I had an eye exam and bought prescription frames. The prescription frame selection I wish was a larger collection and more designers. Did have Betsy Johnson and Kate Spade frames and others. The technician was great! Very authentic and knowledgeable. During my visit with Dr, I felt like he explained everything well and made sure he address any questions or concerns I had. I have been a patient of Dr. Keith Taylor for years. Unfortunately, he has left this practice, and I went to see Dr. Vang. The new technician was very nice; she did a whole bunch of tests, photos, took pressure in my eyes, etc. Then Dr. Vang comes in, and he is also very nice and thorough. He dilates and examined my eyes. After the appointment, I was checking out, when another front desk person (NOBODY at the clinic wears name tags) told me that my balance is $39.62. When I asked him why I am being charged for a "free annual eye exam", he said that "we took a photo of your eyes so you don't have to be dilated". I said that I WAS dilated by 2 sets of eye drops. That person, Brad (I had to ask for his name as he was VERY rude and frustrated, for some reason), throws the papers, goes back to speak with the doctor, and comes back, saying that "he needed to do both photos and dilation". When I asked for a reason for that, he said that he does not know, he will check, and that he is not going "to fight with you". Then he reverses the charges because of their mistake, and, without any apologies, hands the papers back to me. NO EXPLANATIONS, NO APOLOGIES, NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. I would have given this place a 1 star, but because of the rest of the staff that were nice, I am giving a 3/5. I am not going to that place again: Brad, don't be a Brat; even if you have a bad day, do not take it out on patients. Maybe, this job is stressful for him. read more

I was visiting from Oklahoma, when one of my lenses fell out of my glasses. I found an Martin Eyecare online, and, as it was near my hotel. I went there. I was extremely impressed by the quality of the service and the friendliness of the doctor, who fixed my glasses. He did a superb job and refused to take any payment. Dr Martin and his staff are amazing. I have seen him a few times now and am always impressed with his knowledge, concern, and desire to know his patients. I have had a "stink eye" as he calls it, since childhood. Dr. Martin carefully keeps track of that with each visit and has assured me many times that "all is well." He will not try to sell you anything that is not needed, telling me this last visit that with my minimal change in vision I could "spend a ton of money and get about a nickel's worth of improvement. His staff has been very helpful with my wife and I in selecting new frames when needed (I have the same ones that I bought two visits ago). When I DO buy them, I get remarkable assistance in finding the right ones. Kudos to Dr Martin and his staff. We are clients for life! read more

The doctor was great, the exam was pretty good, but the facilities were a little lacking. Positive: Dr. Martin was very friendly, and really enthusiastically explained details of what he was doing, and differences from my previous optometrist's approach. (I'd been going to the previous guy for 20 years, so I'm pretty used to one thing!) The price was great, one of the best around at ~$130 without vision insurance. Although he does sell glasses, there was no pressure in that, and he was totally honest that I was fine to continue with my old prescription. I also appreciated that he does the "air puff" pressure test, which is less invasive than the manual device my previous doctor used. Negative: the facility was not quite as clean as I would have liked, and the equipment used initially (by the technician) was visibly dirty, which made me a little uncomfortable. The exam rooms also have full-bore fluorescent lighting, which can be pretty harsh when your eyes are dilated. No bike rack out front, which was inconvenient, although there's lots of free car parking. Bus nearby, but it's a little awkward to get to. Neutral: Dr. Martin didn't dilate and look at the optic nerve without my request to do so. Again, I've only gone to one other doctor, but that doctor always did that part of the exam without question. Martin also doesn't dilate before getting the prescription, which is a major difference for farsighted folks like me (since they can focus part of the way). He had a principled reason for this approach, but it was different from what I was used to. All in all, I'd probably go again, although it would be great if some details of the experience were improved. read more

I've always enjoyed visiting Dr. Martin and staff for my annual eye exam. He mixes a sense of humor, extensive experience in other areas of medicine (he was a PA before he went to school to become an optometrist) and the desire to get me as the patient the best results for the most reasonable price. When I've needed to be seen for something aside from an annual eye exam his team gets me in promptly and the doctor puts a lot of care into his diagnosis as well as a good explanation of it. read more

After being referred to this clinic by a friend I could not be more disappointed in the service I received. The male technician that works at the desk has been rude to me with each and every encounter I have had. The female technician who performed my screenings prior to being examined by the doctor did not seem confident in a single task she performed and remained silent during our encounter. Without hearing my optical history it was as though the doctor decided I do not have a vision problem (I have worn glasses for 20 years). He blew through the exam and seemed to be frustrated if and when I couldn't discern whether "1 or 2" was a more clear option. I was told by the doctor that I should only be getting plastic frames, NO METAL, as the prescription was not going to make a significant difference. I'm not sure about you, but I don't care for being told how to spend my money on glasses that I wear each and every day - especially when I have not asked for the opinion. The doctor asked me about my insurance coverage. I had provided my medical insurance when scheduling the appointment, when arriving at the clinic, and when the doctor asked. I also have supplemental eye, I did not provide information to the desk about this coverage. The doctor said they'd see what the supplement covered. I told him no, and that I would be sending the appointment through my medical. Come to find out after leaving the clinic and not purchasing glasses there (as I do not wish to give this establishment any more of my time or money), that my supplement was billed regardless! OUTRAGEOUS. I sought a second opinion and received a prescription that was significantly different than what Dr. Martin provided and more similar to the glasses I have been wearing for 20 years. I have worked in healthcare for a decade and could not be more baffled or disappointed in the experience I had here. Dr. Martin was well reviewed online and by the friend who referred me. I did not expect the poor experience I received and would not recommend this clinic to anyone. read more

Have been seeing Dr Martin for 15 years. I had a complex and rare eye condition diagnosed in Chicago and have had all my care with him after relocating. Eyes are good, his approach is careful and common sense re prescription changes (no change in 3 years). All this while listening to my symptoms in the context of what is important to my vision goals. I've been seeing Dr. Martin for at least 25 years and I hope he will always be there for my eye exams. I don't understand some of the negative reviews below because they are not my experience. I have purchased single vision as well as progressive bifocals, clear and transition lenses, single vision and bifocal contact lenses and currently wear a single contact lens for mono vision to avoid needing reading glasses. I feel that the eye exams are always very thorough and I come away feeling that I see better each visit. He is very good about discussing the pros and cons of more expensive options. Last visit he gave me two sets of contacts to try out before deciding what to buy: an expensive high tech bifocal lens versus an inexpensive lens that I had been using with an updated prescription. I tried them out for a few days and made my decision. I always feel confident that I've left no stone unturned after leaving the office. Dr. Martin makes some wise comparisons like others have noted, e.g. you can spend a lot of money for a nickel's worth of improvement. Dr. Martin is conversant, wise and fun to visit. I find his friendly demeanor welcoming and confidence building. He's the only one I trust with my Eyecare. read more

A reviewer below mentioned this practice charing a la carte and I completely agree. I went in for a routine yearly eye exam (covered 100% by my insurance) and was later sent a $20 bill. When I called to inquire about the charge, the man who answered was extremely rude and condecending. Finally, with the help from my insurance (go figure), I found that I was charged for asking a smiple question about my eyes being itchy. Apparently, the doctor telling me they are itchy due to allergies is a "medical diagnoses" resulting in a $20 co-pay charge. The original charge was over $200, but my insurance covered the majority of it. At the very least they could have said I can take a look and answer, but you will be charged for it. This was just a slimy move to get more money. There is nothing you can do about it either, you are at the doctor's coding mercy. The only power I have is to warn others about this truly awful place. Lastly, the exam itself was not extensive. There was no dialiation and I felt extremely rushed. The facility is not very clean and has a musty/mold odor. I too was fooled by the great yelp reviews, please do yourself a favor and save some money by going elsewhere. read more

My favorite eye doctor ever. He does glasses (of course), contacts (including monoculars for those of us who don't want to deal with reading glasses), and very diligent eye health checks. Gave my 9 year old an eye exam. Pediatrician said my son had 20/35 vision from a basic pediatrician eye exam at a well check up recently. I just started going Dr Martin this year because he was participating in the network and carried the brand of glasses I like. He and the staff run a great office setting. I enjoy his personality . He was very competent in identifying and educating potential risks I had. Well as things happen, I just had event where a blood vessel ruptured behind my eye. I was able to get appointment immediately and Dr Martin was very thorough in the exam. I appreciated his empathy in the office and a phone follow up to alleviate my anxiety. He assisted in arranging the appointment to specialist where I am being treated by another competent office of eye professionals. I am grateful I happened upon Dr Martin :) read more

This was our first visit to Martin Eyecare. My insurance recently changed. We were forced to switch providers. After some research, we chose Martin Eyecare. The Dr himself wasn't so bad. The woman at the front desk was rude and condescending. We had to pay an additional $70 to 'talk' about contact lenses. When we asked about the charge, the woman said 'ha, contact your human resources dept.' In reality what this clinic appears to be doing, because the insurance company only pays a certain amount for an exam, they are charging al a carte. Never have we had to pay extra to talk about our choices. Additionally, this same woman kept pushing to purchase glasses. Their frames were priced very high. I assumed, because of the high pressure selling, she most likely received commission. My daughter works in a profession that she can't wear glasses. Never did they ask what would be best for her. Never did they disclose that there would be an additional fee to 'discuss' contact lenses. Just for the record, 'lady at the desk,' I have a CONTRACT, so 'contacting human resources' isn't an option. I am a leader amongst my coworkers. On numerous occasions I am asked about 'where to go?' I am unable to refer Martin Eyecare. Lady-at-the-desk, I suggest you work on being empathetic. read more

I have been dealing with eye exams for almost 20 years. As an adult I have not had vision insurance offered by my employers up until recently. So I have gotten my exams/glasses/contacts through Walmart Vision (found to be the most economical) for about 8 years. When I finally landed a job that offered vision, I jumped at the idea of trying a different eye clinic. Found Martin Eyecare online and made an appointment. That appointment was/is seriously the worst experience I have ever had with a clinic. The doctor did not manually check my eyes or ask me any questions. I had been having continuous issues with only my right eye due to what I assumed to be allergies so I wanted to have it more thoroughly examined to make sure it was just allergies, but my concerns were ignored and told that I 'probably needed a new brand of contacts'. My entire exam consisted of me removing my contacts and then being 'examined' by the machine that does an air puff in your eye and tells the doctor what my prescription is. What a waste! I needed new glasses so I hesitantly decided to order them. While my eyes are very near sided and I have allergies to pollen, I do not have any other complications with my eyes so the lenses are pretty basic - featherweight and anti glare. Once ordered I was told that they would be in in 7-10 days. Totally cool by me. When day 10 passed, I called for a status... didn't get a call back. Day 14 came and went, I called again and was told that they would be in 'soon'. A couple days later they finally arrived and I was not notified by the clinic, I only found out that they were in because I called again to check the status. Totally lame and disappointing experience. While I have vision care to cover the exam and a portion of my glasses and contacts, I still paid out of pocket a good chunk of change and was excited to get a new pair of glasses for the first time in a couple years. This appointment was 2 years ago and I still wince when I drive by their office on Parklawn in Edina during my work day. I have since returned to Walmart Vision- they have been much more attentive, thorough, respectful and appreciative of my business. read more

This is the WORST optometrist I've ever been to. Everything seemed fine at first, then during the exam I was told my prescription - it was off than what it originally used to be (one eye got better, one eye stayed the same). I questioned it during the exam and Dr. Martin kept saying "No, it's what I just told you." So fine, he's the expert. After order new lenses for my glasses and paying $50 for a "fitting fee," I left the office. They gave me new contacts with the prescription Dr. Martin gave me, I still couldn't see quite clear out of them - but they assured me it was fine. After wearing them a full day and still not being able to see clearly, I stopped by and asked for a refund due to the prescription being incorrect. They gave me the refund for the lenses, but not for the fitting fee. I asked why I had pay $50 for a fitting fee and they kept saying it was non-refundable. So I then asked the question, "I have to pay even though the doctor gave me the wrong prescription?" And they said...."Yes." I went back to my previous provider and they gave me new prescription, which was quite different than what Dr. Martin gave me, but I could finally see! I went back again and asked for my $50 back, this time with proof that Dr. Martin had given me the wrong prescription, and the receptionist said I had to talk to Dr. Martin to get it back.
