I always have to make a stop here when I visit Edmonton. We stopped in randomly a few years back and I found a unicorn dress that is the ultimate conversation piece. This stop I walked out with an incredible cat sweatshirt and long sleeve dress that looks like an adult version of my catholic uniform in grade school. Mars & Venus is a really neat store! Not only does it carry a great selection of apparel but it also has a lot of shoes, gift items, accessories, geeky items, and more! Where else can you find bizarre flavours of gum, neat lunchboxes, unusual jewelry, and themed bandages? I keep wanting to buy a dress there but have yet to do so... someday! They have lots of punk rock, goth, geek, and vintage apparel and items. If only the incense section wasn't so potent -- otherwise I'd spend a lot more time in this store! Sometimes it is hard to find what I'm looking for simply because they have so much stuff! In any case, this is a Whyte Avenue institution of sorts when it comes to unusual and fun clothing and other merchandise. It's always fun to browse even if I don't buy anything on a particular visit. Looking for a place in Edmonton you can get a skull necklace, band shirts, rock a billy dresses and rainbow high heels? You found it. Immediately as you walk in you are struck by the sheer volume of jewelry and as you walk towards the back of the store they have really rammed as many clothing items in as possible. It's fab to have a massive collection but hard to shop unless you love to rummage. The shoe section is always fun and I can't wait for summer to get back in there for a pair of rainbow heels I spotted. If you didn't walk out the door with a bag of cool shit, I bet you (and even the most conservative dresser) had fun looking around. read more

If you've ever wanted your own "Jesus" action figure, then Mars & Venus is the place to go! This store has some really wacky merchandise, but it's really what keeps me coming back. They have some of the coolest, funkiest sunglasses I have ever seen. I was once trying some on, and then this worker said to me, "You have to try these." He pulled these crazy over sized, hot-pink rimmed sunglasses from out of the glass case. They were super weird, but awesome too. I've seen some very cool collectible merchandise here like a KISS statuette that was selling for $160. The clothes are a mixture of goth, punk, and rockabilly. Some of the dresses and t-shirts are amazing, but the women's sizes usually run small. I also like that they have a large assortment of plastic, glass, and stone rings, since I am allergic to metal. I once got a very glittery plastic ring that I still wear and love. This store can be kind of expensive, so I don't buy much here, but they do have awesome boxing day sales. If you're not there right at opening time, most of the good stuff is gone, and you will definitely miss out. read more

This is a great punk rock vintage store. This place is filled with everything from incense to belt buckles, to buttons, clothing, sunglasses, and crazy "junk." I used to go in this store a lot more, and it really is not my style. It is a fun place to browse though. I would recommend this place for any punk rock lovers! Mars and Venus isn't my typical store, as it has a punk and goth vibe to it, and I'm more of a preppy girl. But it's still lots of fun to poke around, and see all they have here. The hand-drawn lunchboxes caught my eye; they had cool designs on them that looked like tatoos, and were $25 each. I was amazed at how many belt buckles they had! Just when you think you saw them all, they have another case of them. My favorites were the wallets and -- this is the coolest part -- the Nacho Libre masks! If you saw the movie starring Jack Black, you'll know what I'm talking about. It'd be cool to dress up as Nacho Libre for Halloween, wouldn't it? ("You crazy!") They have an entire section full of incense and worship figurines, a lot of huge platform shoes and music patches, and a colorful display of feather boas. I liked some of the dresses they had because they were really different from what you normally see at the mall. Lots of red and black. They also have a guys' section, but it's smaller than the girls' stuff. read more

This is a crazy cool store located along Whyte Ave. I would say their stuff is mostly for women, since they have a larger selection of clothes, but they also have some items for men. They have a large selection of cool and unique belt buckles and wrist cuffs. They have a whole bunch of stuff and it makes exploring the store all that more fun and exciting. They have hats for men and women; they have bags, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and clothes. Some of their clothes have that 60's look to them. They have some really cool black dresses and some sexy looking tops. They also have some comfortable looking plaid shirts if corsets aren't your thing. The two girls were pretty nice; they asked me if I needed any help and let me look around all I wanted. They were pretty cool and friendly. I'm not sure what kind of specific style their clothes would fit into but I guess that means you need to come down there and see for yourself. I could see myself wearing the plaid shirts with jeans; I'm not really a dress or corset type of girl. I do wish I had that kind of confidence where I could feel comfortable wearing something like that. If you like unique items then I'm sure you could find something unique that fits who you are. read more

I really enjoy this store and what they have to offer. They have a large selection of pins, belts, socks, rock clothing, purses, etc. The only part of the store I did not like, are the employees. My friend and I were constantly bombarded by them either chiming into our conversations, or standing over us as we browsed. I like this store alot actually, the staff are great and they have lots of nice clothes. My only complaint is that being a plus size girl I've never been able to buy any clothes from here. It seems like all their brands fit poorly through the shoulders and hips. I know it's just the brands they carry but I would still love to be able to really clothing shop in this store. But if you are new in town, totally go to Mars and Venus - this is your to-go awesome boutique made just for you little punk rock boys and girls! Seriously, go check them out. I have had mad love for them for 15 years. I remember coming to their legendary Boxing Day sales with my bro and cousins every year during high schools and universities. Some of my most iconic and favorite outfits are from here - I even think my sister-in-law's shoe's she wore on her wedding day came from Mars and Venus. The staff are so helpful and down to earth people you feel as though you could stay and chat all day ! I most recently bought a "pin up girl " dress for a themed bday party. I can't say that I'd build my wardrobe out of this place, but certainly the hipsters on Whyte Ave have been in here once or twice. I drop in to pick up some casual Dickies stuff (a remnant of my much more punky youth) every once in a while. For guys, that's pretty much the look, Dickies and bowling shirts, more dark skater than goth along with all the equivalent short skirts and baby-doll tees with jaded slogans for the gals. The prevalent colour for any season is black, with some midnight blue thrown in. Beyond the clothes, they have a selection of accessories (bags, buckles, faux jewellery) and toys (think ugly dolls and psycho teddy bears) that always catches my eye if not my wallet's attention. All and all, I'm a fan. It is after the quintessential Whyte Ave shop for the quintessential Whyte Ave look (face it, it's the suburbanites and tourists that walk the avenue in cargo shorts and sports jerseys). read more

Rockabilly, gothic, pinup, punk, they probably have something for you. They have a pretty decent selection, the store is packed. Shoes, accessories and home decor are also amongst the many shelves. There is always something new and different to explore. Mars and Venus is also a supporter of the local arts. If you talk to him nicely, his is usually more than willing to put out handbills or put up a poster of your event. Mike loves to support local. Shop local. You can't find this level of service at the mall! The Mars & Venus team made my Xmas shopping. My man had come in shopping for me (everything he bought I loved of course) and mentioned he really liked a shirt they had. I went in a few weeks later and Jo showed me the shirt, which she had put on hold on the off chance I would come in shopping. She went out of her way to do something considerate and make me look like a Xmas wizard. I was blown away that she would take sellable product off the shelf, to make sure he got what he wanted from "Santa". The atmosphere of this Whyte Avenue shop totally draws me in. The blaring music lends itself to this gothic-hipter-alternative themed store that sells a variety of vintage and contemporary fashions, belt buckles galore, jewelry, and other accessories. Even though it is obvious from my appearance that I am not a goth or punk kind of person, the staff is always very friendly and helpful. I have purchased a few bead necklaces from here, and even a really cool piece made from a bicycle chain. The perfect accessory for a cycling enthusiast. Buttons, wallets, charms, t-shirts -- the place is packed with all kinds of clothes and novelties. I sometimes feel like I am stepping into an art gallery rather than a clothing store. read more

There are some super cool finds to be had in this place... If you can find them. They have so much stock it's difficult to see what you are flicking through on their racks and it becomes more of a chore than a shopping excursion. I guess that's both a good and bad thing? Don't go in with a large bag because you WILL knock something over as you squish through the isles. That being said their prices are pretty fair for what they stock and where they are on the ave. parking as always on whyte is non existent so plan accordingly. read more

I love this store, they are on par with the others that sell the same sort of stuff. But they don't skimp out on the quality as I have seen some of the other stores do as of late, which is sad. But I adore their staff, I've never had issues there. And have gotten stuff from there that I couldn't find anywhere in the city, not to mention their layaway plan beats all the others. I have been shopping at Mars & Venus for what seems like forever. They offer a variety of alternative clothing, accessories, and paraphernalia such as toys and kitchen items in the goth, punk, rockabilly, metal, etc genres (I'm sure I'm missing some). The prices are about on par with other alternative stores in the city, though as mentioned in other reviews, they tend to stock higher quality items. The staff here are always helpful and friendly, and won't hesitate to run around the store and find things for you. The store is packed with cool things and it's well-organized and clean. I love this store both for finding unique items for myself and for finding that perfect gift for someone else. Awesome! read more

Mars and Venus has been a favourite store of mine on Whyte since probably it opened back when I was in high school. I don't shop there as often these days, but it still remains a favourite place of mine to browse through whenever I'm in the area. They have an awesome collection of interesting items, accessories and clothing for guys and girls. The staff are generally very friendly when you approach them, but let you wander around in peace which I really appreciate. I do like how often they change the merchandise so every time I stop in, there are new things to look through. My one issue is they have limited sizes of clothing and they seem to always fit on the smaller side. But I've found a lot of fun and unique things here. read more

This place is so chock full of eye candy goodness, it commands the awe of a well curated rockabilly culture museum, but it's better 'cause everything's for sale. If I grew up in Edmonton, I'd have lived here as a teen... these days, I find things I'm comfortable wearing, but mostly, it's probably my safest bet when shopping for my 13 year old... and really the only place where I could find a dress she'd be willing to wear. I think their prices are all over the place, I suppose they're at the mercy of their suppliers. Same deal with sizing here. I tried on 4 dresses by different brands yesterday. One medium that was way too big, another medium that was a little snug but wearable, a large that fit like a glove... and the dress I ended up buying was a little snug, but sexy as all heck, was... an XXL!!! Through most brands' modern sizing, I'm a pretty consistent 6/8, or medium. Which means I can sometimes sneak into a kids' XL (I have a Hello Kitty weakness, ok?). There was no way this was a kids' dress (it's quite bust flattering). I'd love to see what their version of an XS is. I'm not insulted, though I think everyone should be, I'm just utterly bemused. I think that they should, as a reasonable service, have an in-house harmonized sizing system that could be added to their price labels, if the sizing from the brands that they carry varies so much. It would make dress shopping much easier. Staff is super helpful, which I find impressive, similar shops in Montreal have always been plagued with super snobby staff which always made me apprehensive to go in... never felt that kind of vibe here. read more

I really love the stuff they sell here because it is unique - it's usually some super cute dress or T-shirt that catches my attention from the window display and coaxes me into this store. But once I am in, I usually have a difficult time finding price tags on the things I like the most (some things are priced, but I just seem to have bad luck maybe). Unfortunately, this usually leads to me putting the item down and saying maybe next time....you know we all love those awkward moments when you ask an associate how much something you are clearly interested in is, and then get that tail between your legs feeling of slight embarrassment when it's way out of your price range. I am the type of person who cannot pass up a good deal - so if the price is right, or something I have been watching is on sale, I am all over it. It would be really nice to be able to easily look at the price of something so I can decide how much I really like it. Out of the ordinary is how I would describe the clothes, toys, accessories, and various nick knacks that can be found here. Have shopped at Mars and Venus before. Was doing a scavenger hunt around Whyte Ave with our workplace & popped into Mars & Venus to ask for help. Staff was extremely rude to us and would not let us take a picture of a bracelet for our hunt. Every other place on Whyte was wonderful & friendly. I will never shop at Mars and Venus again, and will tell friends to boycott it, b/c of the extra-ordinarily rude behavior of this one staff member. I think that even if people are going into your store, without the intention to buy, you should treat them as respectful future customers, not with disdain. read more

This is a great stop to make if you're shopping down Whyte ave. I love coming here especially if I need to find a dress for a wedding. They have a great mix of styles and I usually find their prices fantastic. I was in last night and wound up buying two dresses and two pairs of heels for $375 (damn you wedding season!). Maybe not everyone thinks that's a great deal, but I definitely do. Especially to find something a little bit edgy that you likely won't see anyone else wearing. I had two salespeople helping me yesterday and both were fantastic. They were really patient with me while I tried on many, many dresses haha and were so kind as to help me pick heels for my dresses. I like when salespeople don't make you feel like you're bothering them. My shopping companion is a plus size girl and she rarely ever wears dresses due to not being able to find anything in her size. Even she found an adorable floral dress that fit her perfectly. I was once again very impressed with my shopping experience here and I will definitely be back! read more

Love this place! The staff are always very welcoming. They are willing to help you find sizes, or even a cool dress/outfit if you tell them what your basically looking for. I'm pretty sure they even offer lay away too. Which helps out for those who are students and on a budget. They always have super cool little lunch boxes and goodies towards the front. The shoe/purse/wallet section is a good size. However I feel if you where a man, this store would be hard to shop in. It's mainly ladies stuff with a small section in the back corner for men's. The inscnets I feel are strong and at one point of my life I was unable to handle strong scents so I was unable to even walk into the store. This is for sure now one of my go to stores when I need a cool or vintage like dress. Lots of the times Rowena will Have something but not my size, so I walk a few blocks and see if mars and Venus has it. But they are more of a darker punk style mixed in with some vintage rockabilly. I feel almost anyone can walk in and find something. A cool outfit, action figure ( I think I saw a Jesus bobble head at one point) they have tons of hello kitty.
