struggle academically, including entering first grade without the reading foundation expected for that level, was heartbreaking. A child's education is about much more than tuition, enrollment, or attendance. It is about recognizing each child's individual needs, supporting their growth, building confidence, encouraging friendships, and ensuring that they feel valued and supported. During a difficult family situation, I believe my child's educational experience was negatively affected by decisions surrounding parental involvement. I was excluded from aspects of my child's school experience, and my understanding was that this occurred because the other parent, who was responsible for tuition payments, would not continue with the school unless I was excluded. Regardless of the circumstances between adults, the child should always be the priority. A school's responsibility is to protect the child's academic progress, emotional well-being, social development, and relationship with supportive parents whenever possible. My concern is that children from families experiencing divorce or separation deserve the same level of care, neutrality, and advocacy as every other child. No child should lose opportunities for support, connection, or a sense of belonging because of adult disagreements. Parents place enormous trust in school leadership. They deserve transparency, fairness, and a commitment to putting children first. Families should feel confident that concerns are heard, learning differences are recognized, and decisions are made based on what is truly best for the child. I encourage parents to ask questions about how a school handles learning needs, parental involvement, and difficult family situations. If other families have experienced concerns regarding communication, educational support, or their child's school experience, I encourage you to document your experiences and seek appropriate guidance. No child should lose opportunities to learn, grow, feel supported, and thrive because of circumstances beyond their control. The child must always come first.
