I rode the train to the airport this morning and a one way ticket is $3.50 like the previous time I rode the train. There was some old lady making a nuisance of herself by the gates and the lone staff member on duty was trying to ignore her. As I passed through the gate the lady slipped through behind me and I said she should probably buy a ticket and she told me to mind my own damn business. I would have, if she didn't use me to skip paying for the train fare. I bet her plan was to follow someone else out at her stop because you need to use your ticket to enter and exit the stations. When we got on the train the lady was babbling to herself the entire time. I don't think she was all there in the head. At least this train didn't smell like pee. There was no ventilation so it was very stuffy despite the cooler temperatures of the early morning. read more

The Arts Center MARTA station is my "home" MARTA station, so I travel through several times per year. The center got its name because it's located directly behind the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown, which is home to the High Museum of Art, the Alliance Theatre, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, to name a few. This is also the station to use if you want to go to Colony Square, Piedmont Park, and Atlantic Station. Atlantic Station runs a free shuttle service from Arts Center station to Atlantic Station (http://www.yelp.com/biz/atlantic-station-shuttle-atlanta). The red and gold lines (north-to-south) run through Arts Center station, which makes it easy to hop on and go to Buckhead, downtown, or the airport without having to stop and switch trains. Arts Center station to the airport takes about 20-25 minutes. There are over 30 free parking spaces at this station, but they are usually taken. There are two main entrances to the station. One is on West Peachtree St. (lower level) and the other is on Arts Center Way (upper level). If you want to go to the MARTA bus bays, the Atlantic Station pick-up point, the Woodruff Arts Center, or Piedmont Park, go to the upper level. If you accidentally exit via the West Peachtree entrance, you'll have to walk around the block to get to the right place. Arts Center station is on par with other MARTA stations in terms of cleanliness and functionality. On average, it's one of the smaller and less busy stations. Signage is usually pretty clear, so navigating the station is easy. Trains come about every 15 minutes on weekdays and about every 20 minutes on weekends. Probably one of the more touristy-heavy stations on the MARTA, this one has decent signage to find the High Museum and the others nearby. It's on both the Red and the Gold lines. The African-American female driver of the 40 West End route bus #1570 at the Art Center station March 2 at 4:20pm was rude and unprofessional. I've rode MARTA for over 3 decades; never had such a horrible service person act like this. I walked up and she was playing a game on her phone. Knocked on window, she kept playing game. i spoke for directions and she snapped "WHAT?" I was shocked but asked for directions. She spat them out and kept with her game not even looking at me. Her directions were wrong. Missed my appointment. What's worse is I tried to report this MARTA's website and it would not go through. I may search this woman down and get her name and report her personally. Near all my other drivers & serve MARTA folks have been great. She's a disgrace to the company and profession. read more

The Marta train is fast and reliable, it goes underground and above ground allowing you to see beautiful Georgia for a cheap price. The trains run conveniantly from Early morning to late night. They have an app called moovit which tells you actual train times making it super easy for planning. I got a 4 day pass while staying in Atlanta that included the rail and busses for just $19.95. The train connects to the airport making it very conveniant for travelors to get around the city and more. The Marta station has it's own police department and is very safe at all times. I am from Miami and this rail is faster and way safer than the metrorail back home. The train can also be used for photographers to cheat and be able to take pictures and cover more ground effectively. read more

This is one of the cleaner stations however it can be a little creepy waiting on this platform. Elevators work efficiently and have not been used as bathrooms. This station is almost under the High Museum of Art and right off busy Peachtree Street. Catch Cobb County buses here as well. read more

It was an easily accessible train station. I took it from the airport to the High museum which is across the street. There are stairs it an escalator. I do not remember an elevator. I took off a star because outside of the station had some sketchy characters hanging around. My suggestion is to add some art to the station and post a police officer outside. read more

Let's start by saying Atlanta doesn't value public transportation. I've taken Marta several times and honestly every time it's been a struggle of some kind. From late trains to broken escalators to machines that won't accept cash or debit cards..it's always something. This last round it was actually all 3. I also saw a mom letting her baby crawl on the platform, but I won't hold that against Marta, it was so grody I had to get it out of my system. I really want to believe in public transportation but to get anywhere you have to allow almost an hour and even then sometimes you're late. All too often, it feels the same to me as sitting in traffic. I'm giving it 3 stars because at least they're trying. It's air conditioned, they have fans, good security and it's clean all things considered. Would it be my first choice to get around Atlanta? No. I'm lucky enough to live near a station and see it's value but would only take it to something like a sports event or other mega-packed situation when it would be a pain to take my car. read more

The MARTA was interesting and fairly easy to understand how to get around town. What's interesting is that MARTA generally charges by the number of trips you will make as opposed to DC's Metro which charges by destinations. The interior of the cars are similar to DC's Metro before they had some upgrades. So, that helped ease the use of public transportation in a new town. Plus, the posted map was easy to follow. My major complaint was that it was hot inside! Someone please turn on the a/c! I dread to think this is standard cooling temperature during the hot summer months. read more

I am here every day, twice a day. The biggest draw back is the lack of free parking. They have one lot with maybe 20 parking spots. If it's Monday through Friday, you're not getting a spot... Unless you are extremely lucky. The 37 bus starts here and runs all the way to Cumberland shopping center via Northside Dr. and DeFoors Ferry. The 110 Peach route also runs by here from Lenox to downtown. Additionally, there is an Atlantic Station shuttle (which arguably is walking distance) and a Gwinnett County transit bus. As far as the actual station goes, it's always been clean and easy to navigate. The lowest level is for trains, and then the second tier, buses, and finally the top is 16th Street. There is a down escalator on one side, and an up on the other. The elevator is located in the center of the exit (luckily, only one exit) and rides all the way up to 16th Street. I do wish there was better parking for those late mornings when I miss the bus but aside from that, I'd say this is a pretty quiet but convenient station. read more

MARTA is like the San Francisco BART and the Boston T had babies. It really is. I wish it made that crazy UFO-whirring noise like the BART, but hey, that's asking a lot. MARTA is clean, efficient, and your cell phone works in its tunnels because it's not as far underground as a "real" subway. Actually, I don't really know what MARTA is... it's kinda a mystery. But it got me where I needed to go (sort of - they really need to expand the lines northwest....), and only having been in Atlanta for about 48 hrs, I was never confused and I never got lost. Okay, I kinda got lost, but it wasn't MARTA's fault that I didn't know the difference between Five Points and Little Five Points... It's also kind of amazing that at every stop, MARTA robot-voice spits out every single possible landmark that you will find at that particular station. Impressive. The MARTA is quaint, clean, and efficient. It would be five stars if it was expanded to serve all areas of the city. Taking the CCT to the MARTA kinda sucked. But whatev. Some chick at a bar told me it was a county dispute. How adorably southern. :) read more

As a person who lives in a city with good public transportation, I appreciate traveling to a city with good public transportation. As congested as the Atlanta area highways get, I was grateful that there was a train that went directly from the airport to near my friend's home in Dunwoody. The train is clean, spacious and seems to stop at all the major attractions and universities. As a veteran of CTA in Chicago, I don't really worry about safety (I know how to handle myself!) but the train seemed pretty safe to me. If I lived in ATL, I know for sure I'd never be able to handle that horrendous traffic, so it's nice to see that there's an accessible rail system available. Too bad the folks who live there don't seem to use it! read more

Getting around Atlanta can be tough but the MARTA is the way to go. I purchased a 7 day Breeze card for $18. I was on the so many time my first day in Atlanta the card paid for itself. The only downfall is the 20 minute wait in between stops so plan accordingly. Found the iPhone app for the MARTA and that helps in planning your routes for the day. This transit system definitely beats taking a taxi. read more

The MARTA seems reliable from my short period of stay in Atlanta. I'm not sure how but apparently an 8 lane highway can get backed up pretty easily there, so this is a nice way to beat the traffic. The stations are clean, the routes are pretty easy to navigate compared to DC's metro system. There's a sign outside to let you know how much longer your train will be. On the particular day I was using it a bunch of trains were out of order resulting in a bit of a longer wait than usual, but I can't really blame them for that. They have free parking unless you park for more than a day also and the parking deck was huge at the North Point stop where I was. I think the prices could be lowered a bit to encourage more passengers. $4.50 for a round trip while a gallon of gas is $3.50? Though I suppose the cards for frequent commuters cuts that cost down a bit. I'd still use it as it's very convenient. read more

I generally like public transportation and feel most cities should have it. I have used it all over the world and found MARTA at the change station to be more confusing than countries where I don't speak the language. Then there are the computer issues. I had $2 on my card and added $5 for two trips. After the first trip, I tried to return and my card was denied. I checked the balance and it was 50¢. So $2 + $5 = $7 value. After one ride, I should have $4.50, but am now missing $4. With a system taking as much money as it wants, rides become very expensive. If I had $20-30 on it, i wouldn't have noticed the missing money. I suppose it's a way they pad their pockets. read more

I think that if MARTA had more funding and people in the suburbs got they're heads out of their asses it would have a more extensive system. Overall, MARTA is pretty great. read more

I've only been on the Yellow Line from the airport to Peachtree. So I don't feel right giving it the full 4-star rating. But I really liked their system. Small, but easy to navigate. Clean, mostly well-lit stations (though it can take a minute to figure out which way to go). Clear maps. Clear announcements about the upcoming stop. Clean trains. Nicely sized seats. And the system where you buy your card is pretty darned clear and easy to maneuver. read more

MARTA is a great service for the community. People clown MARTA and claim it's gully or ratchet, but those people obviously haven't ridden the L in Chicago or any of the trains in New York. Ride one of those and you'll long for the day when the worst part of your journey was a 17 year old blasting his headphones. If you don't like black youth, then yeah, MARTA probably isn't for you, but if you're NOT RACIST or NOT AGIST, then the MARTA is fine, perfectly fine. The new "ride with respect" program is nice too, because the typical rider is tired of nonsense too. When I see the elderly going in on a bum, you know the public wants a nice ride. read more

An indirect sort of review, also posted on the Atlanta airport page... I'd placed a reservation with Ace through a third party website. They were chosen simply because they provided the lowest price rental available from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport. After my flight finally arrived and I navigated my way from the furthest most terminal to the rental car center (the multi-story parking structure visible from the rental car center train, chock full with rental cars, was a sight to behold), I waited in a four deep line at the tiny Ace counter amidst nearly vacant larger counters of larger companies. When I finally reached the front of the line, I had all required documentation, identification, and payment cards immediately ready. The counter representative had no trouble finding my reservation in their computer system, but was quick to note in a rather ambivalent tone, "I've got nothing for you." Confused, I initiated a brief exchange about the nature of a reservation (I wish someone could have queued the Seinfeld episode), in response to which he cited fine print of what he called the "general terms and conditions" that he was nonetheless unable to actually produce. When I specifically asked to see the verbiage, all he could muster was "it's there." Later in the conversation, the desk representative identified himself as Mr. Campbell, adding "I own the company." Anyone who's traveled can undoubtedly identify with the frustration of these sort of logistical snafus--feces happen. To this point in the exchange at the rental counter, however, I viewed the situation as an inconvenience and risk of doing business with a relatively fly-by-night company. It was when I attempted to enage Mr. Campbell in finding alternate solutions to his lack of inventory of the singular product in which he was in business to provide that I became motivated to recount the experience in the hopes of saving others from a similar fate. After the second time Mr. Campbell reiterated "I've got nothing for you," adding a condescending "buddy" to the end of the statement, I recalled the massive structure filled with rental cars and asked if we could speak with another rental agency to secure a vehicle. His response was "yes, you can" adding again that he "had nothing for me." When I attempted to clarify that his position might offer additional leverage in being able to fulfill my reservation, he reiterated that I was on my own--coloring the comments with ample use of "buddy." The positive side of the story is that I ended up using Atlanta's MARTA public transportation system during my weekend trip--saving almost 90% compared with the cheapest rental car option I'd been quoted. The trains especially were quick, easy, and comfortable. MARTA employees and fellow passengers were extremely helpful. I'd highly recommend this transportation alternative to anyone travelling from the airport to downtown or midtown Atlanta. It might be worth noting that all my travel occurred during daylight hours. I have no doubt the car I'd reserved was rented to another party willing to pay a higher price (perhaps even the party directly in front of me in line). Undoubtedly, this made Ace additional money in the short term--perhaps that's a wise business practice. Only time will tell how it will impact them on a more sustained basis, however. I do know they've lost one future customer. read more

Marta's cool but if you're a tourist and looking to sneak away to Magic City, make sure you exit on they greyhound side of the station. I exited on the opposite side at about 11pm (Garnett Station) and thought I had walked into an 80's dope fiend movie. I was completely alone and had to walk down a long desolate exit (about 100 yards) which was occupied by drug dealers and drug addicts actively doing crack. Walked around the station and swore I saw Bubbles from the Wire getting high with other homeless people just popping out of nowhere, got propostioned for weed by a 14 year old in fatigues before I got to the "safe side"...Magic City is only steps from the station if you exit on the appropriate side. Don't make the mistake I made. Plus, Magic City is completely overrated. read more
