DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!! If I could I would give them a zero star. Horrible customer service. As we arrived to the business to obtain a quote, we attempted to open the door. The door was locked, we were sure the business was open and clarified on Yelp. We then decided to call the business and the young lady answered the phone and she apologized for the inconvenience and stated she locks the door because she is by herself. As she opens the door and we step in, it reeked of Marijuana. That is when I really knew why she locks the door. She did then give us a quote but I felt I had no time to explain and felt rushed. Not sure if it was the second hand smoke but I was getting a headache. I don't know why we even decided to leave our box to get engraved there but for "some reason" we felt we could trust them with the project. It took a couple days to get a final quote and sample of the project which was nothing what we had explained to her. Again we had explained how we wanted it to be done and she then stated she needed to talk to the guy who engraves and she needed to modify the quote. She stated also she was going to call us back by the end of the day to obtain a new quote. But that was a lie. Days later we called her and left her voice messages to get a status update on the layout, a week later she finally returned our calls. Long story short it took way too long to retrieve anything from them. And we felt they were not going to be successful with our project and on time with it. We were fed up and decided to pick up the box and take our business somewhere else. Again, as we picked up the box same incident happen; door was locked and the strong smell of marijuana. Fyi! I wish I read the previous review. We dropped off a trophy to be engraved. They said they would contact us within a week. Weeks later we haven't heard anything. They do not answer the door, phones, or emails. On our third visit we finally saw someone at the location. She reeked of marijuana and appeared drunk. She said she could not help us and that someone would call us. We just want the trophy back.... I have showed up in person, called, texted, and emailed with no success. Was Yelp! searching for a laser company close to where I live that could do what I needed, which initially was: 1 line of engraving on a piece of teak decking from the USS Iowa(BB-61). Ron told me that he could do it for about $45.00. The hard part of a project like this is not the doing per se.....it's the setup......the creation of proofs, the time to clamp the work on the machine, ensuring that it looks good and will make the customer happy.....have experience working in a machine shop.....trust me, while that fee sounds like a lot of money....it isn't. So.....in looking at the Yelp! photos, it occurred to me that having my Oscar Schmidt tenor ukulele that Momz got me for my b-day a few years back personalized on the head would be cool, and Ron was up to the task, so I got both done. It's pretty much a 1-man shop, and there are things that can go wrong, but the bottom line is that the engraving was perfect, the price was as agreed upon and it was delivered in the agreed upon amount of time. Would use Ron's service again in a heartbeat for any of the engraving projects that I might have....he's honest, he does top quality work, his price is very reasonable and he's a local small business. Ron did incredibly detailed work, creating a small, 1 1/2 in. x 1 1/2 laser cut-out of our family crest, which is incredibly detailed -- requiring three separate, veined leaves and three stems of blossoms. He asked what kind of wood my box would be, offered to make the crest in the same type of wood, then gave me a quote that was far lower than I had expected. When I went to pick it up, he almost apologetically told me that he had made two -- one was lightly glued down on a piece of metal to show how all the tiny pieces would fit together, another was a small baggie containing a full set of the same pieces. Thank goodness he gave me two sets, because I managed to misplace one piece! The crest he cut was, IMHO, the best part of the box. read more

Worst experience ever! I dropped off my daughter's urn on March 9 to get it engraved. Quote was high -- $220. Figured they would do a great job. They told me it would take 5-7 working days. They sent me a proof which I approved. They called a week later and said it was done. I called to make sure it would be ready to pick up when I arrived. I was told it was not. I was never contacted to let me know there were problems with the job. Apparently, they removed a good portion of paint from the urn when trying to engrave it and had to order a new one to replace it and start working on the new one. After waiting 3 weeks and even after being called and told it was ready again (and it wasn't), I returned to the shop (March 31). When my friend and I entered the shop at 11:30 a.m. that day, we could smell the distinct odor of marijuana. All of the employees were stoned! So unprofessional! Not to mention the substandard work, not being honest with me, unreasonable wait time, etc. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of the urn they screwed up. I went out to my car to think about it. After all, this was a piece I was going to have forever. I decided I didn't want them to even touch the new urn. I marched back in and demanded the new urn and proofs and announced I would be taking my business elsewhere. The owner, Ron, came out and tried to tell us why the job was messed up but I wasn't interested in hearing it and left. My advice: go to Engraving Pros in Grossmont Center in La Mesa. They do great work for one-fifth of the price! read more

I had an interesting project that I needed done and had no idea where to go. I was looking to have my Cigar Humidor custom engraved with the logo of the manufacturer. However, all I had with a old cigar box (no digital logos or designs) to go off of. I just googled custom engraving in San Diego and started calling around. I met Ron and he assured me it would be no problem. We walked through what I was hoping to get out of it and he gave me some great input. He said he would even rush it if needed but since there was no urgency on my end I said for him to take his time. Over the next 2 weeks he sent me proofs and updates to make sure we were on the same page. I picked it up today and all I can say is WOW. Absolutely perfect design. When he went over the final product with me he let me know how the engraving went so not to alter or damage the original lacquer finish and to go deep enough to make it visible but not to alter the integrity of the lid. It came out flawless, just what I was looking for. I highly recommend checking this place out for anything you want engraved. It's a small shop off of Mira mar road and may not seem like much, but the job is done right and the quality is there. Thank you! read more

Absolutely beautiful workmanship you will find NONE better in San Diego. My wife and I only dealt with Ron, one of the nicest people you will ever meet. We wanted to get a decanter and glasses engraved for our nephew who is being promoted to Captain in the Escondido Fire Department. Ron was able to perfectly copy the shoulder patch and engrave it on the decanter/glasses a truly unique gift. It would be very easy not to select Martian Laser Engraving. The first impression isn't quite frankly a good one. The shop isn't the most organized or clean place by a long shot. As mentioned by others emails/phone calls aren't returned in a timely fashion either. I'm sure they lose a lot of business for those reasons. If you made your decision not to use them for the above reasons you have made a terrible decision. Think of it this way, you are dealing with artists that are a bit on the eclectic side. So reach into your patience bag and grab a handful. You will get what you asked for at the price quoted. I am giving Martian Laser Engraving 5 Stars because there is none better in town. The end project exceeded all of my expectations and then some. These guys are talented, professional, take pride in their work, and have an eye for quality. I highly recommend using their services for your custom engraving needs. To give the unabridged version - I purchased a ukulele as a wedding gift. To add to its artistic/sentimental value, I wanted to have it engraved with the couple's name and wedding date so it could serve as a display piece as well as a musical instrument. After searching the internet for engraving in San Diego, I settled on Martian Laser as the website appeared the most professional out of the businesses I was able to locate. After a quick intro call, I brought the uke into the shop. Over the next few days I worked closely with Ron to customize the design via different proofs he sent. The end product speaks for itself. I was able to get the exact design that I wanted, in the exact location that I wanted, and using the exact font that I wanted. Even though my project was small, Martian Engraving still provided high quality results and customer service. Horrible!!! ...where to start. The day I ordered, the shop smelled like an ashtray - of the illegal kind. I was told that I would receive an email in approximately two hours. When I asked the price, they asked if I was paying cash or card. Sooo....cash gets a lower charge because they probably don't report it on their taxes. Two weeks later, I came back because I got no email. "Sorry, we've been busy, but I didn't forget about you." HOW ABOUT A PHONE CALL??? Two days later, I got the email. I approved the work, after one change was needed, and a week or so later I was called and informed that it was ready. I'd love to tell you about their great work, but I can't! Every time I come here no one is around. They don't answer their phone. It's 8:26 - and although Yelp says they open at 8:00 - here they are, still not open. Maybe Yelp times are wrong, but I wouldn't know - because store hours aren't even posted on their door/window. I look inside and it is a straight dump! Food and trash piled up! I requested engravings for two Marines with outstanding accomplishments, and they are about to leave and the engravings ordered over a month ago are finally ready...but no one is around to give them to me.
